For a work or school Microsoft 365 account, go to myaccount.microsoft.com, sign in with the account you want to update, select the edit icon on your current profile picture, upload a replacement, resize it if needed, and select Save. If the edit control is missing or unavailable, your organization may manage the picture; contact IT or HR.
The steps differ for personal Microsoft accounts and for photos changed from Outlook or Teams. First make sure you are signed in to the account whose picture you want to change.
Change a work or school Microsoft 365 profile picture
- Go to myaccount.microsoft.com and sign in with the work or school account you want to update.
- Select the edit icon on your current profile picture.
- Upload or choose a replacement image, then resize it if needed.
- Select Save.
Microsoft says an organization may restrict profile-photo editing. If the edit icon or upload control is missing, ask your administrator or IT/HR team whether the setting is managed. Microsoft also documents starting from an Office app such as Outlook: select your profile picture, choose Update your profile, and follow the photo controls on the profile page. Change the picture from Outlook
Outlook on the web
- Select your profile picture at the top of the page.
- Choose View account.
- In the account pane, select the profile picture, upload a replacement, and choose Apply.

Classic Outlook for Windows
- Open File to reach the Account Information page.
- Under your current photo, select Change.
- In the browser window that opens, sign in again if prompted, upload the photo, adjust its size or rotation if you want, and save.
Microsoft says the photo can take up to 48 hours to appear in classic Outlook. If Change is missing, the organization may control the photo or related information through its IT or HR systems. Microsoft’s classic Outlook instructions describe this route.
Change the picture in Teams
Teams desktop
- Select your profile picture at the top right.
- When the account manager opens, select the photo again.
- Upload an image or remove the current one, then select Save.
Teams mobile
- Tap your current picture or initials to open your profile.
- Select Update photo.
- Take a picture or choose one from your device, then complete the on-screen steps.
Teams for personal use also lets you open the profile and settings controls to choose a photo from the library or remove the current photo. Microsoft notes that a changed Teams picture can take time to update across channels; clearing the Teams cache may help refresh it sooner, but is not a guaranteed fix. Change a personal Microsoft account picture
For a personal Microsoft account, open the account dashboard and select Your info, then add or change the picture. Do not use this route as a substitute for the work or school portal: an organization may control a work profile.
Microsoft says most static image files are supported on PC, macOS, iOS, and Android, but HEIC images and animated GIFs are not supported. If a portrait or landscape photo crops awkwardly, add borders with an image editor to make the image square. Microsoft says the change may take up to 24 hours to appear across apps and devices that use the personal account. Details are in Microsoft’s personal account picture instructions.

If the new picture has not appeared
Update timing depends on the account and app; the figures below are separate service-specific estimates from Microsoft, not one universal refresh schedule.

If the upload succeeded, allow the relevant service time to update before treating the delay as a failed change. For Teams, clearing the cache may help it refresh. For SharePoint Online, Microsoft says not to manually change SharePoint user-photo properties; its documented synchronization uses the photo stored in Microsoft Entra.
