It hosts websites, web services, and applications. Although the title phrase “Internet Information Server” is commonly used to ask about IIS, Microsoft’s official name is Internet Information Services.
What IIS is—and what it is not
IIS is server software, not a computer, operating system, or programming language. A website’s files or application are hosted through an IIS site and application configuration. IIS receives requests and processes them using Windows components and the server features installed and configured for that workload. Microsoft’s IIS overview describes its role as a web-server platform.
What IIS is used for
IIS can host different kinds of web and network workloads. Microsoft’s documented examples include:
- Static websites
- Classic ASP and ASP.NET websites
- ASP.NET Core applications on Windows
- FTP sites
- Web farms
These are supported scenarios, not features guaranteed to be present in every installation. Available functionality depends on the Windows and IIS versions and on which components are installed. Microsoft’s IIS hosting scenarios describe common configurations. For ASP.NET Core, Microsoft documents IIS as a Windows hosting option, including for on-premises or hybrid Windows Server deployments; see its ASP.NET Core on IIS guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How IIS handles requests
IIS relies on Windows components to receive and manage requests. HTTP.sys handles HTTP traffic, while the World Wide Web Publishing Service participates in managing web services. The Windows Process Activation Service (WAS) supports application activation; its protocol-independent capabilities can enable supported sites and services to use protocols beyond HTTP and HTTPS. The precise path depends on the protocol and configuration. Microsoft explains these roles in its IIS architecture overview.
What application pools do
IIS application pools group worker processes and provide process boundaries between groups of hosted applications. An administrator can place applications in separate pools so a problem in one pool is less likely to directly affect applications in another. This is useful operational isolation, but it is not a complete security boundary and does not prevent every failure. Microsoft’s application pool documentation covers their configuration and behavior.

Why IIS is modular
IIS is made up of components that administrators can add, remove, or replace to match the server’s workload. Installing only the features a site needs can reduce unused code and the server’s exposed surface area. Modularity alone, however, does not make a server secure; security also depends on configuration, maintenance, and the application being hosted. Microsoft outlines the platform’s component model in its IIS web server overview.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When IIS may be a fit
IIS is relevant when a workload needs a Windows web-server environment, such as hosting an application built for IIS or integrating with Windows-based administration and services. When choosing a web server, compare the deployment operating system, application and runtime compatibility, Windows integration or authentication needs, administration model, available modules, and operational and security requirements. These factors matter more than a blanket claim that one server is faster, safer, or easier than another.
