In Windows, identifying a “drive” usually means working out which volume a path reaches—not identifying a physical disk. A drive letter such as C: is a convenient access path, but it can change and is not a permanent identity for the hardware.
What does drive identification mean in Windows?
Windows presents storage through paths that people and programs can use. The path may be a drive root such as C:, a folder mounted on another volume, or a volume GUID path such as \?Volume{GUID}. These paths help identify or access a volume; they do not, by themselves, prove which physical disk contains it.
Microsoft’s Naming a Volume documentation states, “A volume can have a label, a drive letter, both, or neither.” A volume therefore does not have to appear as a letter in File Explorer to exist or be accessible.
Is a drive letter the same as a physical drive?
No. A physical disk is a hardware device; a partition is a division of storage on a disk; and a volume is a logical storage unit Windows can use to store files. A volume commonly corresponds to a formatted partition, but everyday Windows usage often calls the volume or its path a “drive.” A physical disk may contain multiple partitions or volumes, and the drive letter refers to an access path rather than the disk itself. Microsoft’s basic and dynamic disks documentation describes the distinction between disks and volumes.

What can identify or access a Windows volume?

How do I identify which volume a path refers to?
Use Disk Management to inspect volumes
Disk Management shows volumes and their drive letters or mounted paths, where assigned. In Windows 10 and Windows 11, right-click Start and select Disk Management, or search for “Create and format hard disk partitions.” Review the volume list and disk layout together: the volume’s letter or label helps locate it, while the disk and partition layout provides context about where it resides. Do not assume a label or letter alone uniquely identifies the hardware.
Use mountvol to view mount information
Microsoft documents mountvol for listing, creating, and removing volume mount points on Windows 10 and Windows 11, as well as specified Windows Server versions. Open Command Prompt and run:

mountvolTo ask for the volume name associated with a particular mounted folder, use:
mountvol C: /lReplace C: with the folder path you want to check. The /l option lists the volume name associated with that path; it does not establish the identity of the underlying physical disk. See Microsoft’s mountvol command reference.

Use Windows APIs when building software
For programmatic inspection, Microsoft documents FindFirstVolume and FindNextVolume to enumerate volumes, GetLogicalDriveStrings to retrieve available drive roots, GetDriveType to check drive type, GetVolumeNameForVolumeMountPoint to retrieve a volume GUID path, and GetVolumeInformation for volume and file-system information. These functions answer different questions; a drive root, volume name, and drive type are not interchangeable identifiers. Can I change a drive letter?
Yes, when the volume is eligible and you have administrative permissions. In Disk Management, right-click the volume, choose Change Drive Letter and Paths, then choose Change to replace an existing letter or Add to assign one. Microsoft cautions that changing the letter of a volume containing Windows or applications can cause programs to have trouble because they may rely on existing paths. Consult the Disk Management instructions for changing a drive letter before making the change.
