There is no evidence-based universal winner among web crawlers: the right choice depends on whether you need to discover pages across a domain, fetch a known list of URLs, render JavaScript, extract structured fields, or run the crawler yourself. This shortlist names seven options, but it is not a tested ranking. Product-level details are available here for Firecrawl and Zyte API; for the other candidates, verify current official documentation and test your permitted target sites before choosing.
How to choose a web crawling tool
“Crawling” can mean discovering and visiting many linked pages, while “scraping” often means extracting selected information from pages. Tools may do one or both. Compare them against the job you actually need done rather than treating the terms—or product categories—as interchangeable.
- Scope: Do you supply individual URLs, or should the tool discover pages by following links and sitemaps?
- Rendering: Does the target require a browser to render JavaScript, or will an HTTP response provide the needed content?
- Output: Do you need page text, HTML, links, metadata, or fields returned in a defined JSON schema?
- Operations: Do you want a managed service, software you run and control, or a no-code workflow?
- Resilience: How will the tool handle retries, proxies, and sites with different access difficulty?
- Cost: Estimate the workload with your expected page count, rendering needs, extraction mode, and target-site difficulty.
- Permission and success: Test only on sites you are authorized to access, and judge success on those targets—not on a generic benchmark.
These criteria matter because hosted APIs, self-run code, and no-code products do not share a fair single benchmark by default. A 2026 comparison guide names options across these categories, but says its test did not include open-source tools or Octoparse in the same way. Its findings therefore cannot establish a universal ranking.
Seven options to evaluate
The table is a shortlist, not a claim that these are the seven best products or that they have been independently tested here. The 2026 comparative guide names these products among available options. Its published summary does not establish current product details for five of them; check their official documentation before relying on a particular capability or price.

Firecrawl: domain crawling and AI-ready output
Firecrawl describes its Crawl workflow as starting from a domain and visiting site subpages. It says the crawler uses sitemaps and recursively followed links to discover URLs, supports include and exclude controls, and renders pages in Chromium. Markdown is the default output; the vendor also lists JSON, HTML, screenshots, links, and metadata options. These are Firecrawl’s stated capabilities, not independently measured results.
Credit use and cost checks
Firecrawl’s pricing information, accessed in 2026, says free accounts receive 1,000 credits per month. The vendor lists one credit per page crawled, an additional four credits per page for JSON mode, and one credit per PDF page parsed. These are vendor-published plan details that can change; confirm the live pricing terms and calculate the total for your intended crawl before committing.

When to test it
Try Firecrawl when you need a site-wide discovery workflow and want clean page content or structured output without assembling every crawling component yourself. In a representative trial, check whether the discovered URL set is complete enough, whether rendering captures the content you need, and whether the selected output and credit use fit your pipeline.
Zyte API: managed extraction with difficulty-based pricing
Zyte describes its API as a managed extraction service that selects and rotates proxies according to website complexity. It also offers browser rendering and content extraction into a configured format and schema. The vendor currently lists five site-difficulty tiers, so the same request volume can have different costs depending on the target and whether browser rendering is used.

Published pay-as-you-go rates
Zyte’s 2026 pricing page lists pay-as-you-go HTTP response-body rates of $0.13–$1.27 per 1,000 requests and browser-rendered rates of $1.01–$16.08 per 1,000 requests. The ranges depend on site tier, request type, and pricing terms; they are not a guaranteed quote for a particular target. Zyte lists different ranges for higher monthly commitments.
When to test it
Evaluate Zyte when you want the provider to manage proxy selection and need to compare ordinary HTTP fetching with browser rendering. Estimate costs against a representative target site and monthly workload, then verify that the returned fields satisfy your schema. Do not assume the lowest published rate applies to your site.

Turn the shortlist into a defensible decision
- Define the workload. Record whether you need a fixed URL list or site discovery, approximate page volume, refresh frequency, output format, and any rendering requirement.
- Filter by deployment model. Decide whether your team wants a managed API, software it operates, or a no-code process. Compare candidates within those categories before comparing unlike products.
- Run the same permitted sample. Use representative pages from the sites you are authorized to access. Track discovered URLs, usable content, schema accuracy, failures, and the effort required to recover from them.
- Price the actual workflow. Include page or request volume, browser rendering, structured extraction, site difficulty, and recurring usage. For metered services, verify current terms rather than extrapolating from a headline rate.
- Choose on operational fit. Consider who owns retries, monitoring, changes when the target site changes, and ongoing maintenance—not just whether a demonstration request succeeds.
What the 2026 comparisons can and cannot tell you
A comparative guide published in 2026 reports testing tools on bot-protected sites, but explicitly says it did not test open-source tools or Octoparse in the same way. Those results are that guide’s findings under its own methodology; they are not a universal benchmark or independently replicated evidence. A separate 2026 survey report from Apify and The Web Scraping Club says its survey was conducted in December 2025 among their communities. Respondent opinions provide industry context, not proof that a particular product is best.
A Firecrawl-authored guide also compares APIs, but vendor-authored comparisons should be treated as a starting point for checking products, not neutral proof of superiority. For the five shortlist entries without product-level evidence above, consult the relevant current official documentation and test the workload yourself before making a selection.
