Ericsson Security Manager (ESM) is enterprise cybersecurity software for communication service providers and mission-critical operators. It helps teams manage network security through asset visibility, policy enforcement, configuration-change detection, monitoring, compliance and certificate workflows, and security logs. Ericsson positions it for the telecom threat environment, but its published feature descriptions do not establish a quantified reduction in attacks or breaches.

What is Ericsson Security Manager?

ESM is a security-operations platform for telecom networks, not consumer antivirus software, a home-router feature, or a standalone security appliance. Ericsson describes it as working across the mobile-network stack and integrating with Ericsson products, while also supporting multivendor orchestration and network-asset discovery.

Its central purpose is to give operators a way to see and manage security conditions across network assets and automate repeatable operational work. That makes it relevant to organizations running complex mobile infrastructure, rather than individual users looking to secure a phone or laptop.

How does ESM protect a network?

Ericsson’s operations descriptions focus on maintaining security controls and helping teams spot and respond to problems. The platform’s documented functions include:

  • Detecting baseline configuration misconfigurations through automated policy enforcement.
  • Detecting unwanted changes to network configurations.
  • Orchestrating compliance and certificate-related processes.
  • Automating network configuration and maintenance tasks.
  • Supporting security monitoring and early detection.
  • Collecting security history and logs for operational review.

These capabilities can help operators apply security policies consistently and investigate changes or events. They should not be read as a guarantee that ESM will block every attack: the public descriptions explain capabilities and workflows, not a measured prevention rate or independently validated security outcome.

Which telecom threats does it address?

Ericsson frames ESM against threats that are specific to mobile-network infrastructure, including advanced persistent threats (APTs) targeting telecom operators, denial-of-service and distributed denial-of-service attacks affecting radio access networks (RAN), jamming, and false base stations. A false base station imitates a legitimate cell tower and can be used to intercept or eavesdrop on communications.

That threat context helps explain why ESM is aimed at telecom security operations rather than general-purpose endpoint protection. However, Ericsson’s public descriptions do not detail a separate detection method or guaranteed response for each named attack type. Operators should assess the specific telemetry, integrations, controls, and incident workflows available in a proposed deployment.

Does ESM cover IoT as well as telecom networks?

Ericsson has described Security Manager in both telecom-provider and IoT contexts. In a March 25, 2020 EE Times interview, Ericsson’s head of IoT security characterized its coverage in terms of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework’s protect, detect, and respond functions. The interview also reported that ESM was then in live operation with Swisscom to protect its telecom network. That is evidence of a deployment reported in 2020, not confirmation of Swisscom’s current use or a statement that every IoT environment is supported.

For an IoT deployment, the practical question is whether the platform can integrate with the particular devices, network domains, and security systems involved. The available descriptions support an IoT context, but do not specify supported device types, deployment requirements, or coverage for every IoT architecture.

What should an operator verify before choosing it?

ESM’s described strengths are visibility and automation. A procurement or implementation review should establish how those functions map to the operator’s own estate and responsibilities:

  • Network coverage: Confirm which RAN, core, transport, and cloud assets are in scope for the intended deployment.
  • Integration: Validate support for the operator’s Ericsson and third-party systems, and what asset discovery and multivendor orchestration actually include.
  • Controls and workflows: Determine which policies can be enforced, which configuration changes are detected, and how alerts connect to investigation and response.
  • Compliance and certificates: Clarify the standards, certificate lifecycle tasks, ownership, and approval steps covered.
  • Operational evidence: Ask for deployment-specific evidence, service responsibilities, and success measures rather than assuming that a listed capability produces a particular security result.

Ericsson’s public feature descriptions do not provide an independent breach-reduction percentage, uptime improvement, or return-on-investment figure. Those outcomes therefore need to be evaluated for the specific operator and implementation.

How long has Ericsson Security Manager been available?

Ericsson announced Security Manager on February 10, 2017. That launch description emphasized policy-based security management, continuous monitoring of threats, vulnerabilities, risks, and compliance, automated remediation, and real-time security analytics across physical and virtual network environments. Current Ericsson product descriptions present ESM as a 5G security-operations platform, with emphasis on configuration control, monitoring, compliance, and automation.
