USPS also uses formats such as EA#########US and EC#########US.
What an E-prefix tracking number usually means
Most complete postal identifiers beginning with EA through EZ are associated with EMS (Express Mail Service), an international express service operated through participating national postal organizations rather than one private delivery company. See the official EMS description.
The first letter alone is not enough. A single E followed by digits could be a private logistics reference, marketplace number, freight-forwarder reference, or a nonstandard domestic code. Reliable identification requires the complete number, including its second letter and final two-letter suffix.
How to read the complete number

^E[A-Z][0-9]{9}[A-Z]{2}$Labels often insert spaces, so remove spaces before checking the pattern. Under the UPU S10 standard, the first two letters are a service indicator. The EA–EZ range is used for EMS-related services, subject to the standard’s allocation rules. The nine digits include the serial number and check digit.
The final two letters generally identify the country of the issuing postal administration. They do not necessarily show the parcel’s current location or the company that will deliver it at your door.

USPS lists the EA...US and EC...US examples on its Tracking page. That makes USPS the sensible first choice for those specific formats, but an E prefix does not mean every such number belongs to USPS.

- Service: EMS or, for some USPS formats, Priority Mail Express or Priority Mail Express International.
- Issuing postal operator: The national post that created the S10 identifier.
- Transport intermediary: A logistics company moving the parcel between facilities before postal handoff.
- Final-mile operator: The postal service or courier delivering in the destination country.
For example, a number ending in CN may be issued under China’s postal system and later receive scans from USPS after entering the United States. A number ending in US can likewise be processed by a foreign postal operator before delivery abroad.
Where to track an E-prefix number
- Start with USPS when appropriate. Use USPS Tracking if the number ends in
US, is destined for the United States, or matches the USPSEA...USorEC...USexamples. Enter the letters and digits exactly as supplied. - Try official EMS tracking. For a 13-character number beginning
EAthroughEZ, use the EMS global tracking page, which requests a 13-digit item number. - Check the origin-country postal operator. A suffix such as
CN,KR, orJPpoints to the postal administration that issued the identifier. Use that administration’s official tracker. - Check the destination postal operator. International postal data may appear only after the item reaches the destination country’s exchange or delivery network.
- Ask the seller or marketplace. If no official postal system recognizes the number, the seller may have supplied an internal reference rather than the actual postal tracking identifier.
Do not add a new prefix, punctuation, or spaces unless the tracking form specifically displays them.

Why USPS may show no tracking information yet
A valid number can exist before USPS has a visible event. USPS explains in its tracking guidance that tracking may begin when the sender or shipping partner electronically notifies USPS to expect a package. That electronic pre-advice is not the same as a physical acceptance scan.
- The originating post created the number but has not transmitted an event to USPS.
- The parcel has not entered the USPS network or reached the inbound exchange point.
- USPS has received pre-advice but has not recorded a physical scan.
- The item is better tracked through EMS or the origin postal operator at this stage.
- The seller provided a marketplace or freight-forwarder reference instead of the postal number.
If the number remains unrecognized, contact the seller rather than assuming it is invalid. Request the actual carrier, complete tracking number, shipping service, origin country, and expected destination-country handoff carrier.

What if the number is not 13 characters?
Do not classify it as EMS solely because it starts with E. Compare the full code with the likely carrier’s published formats and ask the sender which service created it. USPS also uses numeric formats for domestic Tracking, Priority Mail, Certified Mail, and other services, so an E-prefix code outside the S10 pattern may belong to a different system.
Likewise, a 13-character pattern does not authenticate the shipment or the sender. It only indicates that the code resembles a standardized postal identifier.
Bottom line
The best answer is: an E-starting number is usually an EMS or international postal express identifier when its full format is EA–EZ plus nine digits and a two-letter country suffix, but the E alone does not identify the carrier. Read the entire number, use the suffix to find the issuing postal administration, and check USPS, EMS, and the relevant postal operators in that order.
