OriginGPS called it the world’s smallest GPS module at launch; that was a company claim tied to 2014, not a verified current market ranking.
What OriginGPS announced at Electronica 2014
OriginGPS dated its announcement November 10, 2014, and positioned Nano Spider for products where space is scarce, including smart watches, other wearables, trackers and digital cameras. The release said the module was 47 percent smaller than “previous solutions,” without specifying the comparison set.
The company described Nano Spider as tracking GPS satellites in view and providing real-time positioning data in NMEA format. Its system-in-package design combined the receiver with a low-noise amplifier (LNA), surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter, temperature-controlled crystal oscillator (TCXO), real-time-clock crystal, power management unit and RF shielding. OriginGPS’s launch announcement is the primary source for these specifications.
What the performance figures mean—and what they do not establish
OriginGPS claimed approximately one-meter accuracy, time to first fix under one second and tracking sensitivity of −163 dBm. It also said the module could provide near-continuous availability with microwatt power consumption and that its Noise Free Zone (NFZ) technology improved noise immunity in difficult reception environments. These are vendor claims from the launch announcement; the sources do not provide independent testing or results for a particular design.

CEO Gal Jacobi framed the product around wearables: “The wearable technology trend requires components that balance a small size with high-performance and best-in-class power consumption,” contemporaneous coverage by Embedded also reported the launch.
How small was Nano Spider?
OriginGPS’s 2014 release gives the dimensions as 4 × 4 × 2.1 mm. A 2015 Acal BFi announcement instead lists 4.1 × 4.1 × 2.1 mm for Nano Spider. The difference is small but relevant when quoting an exact mechanical envelope; these figures come from different sources and dates.

The “world’s smallest” wording should be read as a historical launch claim, not a present-day comparison. In March 2017, OriginGPS described its ORG 4500 series as the smallest GNSS module, at 4.1 × 4.1 mm. In 2022, the company announced the 7 × 7 mm ORG4572-MK05. These later product announcements show that the company’s size claims referred to particular products and dates; they do not establish a market-wide ranking today.
- Acal BFi’s 2015 report lists Nano Spider at 4.1 × 4.1 × 2.1 mm.
- OriginGPS’s 2017 ORG 4500 announcement gives 4.1 × 4.1 mm and makes a date-specific smallest-GNSS-module claim.
- OriginGPS’s 2022 ORG4572-MK05 announcement lists dimensions of 7 × 7 mm.
Was Nano Spider a GPS tracker you could use on its own?
No: the announced product was an embedded GPS receiver module, not a standalone tracker. It was intended to be incorporated into a host product, which could then use its positioning data. The release describes an integrated package but does not establish whether a particular design needs an antenna, development board or other accessory. The available announcements also do not establish whether Nano Spider remains in production, is currently available, or has a current price.
