Yes—Windsurf can inspect web pages through MCP. Configure Windsurf as the MCP client, connect a browser server such as Playwright MCP, and ask Cascade to navigate, interact, and capture screenshots. Playwright normally gives the model an accessibility tree (roles, text, and element references); add a screenshot-focused server when you need pixel-level evidence of layout, rendering, or visual regressions.
What “giving Windsurf eyes” means
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is the connection layer. Windsurf remains the client, while an MCP server exposes browser tools. The server can open a URL, click controls, fill forms, switch tabs, and return page information or images to Cascade.
These are complementary representations:
- Accessibility snapshots: structured roles, names, text, and references. They are compact and usually more dependable for finding a button or filling a form.
- Pixel screenshots: the rendered page as an image. They reveal spacing, typography, responsive breakpoints, overlays, missing images, and visual regressions that a semantic tree cannot show.
Playwright’s documentation describes its MCP server as browser automation through structured accessibility snapshots: Playwright MCP guide. For images delivered as MCP content, Openkova’s screenshot server returns inline image/png bytes rather than a URL: Openkova MCP screenshot tool.
Prerequisites and security decisions
- Install Node.js 20 or newer for the current Playwright MCP setup. Microsoft’s Windsurf example also calls for Windsurf and Node.js LTS: Windsurf MCP instructions.
- Use a current Windsurf installation with Cascade enabled.
- Decide whether the browser should use a persistent profile (convenient for existing logins) or an isolated profile (safer and reproducible).
- Only connect trusted MCP servers. Playwright documents its arbitrary-code capability as RCE-equivalent; do not enable such tooling for an untrusted client or project.
A local Chromium server can reach localhost, staging systems, VPN-only hosts, and authenticated pages available to that browser. That power also makes browser profiles, cookies, and credentials part of your trust boundary. Use a least-privilege account and a dedicated profile for testing.

Configure Playwright MCP in Windsurf
- Install Node.js 20 or newer and verify it with
node --version. - In Windsurf, open File > Preferences > Windsurf Settings > Manage MCPs.
- Choose View raw config to edit

}- Save the file and restart or reload Windsurf so the server is discovered.
- In a new Cascade conversation, ask: “Open https://example.com, report the page title, and take a screenshot.” Confirm that Cascade lists the Playwright tools before testing a private site.
The npx command downloads and launches the package when Windsurf starts the server. Pin a package version in a controlled environment if you need repeatable builds rather than the moving @latest tag.
Useful first prompts
- “Navigate to our staging URL, wait for the login form, and describe the accessibility snapshot.”
- “Open the pricing page, switch to the annual plan, and capture the result.”
- “Take a screenshot at a mobile viewport and list visible overflow or clipped text.”
Be explicit about the URL, required wait condition, viewport, and whether you want semantic inspection, an image, or both.
Add a screenshot-first local server
Playwright is excellent for semantic interaction, but a screenshot-focused server is useful when the image itself must be placed in the model context. Openkova MCP documents tools named screenshot_url, screenshot_snippet, and crawl_url; its Chromium process returns inline PNG content. Follow its installation and configuration instructions at Openkova’s documentation, then add its command and arguments to the same mcpServers object using the exact values supplied by that project.
After restarting Windsurf, ask Cascade to call screenshot_url for a public page or your local application. For a focused visual check, use screenshot_snippet when you want a particular HTML fragment. Use crawl_url only when you intentionally need multiple pages; crawling creates more browser work and more image content.

Make screenshots useful to an AI agent
Control the viewport and payload
Desktop and mobile layouts can differ radically. Request the viewport that matches the defect you are investigating. PNG preserves exact pixels but can consume more context; JPEG or WebP is smaller when slight visual loss is acceptable. Chrome DevTools MCP exposes format (png, jpeg, or webp), quality, and maximum width or height controls. Its configuration reference is Chrome DevTools MCP configuration.
Wait for the real page state
Do not capture immediately after navigation when the page lazy-loads images or hydrates JavaScript. Wait for a selector, a known delay, or network idle, then capture. If a cookie dialog, newsletter prompt, or chat launcher obscures the content, dismiss it deliberately or hide it in a test-only stylesheet. Record the wait condition in your prompt so another run is reproducible.
Use vision mode only when coordinates are necessary
Chrome DevTools MCP’s experimental vision mode adds coordinate-based tools such as click_at. It generally requires a computer-use model that can derive accurate coordinates from the screenshot. Prefer accessibility references for normal buttons and forms; coordinates are more fragile across viewport sizes, zoom levels, and responsive changes.
Local, managed, persistent, and isolated browser choices

For production checks, an isolated profile with seeded test data is usually easier to audit. For a one-off inspection of a VPN-only staging page, a local persistent session may be practical—provided the MCP client and server are trusted.

Common failures and fixes
Windsurf does not show the server
Confirm the JSON is valid, the key is under mcpServers, and the command is available on Windsurf’s PATH. Reload Windsurf after saving. Run npx @playwright/mcp@latest in a terminal to expose Node or network errors before debugging the editor.
Node version error
Install Node.js 20 or newer, restart Windsurf so it inherits the new PATH, and verify with node --version. On managed machines, ensure the editor and terminal use the same Node installation.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Increase the wait: ask the server to wait for a meaningful selector or network idle. Check that the URL is reachable from the browser machine, not merely from your host browser. Lazy images may require scrolling or a full-page option. A page blocked by a bot check or authentication will need an allowed test account or a different capture target.
Cascade clicks the wrong element
Ask for an accessibility snapshot first and identify the element by role and accessible name. Avoid coordinate clicks unless vision mode is required; if you must use coordinates, fix the viewport and zoom.

Private pages expose too much
Stop the server, revoke the profile’s cookies, and switch to an isolated profile. Restrict MCP access to trusted workspaces and never paste production secrets into prompts.
Context becomes too large
Capture the relevant element or a reduced viewport instead of a full page. Prefer JPEG or WebP when exact pixel fidelity is not required, and avoid crawling unrelated pages.
