For a rare Pokémon card, choose the purchase route that gives you card-specific listing evidence, clear payment and dispute handling, and return terms you can live with. TCGplayer Direct, eligible eBay listings with Authenticity Guarantee, auctions, and specialist dealers each offer different checks—not a guarantee that a card is authentic, in the stated condition, or worth its asking price.
The safest practical choice depends on the exact card, listing eligibility, your location, and how much recourse you would have if something goes wrong. Verify the protections on the individual listing before paying.
Compare the main places to buy
| Purchase route | What its published policy says | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| TCGplayer Direct | TCGplayer says Pokémon singles fulfilled through Direct are checked at its Authentication Center. Its Safeguard describes recourse for missing or not-as-described orders. Direct availability is indicated on product or listing pages and depends on stock at the center. TCGplayer Direct; TCGplayer Safeguard. | Confirm this specific card is Direct-qualified and will be in the Direct package. Check the order’s claim window and keep order details. If buying internationally, review shipping and import charges shown for your location. |
| TCGplayer Marketplace seller | Safeguard covers missing and not-as-described orders. For suspected counterfeits, TCGplayer says it must receive the card for review before refund eligibility. Not every marketplace purchase is Direct-fulfilled. TCGplayer Safeguard; counterfeit guidance. | Check seller history, card-specific photos, condition wording, shipping and tracking, and current claim deadlines. Do not assume a marketplace listing receives Direct’s inspection. |
| eBay Authenticity Guarantee | Eligible trading-card listings display a badge and pass through physical inspection; eBay says the service does not grade or regrade cards. The US program’s policy describes a $200 price threshold, approved graders for graded cards, and continental-US location requirements. eBay Authenticity Guarantee for Trading Cards; eBay buyer information. | Check that the exact listing has the badge and qualifies by price, card type, grader, and buyer/seller location. Review the seller’s return policy: some authenticated purchases are final sale. eBay’s page describes a three-day window for transit-damage requests on final-sale cards; confirm current terms. |
| Fanatics Collect auction | Weekly Auction includes sports and TCG cards; Premier Auction is curated for high-end collectibles. Fanatics Collect states a 20% buyer premium. Its guarantee addresses whether the received card matches the listing image, description, and certificate number; it does not warrant the third-party grader’s assessment. Fanatics Collect; Fanatics Collect Terms of Use. | Calculate the total with premium, taxes, shipping, and any vault withdrawal or fulfillment charges. Read the listing and current terms: sales are generally final except in limited circumstances. |
| Fanatics Collect Buy Now | Fanatics says Buy Now purchases have no buyer premium and sellers may permit offers; shipping or fulfillment charges may still apply. Fanatics Collect. | Compare the full purchase total with relevant completed sales. No buyer premium does not establish that the fixed asking price is fair. |
| Specialist local game store or dealer | TCGplayer says some local game stores specializing in trading cards can review a questionable card and offer an opinion. That is not a guarantee, and dealer protections vary. TCGplayer counterfeit guidance. | Ask for written condition and authenticity terms, return policy, provenance or certification details, and a receipt. Ask the reviewer to explain the basis for an opinion. |
How to check a specific card listing
Match the exact card, not just the name
Confirm the card name, set, card number, language, edition or printing, rarity, and any stamp or variant. For a graded card, compare the label and certification number with the grading company’s lookup record and make sure the listing photographs show the card being sold. Generic stock images are weak evidence for an expensive purchase.
Separate authenticity, condition, and value
These are different questions. An inspection may check that an item matches the order without assigning a grade. A grading label is an assessment under that grader’s standards, not proof that the asking price is reasonable. eBay explicitly says its Authenticity Guarantee does not grade or regrade cards. Read the scope of any authentication or guarantee rather than treating a badge or slab as an unlimited promise.

PSA’s guarantee applies only to eligible PSA-graded cards and is subject to active certification, exclusions, proof-of-purchase requirements, and PSA-selected remedies. Its terms state a per-card cap of $250,000 and a lifetime cap of $500,000 per person; depending on the case, PSA may offer to buy an eligible card at a determined current market value or refund a value difference in certain grade cases. Those terms do not amount to a blanket cash-back promise. PSA Guarantee.
Ask for useful evidence and compare like with like
- Request clear front and back images, plus close views of corners, edges, surface, and holo pattern where relevant.
- For value, compare completed sales of the same card and printing, language, raw or graded status, grade company and grade, and condition. Account for sale date and total buyer-paid cost.
- Treat a price far below comparable sales as a reason to investigate further. TCGplayer specifically advises caution when an offer—particularly a bulk deal—carries a very large discount. TCGplayer counterfeit guidance.
Understand auction costs before bidding
Fanatics Collect states a 20% buyer premium on auction sales. A hypothetical $1,000 winning bid therefore becomes $1,200 before taxes and shipping; this is fee arithmetic, not a market-price example. Add any insurance, shipping, tax, and vault withdrawal or fulfillment charge before setting your maximum. For Buy Now, the platform says there is no buyer premium, although shipping and fulfillment costs may apply. Fanatics Collect Terms of Use; Fanatics Collect.

- Before ordering: Save the listing, photographs, description, seller details, certification number, return terms, and the platform’s current claim deadline. Check whether the listing is final sale and how damage, mismatch, or suspected counterfeiting is reported.
- At delivery: Keep the packaging and tracking information. Inspect the card promptly and photograph any damage or mismatch before altering the card or packaging.
- If there is a problem: Contact the platform through its required process and retain all communications. TCGplayer’s help page states that missing and not-as-described claims must be raised within 30 calendar days of estimated delivery. Its suspected-counterfeit process requires the card to be sent in for review. eBay describes a three-day window for transit-damage requests on final-sale cards. These policies and deadlines can change, so use the current policy for your purchase and location. TCGplayer Safeguard; counterfeit guidance; eBay Authenticity Guarantee.
Choose the route that fits your situation
- For a single sold through TCGplayer: Prefer a listing explicitly fulfilled through Direct if its inspection and Safeguard terms suit your needs; distinguish it from ordinary marketplace fulfillment.
- For a higher-priced eBay card: Use the Authenticity Guarantee only when the actual listing displays the badge and meets the program’s price, card, grader, and geographic requirements.
- For an auction: Set a maximum from the all-in amount you will pay, not the bid alone, and account for the stated premium and other charges.
- For an in-person purchase: A specialist’s review may help, but request an explanation and written transaction terms rather than treating an opinion as a guarantee.
Platform policies, eligibility, fees, and shipping vary by location and may change. Check the buyer-facing policy version that applies where you live before purchasing.
