What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Stop adding speculative fixes. Reproduce the failure, narrow it to the smallest relevant part of the code, and make one change you can verify. Treat an AI assistant’s explanation or suggested fix as a hypothesis—not proof. If the implementation is harder to understand and maintain than a clearer rewrite, simplifying it is a valid solution.
Start by freezing the current state
Before editing, save a recoverable version in version control or an editor checkpoint. Record three things: what you observed, what you expected, and the steps that reproduce the problem. For a complex change across multiple files, plan the work and review that plan before asking an assistant to implement it.
An editor checkpoint can help restore file edits, but it is not a universal rollback: it may not undo commands that have already run or changes made to external services. Keep those effects in mind when choosing how to recover.
Establish what is failing
Compile the project and run the relevant automated tests before changing code. Record the first compiler error, failing test, warning, or unexpected output, then focus on that failure rather than trying to fix several symptoms at once. Compilation, tests, and static analysis provide early feedback; they do not establish by themselves that a change solves the intended problem.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the failing test in place. If there is no test for the behavior, create a small test or repeatable reproduction before attempting a fix. This gives you a way to tell whether a change helped or merely shifted the failure.
Trace the failure to its smallest relevant part
Follow the execution path into the function or module where the behavior first diverges from what you expect. Compare actual inputs, outputs, exceptions, and runtime values with the intended behavior. When a text inspection is not enough, use a debugger to examine the call stack, frames, and variables; a conditional breakpoint can help stop execution when a particular value or condition occurs.
Write down a specific, testable explanation for the failure. For example: “This branch receives an empty list, but the caller expects at least one item.” A hypothesis that identifies a value, condition, or boundary is easier to test than “the generated code is broken.”

Use AI for a bounded explanation or proposal
Give the assistant only the relevant function or excerpt, the error or failing test, the expected behavior, and the observed behavior. Ask it to explain the control flow, identify assumptions, list plausible causes, or suggest one minimal test. Once you have a testable cause, you can ask for a narrowly scoped candidate fix.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not treat plausible-sounding output as authoritative. AI-generated code can misunderstand intent, contain syntactic or semantic errors, use APIs that do not exist, or overlook edge cases. Suggested fixes may be incomplete or suboptimal, and generated tests may omit important scenarios. Check the explanation against the code and runtime evidence before changing anything.
Make one small change and test it
- Change only the relevant unit or branch. Keep the edit small enough to review and to connect directly to your hypothesis.
- Run the focused test or reproduction. Confirm that the original failure is fixed, not just hidden or moved elsewhere.
- Add boundary and failure cases. Check inputs and conditions likely to expose the same bug. Review AI-suggested tests manually; their presence does not prove adequate coverage.
- Run the wider suite and static analysis. Look for regressions and new warnings after the focused check passes.
Do not delete or skip a failing test to make the suite green. If the expected behavior or test itself is wrong, establish that deliberately and update it to match a verified requirement.

Review the change before accepting it
Inspect the actual diff, not just the assistant’s summary. Confirm that the change implements the intended behavior, fits the project’s architecture, and remains readable. Check that it has not removed tests, bypassed constraints, or introduced unhandled cases.
If the fix adds a dependency, verify that the package exists, is maintained, comes from an acceptable source, and has a license compatible with the project. Review security-sensitive code particularly carefully, including assumptions about input, permissions, and data handling. Run the project’s available security checks as well as its tests.
When debugger-aware AI assistance helps
Ordinary chat assistance works from the context you provide. In Visual Studio, Microsoft documents Copilot assistance that can use debugger information such as call stacks, frames, variable names, and values. Its documented Debugger Agent workflow covers reproducing an issue, instrumenting the application, isolating a cause, and validating a correction through live execution, followed by human validation. Microsoft lists Visual Studio 2022 version 17.8 or later and Copilot access as prerequisites; feature availability and plan requirements may change. See Microsoft’s Visual Studio debugging documentation for details.

Debugger context can make an explanation more grounded in the current execution, but it does not transfer responsibility for validating the fix. Whether you use an IDE assistant or debug manually, the useful checks are the same: reproduce the failure, inspect the evidence, review the proposed change, rerun tests, and confirm behavior in the running program.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose repair, simplification, or rewrite
Prefer the smallest repair that restores the intended behavior and remains understandable. A rewrite is not automatically safer: replacing a large implementation can introduce regressions and make it harder to isolate what changed. Compare the choices by whether the failure is reproducible, how much code must change, whether the result is testable, and whether the next person can maintain it.
Simplify or replace the implementation when continued patching obscures the cause, leaves the code opaque or sprawling, or costs more to understand than a clearer design would. Break the work into smaller, testable units and preserve the reproduction or tests that demonstrate the required behavior.

Use checkpoints and review as part of the workflow
In VS Code, the official best-practices guidance recommends planning complex multi-file work, reviewing code before integration, running tests, checking for security issues, and using checkpoints to rewind file edits. A checkpoint is useful for file changes, but it does not undo completed commands or external-service changes. See VS Code’s AI best-practices guidance.
For consequential or sensitive changes, ask a teammate to review the diff and reasoning. Independent review is especially useful when the generated code is difficult for its author to explain.
