For most developers, Microsoft Playwright MCP is the best open-source starting point for browser automation. It gives an AI client structured accessibility snapshots and browser controls across Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, while optional capability groups add testing, network, PDF and debugging tools. Choose Chrome DevTools MCP instead when Chrome diagnostics, performance traces and DevTools data are the main objective. Browser Use is worth considering when you want a Python/TypeScript browser agent or hosted browser infrastructure, but the evidence here does not establish it as a like-for-like MCP server.
There is no universal winner. Your choice depends on browser engines, whether the work is interaction or diagnostics, local versus hosted execution, context-window limits and the sensitivity of the browser session.
Quick comparison
| Project | Best fit | Browser scope | Standout capabilities | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Playwright MCP | General-purpose browser automation and agent workflows | Chromium, Firefox and WebKit; the repository also documents browser/channel configuration including Edge | Accessibility snapshots, navigation, element finding, clicks, typing, forms, screenshots, optional testing, network, storage, vision, PDF, tracing and debugging | Its README says it is not a security boundary; maintainers note that CLI plus skills can be more token-efficient for coding agents |
| Chrome DevTools MCP | Chrome debugging, runtime inspection and performance analysis | Google Chrome and Chrome for Testing; other Chromium browsers are not guaranteed | Performance traces and insights, network inspection, console messages with source-mapped stacks, screenshots and Puppeteer automation | Chrome-specific scope; usage statistics are collected by default with a documented opt-out |
| Browser Use | A Python/TypeScript agent, library or hosted browser service | Varies by local or hosted route | Open-source agent and separate CLI, library and cloud paths | The reviewed documentation does not establish a like-for-like MCP integration; its listed $0.02 per browser-hour is a vendor price that can change |
This is a documentation-based comparison, not a benchmark. Project features, package tags, browser versions and hosted prices can change, so verify the linked documentation when you deploy.
1. Microsoft Playwright MCP: the strongest default
Playwright MCP lets an LLM interact with pages through structured accessibility snapshots instead of requiring a screenshot and vision model for every action. The server exposes the practical controls an agent needs: navigate, inspect a snapshot, locate an element, click, type, fill forms and capture screenshots. Because the model receives semantic page structure, workflows such as “find the billing address field and enter this value” can be expressed as element actions rather than coordinate guesses.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Browser coverage
The official project documents Chromium, Firefox and WebKit support, with browser and channel settings that can also target channels such as Edge. That breadth makes Playwright the better choice when a workflow must be checked outside Chrome or when cross-engine behavior matters.
Expose only the tools you need
Playwright’s capability documentation describes optional groups for network mocking, cookie and storage management, testing assertions and locator generation, screenshot-coordinate vision controls, PDF export, and tracing, video and debugging. Start with core navigation and interaction. Add a group only when the workflow requires it: fewer enabled tools mean a smaller schema and fewer choices for the model.
Install and run it
The documented package invocation is:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest
The project describes a headed browser by default. Its options cover headless mode, profiles, remote browser endpoints and HTTP transport. Decide whether a persistent profile is appropriate before connecting an account: a profile can contain cookies, local storage and other credentials.
When the CLI is preferable
The repository notes that coding agents may benefit from a CLI-plus-skills workflow instead of MCP because it can be more token-efficient. If your agent is writing and running code repeatedly rather than exploring arbitrary sites, compare both approaches with your context budget and tool-call volume.
2. Chrome DevTools MCP: choose it for Chrome diagnostics
Chrome DevTools MCP is designed for an agent that needs to control and inspect a live Chrome browser. In addition to Puppeteer-driven automation and screenshots, it exposes network inspection, console output with source-mapped stack traces, performance traces and actionable performance insights.

Where it wins
Use it for questions such as “which request blocks first paint?”, “what console error maps to this source line?” or “record a trace and identify the slow interaction.” Those are diagnostic tasks, not merely click-through automation, and the DevTools-oriented surface is a closer fit.
Supported browsers and setup
The project officially supports Google Chrome and Chrome for Testing. Support for other Chromium browsers is not guaranteed. The standard invocation is:
npx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@latest
For basic tasks, documented flags include --slim and --headless. Advanced options cover concurrent sessions, persistent user data, attaching to an already running Chrome and Android debugging. Keep the selected data directory isolated when an agent does not need your everyday profile.
Telemetry and browser-data access
The repository warns that an MCP client can inspect, debug and modify browser contents. It also states that usage statistics—including invocation success rates, latency and environment information—are collected by default and documents --no-usage-statistics as an opt-out. Review that setting, your MCP client’s permissions and the data in any attached profile before opening a logged-in session.
3. Browser Use: an adjacent agent or hosted route
Browser Use presents an open-source browser agent in Python and TypeScript, with separate CLI, library and hosted paths. That makes it relevant when you want an agent framework or cloud browser infrastructure rather than a narrowly defined MCP server. The project currently lists Browser Use Cloud at $0.02 per browser-hour; treat that as a vendor-listed price and recheck it before budgeting.

How to choose
Choose by browser engine
- Pick Playwright MCP when Firefox or WebKit, as well as Chromium, is required.
- Pick Chrome DevTools MCP when Chrome is the target and Chrome’s diagnostics are central.
- Consider Browser Use when the important decision is an agent/library or hosted browser service, not cross-engine MCP coverage.
Choose by task shape
- Structured interaction: Playwright snapshots and locators suit navigation, forms and repeatable element actions.
- Runtime investigation: Chrome DevTools MCP adds traces, network data and console diagnostics.
- Agent framework or hosted execution: Evaluate Browser Use’s local and cloud paths separately from MCP server selection.
Choose by testing and debugging needs
Playwright’s optional assertions, locator generation, traces and recordings support test-oriented workflows. Chrome DevTools MCP emphasizes Chrome performance traces, network inspection and console debugging. These are documented capability differences, not measured reliability scores.
Choose local versus hosted operation
Playwright MCP and Chrome DevTools MCP are installed as local packages in their documented setups. Browser Use separately offers a hosted browser service. Check where pages, cookies, prompts and artifacts are processed, and whether the deployment satisfies your organization’s data-residency rules.
Choose for context efficiency
Playwright lets an operator limit exposed tools by capability group. Begin with the smallest surface that can complete the job. For coding-heavy agents, compare that MCP surface with the CLI-plus-skills workflow mentioned by the Playwright maintainers.
A practical setup workflow
- Define the browser boundary. Decide which engine, browser channel, headless/headed mode, profile and remote endpoint are allowed. Use a clean profile for automation unless the task explicitly needs an authenticated session.
- Install the server. Run
npx @playwright/mcp@latestfor Playwright ornpx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@latestfor Chrome DevTools MCP. Pin a reviewed package version in production rather than relying indefinitely on@latest. - Start with core tools. For Playwright, expose navigation, snapshots, element finding, clicks, typing and screenshots. Add network, storage, testing, PDF or tracing groups only when needed.
- Exercise a harmless page. Ask the client to navigate, inspect the accessibility snapshot, click a public link and return a screenshot. Confirm that the browser opens in the intended mode and that artifacts are stored where expected.
- Set session isolation. Use separate profiles or data directories per job. Do not pass production cookies to an agent that only needs public pages.
- Apply observability and limits. Record the MCP client’s tool calls, cap navigation to approved domains where your client supports it, and set timeouts appropriate to the site. For Chrome DevTools MCP, decide explicitly whether to retain default usage statistics or pass
--no-usage-statistics. - Promote carefully. Recheck the official repositories for changed flags, supported browser versions and security notes before moving from a local experiment to CI or a shared service.
Security and privacy checklist
- Treat browser pages, cookies, local storage, tokens and downloaded files as sensitive data.
- Remember Playwright MCP’s explicit statement: “Playwright MCP is not a security boundary.”
- Assume a connected MCP client can inspect or modify the browser session; Chrome DevTools MCP says this directly.
- Use least-privilege accounts, isolated profiles and disposable sessions for untrusted sites.
- Review telemetry defaults and opt out where policy requires it.
- Keep MCP server packages and browser binaries updated, but validate updates in a non-production profile first.
Common problems and fixes
The command is not found or exits immediately
Confirm a current Node.js installation and run the exact package command from the project’s documentation. If a package tag changed, open the repository and use its current invocation rather than guessing a replacement.

The browser launches but the agent cannot identify controls
For Playwright, request a fresh accessibility snapshot after navigation or a major page update. Wait for the target selector or page state before clicking; dynamic pages can invalidate an earlier snapshot. For Chrome DevTools MCP, verify that the client is attached to the intended Chrome instance and tab.

Use Playwright MCP, whose documentation lists those engines. Chrome DevTools MCP officially targets Chrome and Chrome for Testing, so changing to another Chromium browser is not a supported substitute.
Performance data is missing
Use Chrome DevTools MCP for trace and network-oriented diagnosis, ensure the page has completed the interaction you want to measure, and preserve the trace output. A screenshot alone cannot explain a slow request or console stack.
Authentication leaks between jobs
Stop reusing a persistent profile. Create an isolated data directory, remove stored cookies and local storage, and grant the agent only the account and domains required for the task.
Tool calls consume too much context
Reduce Playwright’s enabled capability groups and expose only the tools used by the workflow. If the job is code-centric, test the documented CLI-plus-skills alternative.

For screenshot-only jobs, use a screenshot API instead
If your automation ends with “return a clean image or PDF of this URL,” an MCP browser may be unnecessary. ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try: it removes consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan described here.
Or skip the browser setup
A single request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Equivalent clients:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters. Its response identifies page and billing outcomes with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Every plan includes its features; 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Cost, performance and reliability considerations
- Open-source does not mean zero operating cost: you still manage Node.js, browser binaries, profiles, compute, patching and artifact storage for local servers.
- Browser startup matters: persistent, isolated workers can reduce launch overhead, but they increase the importance of profile cleanup and concurrency limits.
- Headless is not automatically faster or safer: choose it for unattended jobs, then verify pages that behave differently without a visible window.
- Retries need boundaries: retry navigation and transient network failures, but do not blindly repeat payments, form submissions or destructive clicks.
- Hosted pricing changes: Browser Use’s $0.02-per-browser-hour figure is a current vendor-listed price, not an independent benchmark.
- Do not infer reliability from feature lists: none of the reviewed sources provides an independent uptime or success-rate comparison.
Decision summary
Start with Playwright MCP for broad, structured browser automation and cross-engine coverage. Select Chrome DevTools MCP when Chrome performance and debugging evidence is the work product. Evaluate Browser Use as an agent or hosted-browser option after confirming the exact integration you need. Whichever route you choose, isolate sessions, minimize exposed tools and verify current project documentation before handling sensitive accounts.
Frequently Asked Questions
