Eligible domain-joined Windows clients with a matching Generic Volume License Key (GVLK) can activate by contacting the domain; this route does not use KMS’s client-count threshold. It requires eligible volume licensing, a configured and matching activation object, and access to the domain. Microsoft says ADBA-activated clients stay activated for up to 180 days after their last contact with the domain.
How ADBA activation works
An administrator creates an activation object in the AD DS forest using an eligible volume-license host key, also called a CSVLK. A client configured with a GVLK checks its licensing state and, when activation is needed, queries AD DS. If the object matches the installed product edition and key, the client activates. It periodically needs to contact the domain again to maintain activation.
Microsoft describes the validity interval as “up to 180 days since the last contact with the domain.” That is not an unconditional offline grace period: renewal depends on the client being able to contact the domain and on its licensing configuration. See Microsoft’s Activate using Active Directory-based activation guidance.
What ADBA requires
- Eligible volume licensing and keys: the organization needs the appropriate licensing entitlement. The CSVLK is used to create the forest activation object; eligible client products use GVLKs. A retail or OEM key should not be assumed to be an ADBA client key.
- A supported product and matching object: the installed edition and GVLK must correspond to an activation object in the forest.
- Domain membership and access: clients need to be joined to the relevant AD DS domain and able to contact it for activation and renewal.
- Forest preparation: Microsoft’s client activation guidance says ADBA requires updating the forest schema with
adprep.exeon a supported server operating system. Schema, server, and client compatibility depend on product versions, so check the current Microsoft requirements for the specific environment.
Microsoft also supports ADBA for volume-licensed Office, Project, and Visio editions, subject to product-specific requirements. Office key activation requires the appropriate GVLK and version-specific Office Volume License Pack on the server hosting the Volume Activation Services role. Microsoft identifies Domain Administrator and Enterprise Administrator credentials for configuration. See Activate volume-licensed versions of Office by using Active Directory.

ADBA vs. KMS vs. MAK
| Method | Activation source | Best fit | Important operational detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| ADBA | An activation object in AD DS | Eligible domain-joined clients that can reach the domain | No KMS client-count threshold for the ADBA route; domain contact is needed to renew within the up-to-180-day validity interval. |
| KMS | A KMS host discovered through DNS or configured directly | Clients that can reach a KMS host, including when AD activation is unavailable | Microsoft’s current KMS guidance gives thresholds of 25 Windows client computers or 5 Windows Server computers. These are KMS thresholds, not ADBA requirements; KMS also relies on host reachability and periodic renewal. |
| MAK | Microsoft activation services | Individually activated or limited-device deployments, as allowed by the organization’s licensing | Activation uses Microsoft services rather than an AD activation object or KMS host. Follow current MAK guidance for the product and entitlement. |
Microsoft’s client activation sequence checks AD DS when activation or reactivation is needed. If the client is not domain-joined or the activation object is unavailable, it can try DNS-based KMS discovery; a client configured with a MAK can use Microsoft activation services. The actual route depends on the installed key and which activation services are available. For Microsoft’s comparison and KMS figures, see Activate clients running Windows.

- Confirm entitlement and keys. Verify that the organization has the required volume-license entitlement, that target products are eligible, and that authorized CSVLK and client GVLKs are available.
- Check forest and product prerequisites. Confirm schema and operating-system requirements for the actual AD DS environment, along with the supported client editions and keys.
- Install the activation tools. Install the Volume Activation Services role and use Volume Activation Tools. VAMT is a management option included with the Windows ADK; Microsoft recommends using it while logged on as a domain administrator for best ADBA results.
- Create the forest activation object. Add and activate the CSVLK, then create the object in AD DS. Microsoft’s online VAMT method requires Internet access from the management host and administrative permissions to AD. Microsoft documents a separate proxy-activation process for isolated environments.
- Configure and verify clients. Deploy eligible clients with matching GVLKs, join them to the domain, and check licensing status on representative devices. Some Windows enterprise media may already include a GVLK, but verify the installed edition and key instead of assuming it is a volume-activation client.
For the forest activation procedures, including online and proxy routes, use Microsoft’s Activate Active Directory-based activation guidance. VAMT installation details are in Install VAMT.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Check edition and key. Confirm the Windows edition is eligible and the installed key is the appropriate GVLK. A product using a retail or OEM key may not be configured for ADBA.
- Check domain access. Verify that the computer is joined to the intended domain and can contact a domain controller. A remote or disconnected client may be unable to query or renew through ADBA.
- Check the forest object. Confirm that the activation object exists and matches the installed product edition and GVLK.
- Inspect licensing state and logs. Use
slmgr.vbsto review licensing details and inspect relevant Event Viewer logs. Correlate the result with the exact Windows version, installed key, and activation object. - Investigate another activation route only if applicable. If the client falls through to KMS, check DNS discovery or configured host reachability using KMS guidance. Do not use KMS thresholds as an explanation for an ADBA object mismatch.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends licensing tools and event logs. Its ADBA-specific example concerns a Windows Server 2016 migration, so use it as a diagnostic example rather than a universal statement of current compatibility.
