Computer Configuration is a branch in the Local Group Policy Editor—not a page in the Windows Settings app. Open the editor by searching for Edit group policy or running gpedit.msc, then expand Local Computer Policy in the left pane and select Computer Configuration.
Open Computer Configuration in the Local Group Policy Editor
- Open the editor. Select Start, search for Edit group policy or
gpedit.msc, then open the Local Group Policy Editor. Microsoft also documents the Run-dialog route: press Windows+R, entergpedit.msc, and press Enter. See Microsoft’s instructions for opening system configuration tools. - Find the branch. In the editor’s left pane, expand Local Computer Policy if necessary. Select or expand Computer Configuration. It appears alongside User Configuration.
- Continue to the policy named in your instructions. The subfolder depends on the setting. For example, Microsoft gives Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System as a path for a particular Windows 11 policy. That is an example, not a universal destination; see Microsoft’s policy-path example.
Why you may not see it in Settings
Computer Configuration is part of the Local Group Policy Editor’s console tree. It is not a menu in the Windows Settings app. In the editor, Computer Configuration and User Configuration are separate branches; Windows settings are represented under both branches. Which branch applies depends on the policy you are following. Microsoft describes these branches in its guide to working with local Group Policy Objects.
If the editor or branch is missing
If Windows says it cannot find gpedit.msc, check your Windows edition. Microsoft states that the Local Group Policy Editor is unavailable in Windows Home. On an edition where the editor is available, Computer Configuration is inside Local Computer Policy in the editor’s left pane; it is not a separate app to install or a Settings page.
