If a live sports stream keeps buffering, freezing, or turning blurry, first check whether the problem affects one event, one app, or every stream on your device. A fast speed-test result alone does not rule out weak Wi-Fi or congestion at the viewing device. Compare apps and devices, then test connection and playback settings before restarting equipment or contacting the streaming service.
First, identify how widespread the problem is
Note what you see: a spinning wheel, repeated freezes, a picture that drops in quality, or audio continuing while video stalls. Also record the service or event, device, app or browser, and approximate time. These details help distinguish a local problem from one limited to a service or stream.
- One event or channel: If other content in the same service plays normally, the issue may be limited to that stream. The symptoms alone cannot confirm a provider-side problem.
- One app, but other apps work: Focus first on that app or service.
- Several apps or devices have trouble: A shared network condition, such as Wi-Fi signal or congestion, becomes more plausible.
Compare apps and devices
- On the device showing the problem, try playing video in another app.
- If possible, open the same sports service on a second device using the same home connection.
- Compare the results: trouble limited to one app points toward that service or app; trouble across apps or devices points toward conditions they share, such as the network.
ESPN and YouTube TV both recommend checking other apps or devices as part of troubleshooting. Their guidance is available in ESPN’s playback and streaming troubleshooting guide and YouTube TV’s troubleshooting guide.
Check the connection where you watch
A speed test can help, but it does not prove the connection is stable at the streaming device. ESPN lists router distance, connected devices, and ISP outages or network issues among possible quality factors. YouTube TV also identifies network congestion and Wi-Fi interference as possible causes of live-programming trouble.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Check whether the device is far from the router or separated by walls or other obstructions. If practical, move it closer and retest.
- Consider whether other devices are using the connection heavily. Pause unnecessary downloads or demanding apps and see whether playback changes.
- Check with your ISP if you suspect an outage or network problem; do not assume one based on buffering alone.
- If the device and router support it and Wi-Fi instability seems likely, try a wired Ethernet connection. NFL support suggests switching from Wi-Fi to wired in a connection-speed troubleshooting case. A cable can test the Wi-Fi link, but it cannot fix an ISP outage or a problem with the service’s feed.
Use speed figures only for the service they describe
Streaming providers publish different targets for different resolutions and conditions. These are their own recommendations, not universal thresholds or guarantees of uninterrupted playback.
| Service and source | Published connection guidance | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| ESPN Select or Unlimited; page updated August 20, 2025 | At least 5 Mbps for HD; 25 Mbps for 4K UHD | ESPN’s recommendations for those tiers and resolutions. ESPN speed recommendations |
| YouTube TV Help; page does not state a year | 3 Mbps for SD; 7 Mbps for one HD stream; 13 Mbps for reliable HD with other devices using the network; 25 Mbps or more for available 4K programs | Service-specific guidance; 4K applies to programs available to 4K Plus subscribers. YouTube TV troubleshooting guide |
| NFL+ Support; year not stated | 5 Mbps or higher for the highest available quality | NFL+ guidance only; do not apply it to other sports services. NFL+ video quality support |
Actual playback can still vary with Wi-Fi conditions, active devices, device and app support, and service or network conditions. Meeting a published target does not by itself establish that the connection is stable end to end.

Reduce playback demand and close competing apps
Try a lower video quality
If the service offers a playback-quality setting, select a lower quality and retest. YouTube TV recommends lowering playback quality when troubleshooting connection problems. A softer picture may be a worthwhile trade-off if it prevents repeated stalls during a live game; improvement is a useful test, not proof of the underlying cause.
Close other apps or tabs
Close other running apps on the streaming device, or demanding browser tabs if you are watching in a browser. Then relaunch the stream. This follows ESPN and YouTube TV troubleshooting guidance and makes it easier to tell whether other activity was contributing.

Restart and update in a controlled order
- Relaunch the streaming app or refresh the browser, then test the same stream.
- Check for available updates to the streaming app and device system; install them if needed and test again.
- Restart the streaming device and retest.
- If the problem continues, restart the router and test once it is back online.
Change one thing at a time and retest after each step. That makes it clearer which change, if any, helped. ESPN’s guidance on poor quality, freezing, or stalling and YouTube TV’s troubleshooting steps include several of these actions.
