Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →No—RAG does not automatically require a separate vector database. You can retrieve with full-text search, add vector search to an existing database such as PostgreSQL, use a vector-search library such as FAISS, or combine lexical and vector results. The right choice depends on what your users ask, how your data is organized, and the relevance, latency, filtering, and operating requirements you need to meet.
Does RAG need vector search at all?
No. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) needs a way to find useful source material for a query; it does not prescribe a particular search method. Lexical, or full-text, search finds matches based on words and terms. Vector search finds content with similar meaning, even when the wording differs. Each is useful for different questions.
- Lexical search is a strong fit for exact terms such as product names, error codes, dates, identifiers, and specialized vocabulary. It can miss a passage that answers the question when the passage uses different wording.
- Vector search is useful for conceptual similarity and variations in phrasing. It is not a guarantee that exact names, codes, or other precise terms will rank as desired.
So “Do I need vector search for RAG?” is a separate question from “Do I need a vector database?” You may choose vector retrieval without adopting a separate vector-database product.
Can I use PostgreSQL for RAG?
Yes. PostgreSQL can support both lexical and vector retrieval. Its GIN indexes support indexed full-text search, while the pgvector extension adds vector similarity search. This can be a practical path when your application already stores its data in PostgreSQL and you want to keep retrieval close to that data.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
pgvector performs exact nearest-neighbor search by default. It also offers optional approximate indexes, including HNSW and IVFFlat. Approximate search trades some recall for speed, so evaluate whether it still returns the relevant material for your representative questions rather than assuming faster results are equivalent.
PostgreSQL’s full-text indexing is documented in the PostgreSQL GIN documentation, and pgvector describes its search modes and PostgreSQL hybrid-search options in the pgvector README.

What are the alternatives to a dedicated vector database?
| Approach | Consider it when | Important tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Full-text search | Queries depend on exact words, names, dates, codes, or specialist terminology. | It may miss relevant content expressed with different words. PostgreSQL GIN indexes support indexed full-text search. |
| Vectors in an existing database | You already use PostgreSQL and want vector retrieval alongside application data. | pgvector offers exact search by default and optional approximate HNSW or IVFFlat indexes. Approximate indexing trades recall for speed and needs evaluation. |
| Local vector-search library | You want application-controlled vector similarity search without adopting a managed vector service. | FAISS is a vector-search library, not evidence that every database or hosted-service feature is included; integration and operations remain design responsibilities. |
| Hybrid search | Both conceptual similarity and exact-term matching matter. | It combines text and vector result lists; fusion, filters, and reranking add work that can affect latency and resource use. |
| Managed hybrid search | You want a hosted service that integrates full-text and vector retrieval. | Assess the service’s cost and operational fit for your workload rather than assuming a managed service is automatically simpler or more relevant. |
FAISS describes itself as a library for efficient similarity search and clustering of dense vectors in its project README. Choosing a library rather than a hosted service changes where responsibilities sit; it does not eliminate the need to plan how search connects to your application and data.
When is hybrid search worth considering?
Hybrid retrieval runs lexical and vector searches and merges their results. This can help when a query needs semantic matching but also contains terms that must be matched precisely. Azure AI Search documents hybrid queries and Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF), a method for combining ranked result lists, in its hybrid search overview.

Microsoft Learn describes the underlying distinction this way: “Hybrid search combines results from both full-text and vector queries, which use different ranking functions such as BM25 for text, and Hierarchical Navigable Small World (HNSW) and exhaustive K Nearest Neighbors (eKNN) for vectors.” The practical point is that the two searches rank results differently; a fusion step helps combine their lists rather than treating their scores as directly interchangeable.
Hybrid retrieval can also mean more work per query. Microsoft’s Azure AI Search hybrid-query guidance cautions that increasing lexical candidate contribution alongside expensive vector settings and semantic reranking can increase CPU and memory pressure, latency, and throttling risk. Tune for the query patterns and service limits you actually have.

How should you choose a RAG retrieval architecture?
Compare options using real questions from your application, not only an abstract preference for a database type. The cited documentation establishes available capabilities and tradeoffs, but it does not establish a universal winner or provide neutral benchmark results for your corpus.
- Build a representative question set. Include exact-name and identifier queries, questions with paraphrased wording, and questions that combine both. Use questions your users are likely to ask.
- Compare retrieved passages. Check whether the material needed to answer each question appears in the results. Assess exact-match behavior as well as conceptual relevance.
- Test filters and data growth. Verify that metadata filters behave as required and that the approach fits your current corpus and expected growth.
- Measure speed and capacity. Observe latency and throughput under realistic use. For approximate vector indexes, measure recall as well as speed; for hybrid search, account for fusion, filtering, and any semantic reranking.
- Include operating burden and cost. Consider what your team must deploy, integrate, monitor, tune, and pay for. A separate service may be justified by your requirements, but it is not a prerequisite imposed by RAG.
When does a separate vector database make sense?
A dedicated vector database or managed search service is a reasonable choice when your measured workload or operational requirements justify it—for example, if it better meets your relevance, latency, filtering, or scale needs than the alternatives available to your team. The decision is not “vector database or no RAG.” It is which retrieval architecture meets your needs with acceptable quality, cost, and operational complexity.
