The timeline is the control center of a video project: it places picture, dialogue, music, effects, transitions, and timed text on a shared clock. Edit the picture first with trim, cut, and move operations; balance sound with the editor’s audio tools; then create and time captions after the cut is stable. Finally, deliver subtitles as burned-in text, an embedded track, or a sidecar file according to the receiving platform’s specification.
What a video-editing timeline does
A timeline arranges clips in chronological order and gives you a position from which to review the sequence. Video clips occupy video tracks; dialogue, music, ambience, and effects occupy audio tracks; transitions and effects modify clips or edits between them. The playhead is the location marker for playback and inspection. It is not the same thing as a clip boundary: moving the playhead changes where you are viewing, while dragging a clip edge changes the clip’s duration.
In Premiere, timeline decisions are non-destructive. Adobe Help describes it this way: “Editing on the timeline is non-destructive: you can trim, cut, copy, and move clips without altering the original media.” Your source media remains available in the Project panel, while the project stores edit decisions. Export then encodes a new file from those decisions. Other applications can use different media-management models, so confirm behavior in the documentation for the editor you use.
Core timeline operations
Trim a clip
Select a clip and drag its left or right edge to change the in or out point. Trimming reveals less or more of the existing source; it does not create new footage. Watch the neighboring clip while trimming so you do not introduce an unintended gap or overwrite an important moment.

Cut a clip
Place the playhead at the intended edit point and use the Razor tool (called the equivalent of a split or blade tool in some editors). The single clip becomes separate segments that can be moved, shortened, deleted, or given different effects.
Reposition a clip
Select and drag a clip to another time or track. Keep linked picture and production audio together unless you intentionally need to replace or retime one of them. Turn on snapping when you want edges to align with the playhead or neighboring edits; turn it off for fine adjustments.
Review the sequence
Move the playhead, play around every cut, and watch the Program monitor (or your editor’s equivalent). Review handles before and after each edit, then inspect the entire sequence for continuity. A timeline can look tidy while a cut still feels early, late, abrupt, or incorrectly matched.
A practical editing order
- Organize. Label or bin source clips and identify dialogue, music, ambience, and effects before assembling.
- Assemble. Place the best takes in story order, leaving temporary gaps or placeholders where decisions are not final.
- Refine picture. Trim edges, cut unwanted material, reposition shots, and adjust transitions.
- Lock the edit. Make a review pass for timing, continuity, graphics, and visual effects. Keep changes after this point deliberate because timed text depends on the final duration of each shot.
- Work on sound. Balance and process audio in the editor’s dedicated controls while watching the picture.
- Create and check captions. Generate or import timed text, correct wording, style it, and verify synchronization.
- Deliver the required format. Choose burned-in text, an embedded subtitle track, or a sidecar file only after checking the destination’s specification.
Audio controls in the timeline
Picture and sound share project time, but audio balancing and processing require audio-specific controls. Premiere identifies Essential Sound as its audio-editing panel. DaVinci Resolve describes a broader Fairlight toolset and plug-ins on its Edit page. These are examples of editor-specific workflows, not interchangeable labels.

Keep sound understandable
- Keep dialogue, music, ambience, and effects on identifiable tracks or buses so you can adjust them independently.
- Listen in context with the picture. A level that seems acceptable in isolation may mask speech when music or effects enter.
- Use the chosen editor’s clip, track, and bus controls for level changes, equalization, dynamics, noise treatment, and automation.
- Check the exported file, not just the timeline. Export settings, channel mapping, and codec choices can change what the audience hears.
The documented workflows do not establish one universal loudness target for every platform or delivery. Use the target service, broadcaster, or client specification rather than inventing a number that may not apply.
Captions and subtitles: what to add and when
Caption and subtitle terminology is not universal across software and delivery services. Treat timed text as segments associated with sequence time, then follow the receiving platform’s specification for language, accessibility, styling, and file format. “Subtitles” may mean translated dialogue; “captions” may include dialogue plus relevant sound information, but you should verify the destination’s definition instead of assuming the terms are interchangeable.
Why timing follows the picture edit
Adobe advises adding captions when the edit is finished or close to finished. If you delete or substantially shorten a segment after captions are created, text may need to be recreated manually. A locked or near-locked picture prevents avoidable retiming work.
Premiere transcript-to-caption workflow
- Transcribe the edited sequence with Premiere’s transcription tools.
- Correct names, punctuation, and words in the transcript.
- Create captions from the corrected transcript. Premiere places caption segments on a separate timeline track.
- Use timeline editing tools to move, trim, and split caption segments so they match speech and scene changes.
- Adjust the caption track’s style where required, then review the complete program with captions enabled.
- Export as burned-in captions, an SRT sidecar, or an embedded caption track when the chosen container and delivery path support it.
Burned-in captions become part of the pixels and appear everywhere, but viewers cannot turn them off. An SRT sidecar keeps text separate and is convenient when a platform accepts external subtitle files. Embedding keeps text in the media container, but compatibility depends on the exact container, codec, and destination.

Resolve subtitle workflow
DaVinci Resolve’s Edit page supports timed-text imports including TTML, SRT, and XML, as well as embedded MXF/IMF subtitles. Subtitle entries appear above video tracks and can be moved and trimmed like media. The Inspector can adjust font, color, size, position, and other track styles. Resolve can render subtitles into the final video or export separate TTML, SRT, or VTT files. You can switch subtitle tracks for different languages and add multiple captions per track.
Choosing a delivery method
| Method | What the audience receives | When it fits | Check before delivery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burned in | Text permanently rendered into the picture | Destinations that do not accept subtitle tracks, or a design that must appear identically everywhere | Safe areas, legibility, line breaks, and whether text can be turned off |
| Sidecar | A separate text file such as SRT, TTML, or VTT | Platforms or review systems that ingest a subtitle file beside the video | Exact extension, language metadata, encoding, and matching timebase |
| Embedded | A subtitle or caption track inside a supported media container | Workflows that require one media file with selectable text | Container support, track format, language tags, and the receiver’s parser |
Resolve documents TTML, SRT, or VTT outputs and embedded MXF/IMF inputs; Premiere documents burned-in, SRT sidecar, and QuickTime/MXF embedding options. Do not assume that a file accepted by one platform is interchangeable with another without checking its delivery specification.
Quality-control checklist
- Play from the beginning and check every cut, transition, and graphic.
- Watch at normal speed and inspect difficult edits frame by frame.
- Listen for clipped, missing, phase-inverted, or unexpectedly quiet audio.
- Verify that dialogue remains intelligible when music and effects are present.
- Read every caption for spelling, names, punctuation, line breaks, and timing.
- Check that caption in and out points do not precede the spoken words or linger after the relevant speech.
- Test the actual exported file and, for sidecars or embedded tracks, test the file in the intended playback or upload system.
Common problems and fixes
Captions drift after an edit
Cause: clips were shortened, removed, or inserted after text was timed. Fix: return to the near-final picture, regenerate or retime affected segments, and recheck the complete program.
A cut changes the wrong track
Cause: track targeting, linking, or selection states differ from what you intended. Fix: select the intended tracks, confirm linked clips, and make a short test cut before applying the operation throughout the sequence.

Text appears twice
Cause: a burned-in version is being viewed together with an enabled sidecar or embedded track. Fix: deliver only the method required by the destination and disable duplicate tracks during playback tests.
Subtitle styling is missing on another system
Cause: sidecar formats often carry timing and text but not the full visual styling of a rendered caption. Fix: confirm whether the receiver expects burned-in text, a styled embedded track, or plain timed text.
Audio sounds different after export
Cause: export channel mapping, codec settings, or playback software changed the result. Fix: inspect the exported file with the same playback path your audience will use and correct the project or export mapping.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I create captions before editing the picture?
No. Create them when the picture edit is finished or close to finished; later deletions and insertions can require manual caption reconstruction.
Can an SRT file preserve the exact visual style I designed?
Usually you should not assume that. SRT is a timed-text sidecar; confirm whether the receiving system applies its own style or requires burned-in or embedded text.
