Step 1: Download Update Assistant

The first step to update Windows 10 is to download the Update Assistant. Here are the steps.

  • Click this link from a browser on your Windows 10 PC.
  • Then, when the page opens, click Update now. The Save As window will open.

Step 1: Download  Windows 10 Update Assistant
  • On the Save As window, select a folder to save the Update Assistant.
Some browsers (like Firefox) may display a Save file window – see the second image below. If you receive a window like the second image, click Save file. Firefox will automatically save the file to your Downloads folder.

Step 2: Update with Update Assistant

  • Open the folder you saved the Update Assistant and double-click it. You will receive a User Access Control (UAC) confirmation. On the UAC window, click Yes.
Depending on the available Windows 10 version when you perform your upgrade, the file name may be different from the file name shown in the image below.

  • The update tool may take a short while to get ready. When the wizard displays a screen like the one shown below, on the bottom right of the screen, click Update Now.
The information displayed on this screen may be different – depending on the Windows 10 version you are upgrading to.
Step 2: Update Windows 10 with Windows 10 Update Assistant
  • The update tool will perform a compatibility check. Wait for the check to complete. Then, proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Update Windows 10 with Windows 10 Update Assistant
  • If your PC passes the compatibility test, the tool will proceed to Getting your update ready – it will start downloading the update.
This step will take a while. Wait for the update wizard to display the next screen. Wheil the update is downloading, you could minimize the tool and continue using your PC. If you minimize the update tool, to open it again, click the shortcut on your desktop – see the second image below.
Step 2: Update Windows 10 with Windows 10 Update Assistant
  • When the assistant finishes downloading the update, it will start updating Windows 10 automatically.
You may minimize the tool and continue working on your PC.
  • When the update is downloaded, the assistant will prompt you to restart your PC. It will also initiate a restart count-down. To restart immediately, click Restart now.
If you DO NOT want your PC to restart automatically (after the count-down), on the bottom left of the update tool, click Restart later. Then select when you want the update wizard to restart your PC and install the update. Otherwise, after the 30-minute count-down, your PC will restart automatically and the update will install.
  • If you click Restart now or if the countdown reaches zero, you will receive a restart notification.
  • When your PC restarts, it will display a screen like the one below. During the update process, the PC will restart several times.
  • When the update is installed, your Windows 10 logon screen will be displayed. Login with the same account you use to login to your PC.
  • Once you login to your PC, the final stages of the update will commence. During these final stages, you may be prompted to complete some privacy settings. For all the settings, select an option and click Accept.
  • Finally, when you see a screen like the one below, your Windows 10 is updated! To exit the Windows 10 Update Assistant, on the bottom right of the tool, click Exit.
