Microsoft BackOffice Server 2000 was a packaged suite built on Windows 2000 Server, not a single server application. It bundled selected Microsoft server products with deployment and administration tools; it did not include every product in Microsoft’s broader BackOffice family.
What is BackOffice Server 2000?
BackOffice Server 2000 was Microsoft’s bundled offering of Windows 2000 Server and selected server applications, plus tools intended to help deploy and manage them. A contemporary overview described it as a package of several—but not all—server-class applications alongside Windows 2000 Server (IT Pro Today, January 2001).
“BackOffice” also named Microsoft’s wider server-product family. In a 1996 announcement, Microsoft distinguished the family from BackOffice Server, describing the latter as a package containing a subset of the family’s applications. The suite should therefore not be confused with every product carrying the BackOffice name.
What components are included in BackOffice Server 2000?

What did the main server products do?
Windows 2000 Server
Windows 2000 Server was the operating-system foundation of the bundle. The other listed products were separate server applications or management and deployment utilities packaged around that base.
Exchange 2000 Server and Outlook 2000
Microsoft’s 2000 annual report describes Exchange 2000 Server as a messaging and collaboration server. Outlook 2000 SR-1 appears in the reported bundle inventory as a client application associated with that environment; the report does not establish that the exact BackOffice package included it (Microsoft 2000 annual report).

SQL Server 2000
The annual report describes SQL Server 2000 as a database and analysis server, and highlights web and XML support and data mining. In the suite, it supplied database and data-analysis capabilities alongside the Windows server platform (Microsoft 2000 annual report).
Host Integration Server and Systems Management Server
Host Integration Server connected Windows environments with other systems, while Systems Management Server provided systems-management capabilities. Those broad roles are useful context, but the sources available for these specific 2000 editions do not establish a detailed feature list.

Deployment and management tools
The reported inventory also includes a deployment wizard, management consoles, and to-do lists. These were utilities for setting up and administering the bundled environment, not additional server applications.
How did the bundle differ from BackOffice Server 4.5?
The contemporary overview separately reports additions and omissions relative to BackOffice Server 4.5. It lists ISA Server 2000, multi-server deployment and its wizard, an Internet Connection Wizard, remote administration with Terminal Services, Health Monitor 2.1, server-status reports and a status view, and shared fax and modem services as added functions or extras. It also says Site Server and some developer and reporting tools from the older version were absent (IT Pro Today, January 2001).

These version-to-version notes are distinct from the main component inventory: they describe reported changes and capabilities, not a second complete list of everything in the 2000 package.

No. Windows 2000 Server was the operating-system base; BackOffice Server 2000 was the broader bundle of that base, selected Microsoft server applications, and accompanying tools. Microsoft documentation also refers to a BackOffice suite flag indicating that BackOffice components are installed, but that operating-system flag is not a manifest of the contents of this particular bundle (Microsoft Windows Management Instrumentation protocol documentation).

Is BackOffice Server 2000 still supported or suitable for a new server?
It is a legacy product, relevant today mainly for understanding historical Microsoft server packaging or identifying software in archival and maintenance contexts. A Microsoft protocol appendix still names BackOffice Server 2000 among products to which its specification applies; that reference establishes the product’s historical identity, not current support status (Microsoft protocol appendix).
The sources cited here do not establish an authoritative suite-wide end-of-support date, so no specific date should be inferred. The historical package description is not a reason to install it as a new production server.
