Split a React component when a child boundary gives a piece of UI or behavior a clear purpose, improves the parent’s readability, supports reuse, or puts state with the code that owns it. Don’t split by line count: React sets no universal maximum component size, and a component can be useful for organizing UI even when it appears only once.

What makes a component worth extracting?

A component is a useful boundary when it represents a recognizable part of the interface or a coherent responsibility. For example, a page might be easier to understand when its navigation, product summary, or repeated list item is rendered by a named child rather than being mixed into the page’s main markup. React describes building interfaces by composing and nesting components, and notes that a component may help organize UI even if it is used in only one place (React: Your First Component).

  • It is repeated: A named component keeps repeated items consistent and avoids duplicating their markup.
  • It has a coherent responsibility: A distinct section or interaction can be understood without reading the entire parent.
  • It makes the parent easier to follow: Extracting a section can make the parent’s main flow and purpose more apparent.
  • It owns local behavior or state: A value used only by that piece of UI may belong with it.

These are design signals, not rules based on a particular number of lines, hooks, or JSX elements.

How small should a React component be?

Small enough to have a clear purpose; not so small that its name, props, and extra layer of indirection make the code harder to follow. There is no universal size threshold in the cited React guidance. A long component can still describe one cohesive interaction, while a shorter component may contain an obvious reusable or independently understandable unit.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Also separate the question of component boundaries from file organization. Related small components can live in the same file; extracting a component does not require creating a new file. Keep code together when its markup, state, and behavior are tightly connected and splitting it would produce a wrapper with no useful name or responsibility (React: Your First Component).

Where should state live after a split?

Put each unique state value with the component that needs to own it. State used by just one child can usually remain there. If sibling components need to stay synchronized, move the shared value to their closest common parent and pass each child the value and an event handler. React calls this lifting state up; it gives the coordinated value one owner (React: Sharing State Between Components).

For example, if an accordion must allow only one panel to be open at a time, the active panel selection belongs in a shared parent rather than separately in each panel. The parent can pass each panel whether it is open and a handler for changing the selection.

Props and callbacks are the ordinary way to pass data and actions to nearby children. If a value would otherwise pass through many intermediate components that do not use it, React documents context as an option for making information available deeper in the tree. A component split alone is not a reason to add context (React: Managing State).

How do effects and component boundaries interact?

Keep rendering pure: React says side effects must run outside render (React: Rules of React). Put work caused by a specific user action in an event handler. Use an Effect to synchronize with an external system, such as a connection or third-party system (React: Synchronizing with Effects).

If an extracted child owns an Effect, check that the setup, dependencies, and cleanup still match the child’s lifecycle. Consider what should happen when the child appears or disappears, or when its inputs change. The boundary should preserve the intended synchronization behavior rather than merely relocating code.

When should you keep the component intact?

  • The markup, state, and behavior form one tightly connected interaction.
  • The proposed child would have no clear responsibility or useful name.
  • Extraction would add awkward prop forwarding or make the data flow less clear.
  • The parent is already easy to understand, and the split offers no meaningful reuse, organization, or state-ownership benefit.

When you do extract a child, declare its component function at module scope rather than inside the parent. React’s first-component guidance warns that nested component definitions can be slow and cause bugs. Pass the data the child needs through props (React: Your First Component).

A practical checklist for a proposed split

  • Responsibility: Can you describe each resulting component’s purpose clearly?
  • Reuse: Is this UI repeated now, or is composition in more than one place a real need?
  • State ownership: Does state remain local, or must a common parent coordinate it?
  • Data-flow cost: Are the props and callbacks understandable, or does the split add awkward forwarding?
  • Parent readability: Does the extraction make the parent’s primary job easier to see?
  • Lifecycle: If the subtree has Effects, does moving it preserve the intended setup, synchronization, and cleanup?

This checklist applies React’s guidance on composition, state, and Effects as practical design criteria; it is not an official scoring system.
