Start by checking whether capture fails on every screen or only inside one app, protected field, or managed remote session. If it fails everywhere, use another built-in capture method and verify where the image was sent. If it fails only in one protected context, the app or administrator may be blocking capture intentionally; use an approved export or contact support rather than trying to bypass the restriction.
Find out what kind of screenshot failure you have
Take a test capture on a harmless screen: the Windows desktop, an Android home screen, or another ordinary app. Then classify the result.

This scope test prevents a common mistake: changing keyboard settings when only a banking app is protected, or blaming an app when the operating system never receives the shortcut.
Windows: alternatives when the screenshot shortcut stopped working
Use Snipping Tool
- Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch it.
- Choose a capture mode: freeform, rectangular, window, or full-screen.
- Select the area or window. The result appears in the Snipping Tool window.
- Use the window’s controls to edit, save, or share the image.
If this route works, the original shortcut or keyboard—not the display itself—is the likely problem.

Open the capture overlay
Press Windows + Shift + S. Select a rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip. Look for the Snipping Tool notification or open Snipping Tool to edit and save the result. A selection may be copied to the clipboard before it is saved as a file, so do not assume that no file means the capture failed.
Use Print Screen and check the clipboard
Press Print Screen to copy the full screen to the clipboard. Paste it into Paint, an email, or another image-capable application, then save it. On some keyboards the key is labeled PrtSc, and a function key or keyboard utility may require Fn as well.
When a remote desktop is missing from the image
A managed Azure Virtual Desktop session can have screen-capture protection enabled. Microsoft’s documented behavior is that, when this protection is enabled, remote content is automatically blocked in screenshots and screen sharing. If your local desktop captures normally but the remote window is blank or absent, ask the administrator whether protection is enabled and which approved export or support workflow is available. A local shortcut change cannot override that policy.
Android: fix the shortcut, then check for protected content
Try the standard capture methods
- Press Power and Volume Down at the same time.
- If that does not work, hold Power for several seconds and choose Screenshot if the power menu offers it.
- Open the notification or gallery prompt to confirm where the image was stored.
Button placement and menus vary by handset. If neither method works across ordinary screens, Google directs you to the phone manufacturer’s support site for model-specific help. On Android 12 and later, scrolling screenshots are available on most screens that allow scrolling; an individual app can still disable capture.

Why an Android screenshot is black or prohibited
Android apps can mark an activity as secure so its contents do not appear in screenshots or on non-secure displays. Android Developers describes this mechanism as setting the FLAG_SECURE display flag when an app does not want activity contents to appear in screenshots. A password manager, financial app, streaming screen, or work app may therefore show a black area or an explicit prohibition while the home screen captures normally.
Google Play requires apps to respect another app’s FLAG_SECURE declaration and disallows bypass workarounds. Do not install a tool that promises to defeat the restriction. Instead, use the app’s export, download, print, or sharing feature, or ask the app publisher or your organization’s administrator for an approved way to retain the information.
Why a screenshot can be blank even when the shortcut responds
Protected application windows
A capture can be created successfully while a protected region is replaced with black pixels. Compare the same device with an unprotected screen. If only one app or field is affected, the control belongs to that app or an administrator, not to the screenshot shortcut.
Managed remote sessions
Remote-desktop products can deliberately suppress remote pixels in local screenshots and screen sharing. Treat a blank remote window as a policy signal when ordinary local windows capture correctly.

Failed or incomplete page rendering
When capturing a web page, a blank result can also mean that the page timed out, failed to load, or was challenged by a bot check. Refresh the page and test it interactively before changing operating-system settings. If the page itself is blank in the browser, a screenshot tool cannot recover content that was never rendered.
What to do when the image saved somewhere unexpected
- On Windows, inspect the Snipping Tool preview and paste the clipboard into an image editor.
- Check your screenshot or Pictures folder, including cloud-sync locations.
- On Android, open the notification immediately after capture, then look in the device’s Screenshots album.
- Use clipboard history on Windows (Windows + V) if it is enabled and the capture was copied rather than saved.
Destination problems often look like capture failures. Confirm that an image exists before reinstalling drivers or changing security settings.
When an administrator or app owner controls the result
Separate the person who presses the shortcut from the party that controls the pixels. The operating system controls the shortcut; the device maker controls model-specific buttons; an app developer controls protected activities; and a workplace administrator can control managed sessions. If the message names a security policy, or the failure follows one work profile, ask the administrator for an approved report, export, or recording method. Keep sensitive data out of unapproved workarounds.

- Capture an ordinary screen to establish whether the failure is global or limited.
- Use a second built-in route: Snipping Tool, Windows + Shift + S, or Print Screen on Windows; Power + Volume Down or the power menu on Android.
- Inspect the clipboard, preview, notification, and screenshot folder before assuming the image vanished.
- Record the exact symptom: no response, missing file, black region, or policy message.
