If Google Search Console shows zero clicks for a month, first check the unfiltered Performance → Search results report for the correct property and date range. A zero in a filtered query or page table does not necessarily mean the site received no Google Search clicks: anonymized queries can be absent from query rows, and tables can aggregate differently from the chart. Google Analytics reports what visitors did after arriving; its sessions are not a replacement for Search Console’s Search-click count.

Start with the report that counts Search clicks

In Google Search Console, open Performance → Search results. Select the property that covers the affected canonical URLs, choose the full month, and confirm the search type you mean: Web, Image, Video, or News. Search Console defines a click as a user clicking the site from Google Search results. It reports clicks alongside impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position. Google’s Performance report documentation explains these metrics and report controls.

Read the total clicks in the report chart before drawing a conclusion from an individual table row. Chart totals may be aggregated by property, while a Pages table is organized by page; those figures need not match. Queries, Pages, Countries, Devices, Search appearance, and Dates answer different questions, so a zero in one dimension is not automatically a zero for the whole property.

Remove filters before interpreting a zero

Clear query, page, country, device, and search-appearance filters, then inspect the report-level chart for the month. A filter narrows the report to the selected subset; it does not establish that the rest of the site had no clicks.

Query rows have an additional limitation: Google omits anonymized queries from query tables for privacy. Those clicks remain included in unfiltered chart totals, but query filters can exclude them. API responses and exports can also be subject to row limits, so a list of returned rows should not be mistaken for the complete total. See Search Console’s report overview, Google’s guide to performance reports, and Google Search Central’s explanation of performance-data filtering and limits.

Check whether the month reflects a real decline

Once the property, month, search type, and filters are correct, compare the period with a comparable previous period and, where useful, the same period a year earlier. Keep the property and URL scope, date range, search type, country, device, and other filters consistent. Then look at clicks alongside impressions and CTR rather than treating clicks alone as a diagnosis.

If clicks and impressions both fell

A simultaneous drop can point to reduced visibility or an indexing issue, but the chart alone does not identify the cause. Check whether the decline is limited to a search type, country, device, or set of pages. For a site-wide drop, review the Page indexing report; for a group of affected URLs, use URL Inspection on representative pages.

If impressions stayed similar but clicks fell

When impressions are broadly stable and clicks decline, Google recommends examining titles and snippets, as well as competing rich results that may affect whether people choose your result. This pattern is a reason to investigate the search presentation, not proof of a particular cause.

Google’s recommended sequence for diagnosing traffic drops is in Debug Google Search Traffic Drops.

Use Analytics to understand visits, not to replace the click count

Search Console and Google Analytics measure different stages. Search Console is the source of truth for Search performance; Analytics is the source of truth for behavior inside the site. As a result, Search Console clicks and Analytics sessions are not expected to be identical. A mismatch by itself does not establish a tracking failure.

After checking Search Console, use Analytics to investigate Google organic sessions, landing pages, engagement, and conversions. When comparing the tools, align date ranges and relevant filters as closely as possible, and look at overall trends rather than demanding exact equality. Google’s guidance on using Search Console and Google Analytics data for SEO describes their different roles and notes that fresh data can be delayed by a couple of days.

Account for reporting delay and data retention

Recent Search Console data may not yet be complete: the 24-hour report view can contain preliminary data, and data shown in a combined dashboard may be delayed by a couple of days. If the month includes very recent days, allow for that reporting lag before treating its latest values as final. The Performance report documentation describes preliminary data; Google’s Search Console and Analytics guidance discusses dashboard delays.

Search Console’s interface provides up to 16 months of data. For longer retention or more flexible analysis, Google documents the Search Analytics API and bulk data exports. The API documentation explains querying and batching data: Query your Google Search analytics data. These options help preserve or retrieve data; they do not change what a click means.
