Some AI browser features only summarize pages or use information from multiple tabs; more agentic tools can navigate websites, click controls, fill forms, or carry out multi-step tasks. The name alone does not tell you what a product can access or do, so evaluate its permissions and action controls before using it for anything consequential.
What counts as an AI browser?
“AI browser” is a broad label, not a fixed technical category. It can describe an established browser with an AI assistant, a browser organized around an AI agent, or a feature that lets AI work with page content. The useful distinction is what the system is allowed to do.
AI-assisted browsing: reads and answers
An assistant may summarize the current page, answer questions about it, or use context from several open tabs. For example, Google’s September 18, 2025 Chrome announcement described Gemini in Chrome answering questions using activity across multiple tabs. That is AI-assisted browsing even when the user, rather than the AI, performs the navigation and clicks.
Agentic browsing: takes actions
An agentic browser can act through the browser interface: visiting sites, clicking controls, entering information, or completing steps in a workflow. Brave’s AI Browsing documentation describes examples such as researching across sites, comparing products, filling shopping carts, and handling multi-step workflows. These are more consequential capabilities than summarization because they can change account or transaction state.

Some products put an AI agent at the center of the browsing experience; others add an assistant or agent to a familiar browser. That implementation difference is not, by itself, a safety ranking. Ask whether a feature reads, navigates, clicks, submits, or purchases, rather than assuming every product with an AI label has the same autonomy.
Examples—and why availability needs a date
Browser AI features change quickly. Announcements and help pages describe particular versions, platforms, regions, languages, or experimental rollouts; they should not be read as a promise that a feature is available everywhere now.
| Product or feature | What the cited material described | Availability qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Chrome with Gemini | Google’s September 18, 2025 announcement described using multiple-tab context to answer questions. It also said more advanced agentic capabilities were under development at that time. | The announcement initially described rollout to Mac and Windows users in the United States with English language settings. Current Chrome Help describes auto browse as experimental; check the current help page for eligibility and controls. |
| Microsoft Edge Actions | Microsoft’s October 23, 2025 post described an opt-in experimental preview using computer-using-agent models, with site restrictions and approval controls. | Those are statements about the preview at publication, not a guarantee of present-day availability. |
| Brave AI Browsing | Brave’s help page describes research across sites, product comparisons, shopping-cart actions, fact-checking, and multi-step workflows. | The page, updated December 10, 2025, described an experimental feature in Brave Nightly for desktop, with no Leo Premium subscription required for testing. Check Brave’s current documentation because version and platform support can change. |
A 2026 ICLR workshop paper evaluated Brave Leo AI, ChatGPT Atlas, Chrome with Gemini, Claude for Chrome, Microsoft Edge with Copilot, Firefox AI Mode, and Perplexity Comet. That is a dated study sample, not a current list of products or a statement that all are presently available in the same form.

What can an AI browser do—and what should you check?
Capabilities vary by product and may vary by feature setting. Before enabling or delegating a task, check these boundaries in the relevant product’s current documentation and settings:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Autonomy: Can it only explain page content, or can it navigate, click, submit forms, shop, and complete workflows?
- Scope: Does it see only the current page, other tabs, embedded cross-origin frames, connected apps, or signed-in sessions?
- Approval and takeover: Which steps pause for your approval or require you to take control, especially purchases, messages, account changes, and sensitive data access?
- Site restrictions and isolation: Can you constrain it to task-relevant or approved sites? Is its access to untrusted page content limited?
- Data handling: What page content, browsing state, or personal information is processed or shared, and what controls can you change?
- Maturity: Is the feature stable or experimental, and is it limited by region, language, platform, or account?
Risks: why web content can misdirect an agent
Prompt injection in pages and embedded content
A page, email, document, iframe, or user-generated review can contain instructions aimed at an AI rather than a human reader. If an agent treats those instructions as authoritative, they may redirect it away from the user’s request. Google’s Chrome Security post of December 8, 2025 identifies indirect prompt injection as a primary new threat for agentic browsers and discusses malicious sites, third-party iframe content, and user reviews as examples. Microsoft also warns that prompt injection can lead to data theft or unintended transactions without protections.
A 2026 ICLR workshop study tested seven agentic browsers and reported a successful cross-origin data-theft attack on ChatGPT Atlas in Agent Mode in its test environment. It also said preconditions for a similar attack, if prompt injection succeeds, were present in tests of Chrome with Gemini, Claude for Chrome, and Perplexity Comet. These findings describe tested conditions, not proof that every user or version is exploitable. The paper notes that browser behavior and model guardrails can be difficult to distinguish, and products may change after the study.

Signed-in browsing and personal information
An agent may encounter pages where you are logged in, not just public text. Google’s Chrome Help warns that Gemini in Chrome auto browse can access sites you are signed into and may use personal information from connected apps or share information with a site. Check the feature’s data controls and the task’s scope before allowing it to interact with accounts or personal data.
Wrong clicks and unintended outcomes
An agent can misunderstand your request or a page, choose the wrong control, add or buy the wrong item, or report that a task is complete when it is not. Google’s Chrome Help explicitly describes these possible outcomes and says users remain responsible for agent actions during a task. Keep consequential work under active supervision and verify the final state yourself.

How to use an AI browser more safely
- Choose the least capable mode that will do the job. If you only need a summary, use a read-and-answer feature rather than granting an agent permission to click or submit.
- Limit the task and its access. Specify the sites and outcome you want, and avoid broad instructions that leave the agent to decide what accounts or actions are relevant.
- Review approval prompts. Read what the agent proposes to share or change before confirming. Do not approve a transaction, message, or account change you have not checked.
- Monitor the run. Stay present while the browser agent works, particularly on signed-in sites. Use takeover or stop controls if it strays from the task.
- Verify independently. Check the actual page, order, message, or account state after the agent says it has finished.
- Recheck settings after updates. Feature availability and controls can change; consult the current official documentation for your browser, region, language, and platform.
When an AI browser is useful—and when to wait
Page question-answering can be useful when you need a quick explanation or want to compare information already open in several tabs. Agentic browsing can reduce repetitive navigation, but it also introduces the possibility of unintended actions and exposure to untrusted instructions. For purchases, sensitive account work, or messages, use an agent only if you can see what it is doing, control what it can access, and approve consequential steps. If those boundaries are unclear, do the task manually.
The cited product and security sources do not establish a general AI-browser market-size or adoption figure. A Chrome announcement’s separate figure of about 3 billion fewer scammy and spammy website notifications a day refers to AI-powered warnings for Chrome users on Android, not to AI-browser usage or market size.
