A screenshot is a still image of what appeared on a screen at one moment. Screen capture is a broader term: depending on the device or software, it can mean taking a still image, recording screen activity over time, or acquiring frames for a stream. If you need to show one state, use a screenshot; if you need to show what changed or how to do something, use a screen recording.
Screen capture vs. screenshot: the key difference
The practical distinction is whether you need a single moment or activity over time. A screenshot preserves one visible state as an image. A screen recording preserves changes across a period, usually as video. In everyday conversation, people sometimes use “screen capture” to mean a screenshot, but technical documentation may use it as an umbrella term for both snapshots and streams.

Google Android Help makes the everyday distinction directly: “You can take a picture (screenshot) or record a video of your phone’s screen.” The labels are not universal, however. A platform or API may call the overall capability “screen capture” while offering separate screenshot and recording functions.
Which one should you choose?
Start with what the person viewing the result needs to understand. If one frame communicates it, take a screenshot. If the order of actions, motion, or a change between states matters, record the screen. A recording may show more context, but it is also a longer file to review; a still image is quick to scan but cannot show what happened before or after it.

- Choose a screenshot for a single visible result, a reference image, or a state you want someone to inspect without watching a clip.
- Choose a screen recording for a sequence of steps, animation, interaction, or a problem that appears only while something is happening.
- Choose a scrolling screenshot when the relevant content extends below the visible area and your device supports capturing a scrollable page as one image.
Before capturing, decide whether the audience needs the whole display, one window, a selected region, or a scrollable page. Also consider whether audio or visible touch/click context matters, where the file will be saved, and whether you plan to edit or share it. Those choices can affect the capture method and available controls.
How to capture a still or recording on a Mac
On Mac, the built-in Screenshot interface provides both still-image and recording controls. Apple’s Mac guide says to open it with Shift-Command-5. From there, choose whether to capture or record the whole display, a window, or a selected portion. Use the available options to set a save location or timer; for a recording, options include microphone selection.
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot interface.
- Choose a still-image control if you need one moment, or a recording control if you need activity over time.
- Select the whole display, a window, or a selected portion, according to what the viewer needs to see.
- Open Options to review the save location and timer; for a recording, select a microphone if audio is needed.
- Start the capture, then locate the result in the chosen save location.
The important decision is the output, not the name of the interface: choose a still capture for a static result and a recording for motion or a sequence. The available controls described here are those in Apple’s Mac Screenshot interface; other Apple devices and software may present different options. How to capture a screenshot or recording on Android
Android’s exact screenshot button flow and gestures vary by phone. Google documents taking a screenshot through the device’s button flow, taking scrolling screenshots on Android 12 and later on most screens that allow scrolling, and starting a screen recording from Quick Settings. Recording options can include audio and touch indicators; screenshot editing and sharing controls may also be available.

- For content longer than one screen, check for the scrolling screenshot option. Google says this is available on Android 12 and up on most screens that allow scrolling.
- For a video, open Quick Settings and select the screen-recording control, if available on your device.
- Before recording, review the available audio and touch-display options so the clip includes the context you need.
- After capture, use the device’s available editing or sharing controls to review the result.
If the documented steps do not match your phone, Google directs users to the phone manufacturer’s support site. Device, manufacturer, and software version affect gestures and available controls. What “screen capture” means in developer documentation
For developers, “screen capture” can describe a capability rather than a particular file type. The APIs may acquire frames for a live video stream, or support a single still image. Read the API’s output types and method names before assuming that “capture” means a screenshot or that it always means a recording.

Apple ScreenCaptureKit
Apple describes ScreenCaptureKit as a framework for streaming screen content and audio, with fine-grained control over what an app captures. Its documentation also includes screenshot-related classes, including SCScreenshotManager and screenshot configuration types, for obtaining single frames. Apple says ScreenCaptureKit replaces ReplayKit for screen streaming and mirroring. In other words, the framework name refers to a broader set of capture functions, not only screenshots. Microsoft Windows.Graphics.Capture
Microsoft describes Windows.Graphics.Capture as acquiring frames from a display or app window to create video streams or snapshots. Its system UI lets a user select content and indicates active capture with a yellow border. Here, too, the broader capture workflow can serve more than one purpose; the chosen output determines whether the result is a stream or a still. Simulated devices
Apple’s Device Hub documentation also distinguishes a Screenshot action from recording a video of an app in action on simulated devices. That is a useful terminology clue: even when two controls live in the same tool, one can save a still and the other can preserve activity. The wording in a particular development tool should be interpreted by checking the action and output, rather than relying only on the label. See Apple’s Device Hub documentation.

Website screenshots are different from recording a device screen
A screenshot of a web page can mean capturing a rendered page in a browser or through a service, rather than photographing the entire device display. That can be the right output when you need a web page as an image or PDF. It is still a snapshot: it does not, by itself, show a visitor moving through the page or interacting with it over time. For a walkthrough of a changing interface, capture a screen recording instead.

Common points of confusion
- “Screen capture” does not always mean video. In some contexts it refers to a still; in developer APIs it can cover snapshots and streams. Check the specific output or action.
- A screenshot does not show a sequence. It preserves one moment. If a sequence or motion is the evidence, record the screen.
- A scrolling screenshot is not the same as a recording. It can include content beyond the visible viewport in one image, on supported devices and screens; it does not preserve movement over time.
- Button flows and controls are not identical across devices. In particular, Android gestures vary by phone, and scrolling screenshots depend on Android version and whether the screen allows scrolling.
- A web-page screenshot is not necessarily a full-device screenshot. It can represent only a rendered page. Choose a device screen recording if you need to show interaction with the surrounding device interface.
How to troubleshoot a capture that is not right
The result is a still image, but you expected a video
Check whether you chose a screenshot action or a recording action. A capture tool may offer both under a similarly named menu; select its recording control and confirm that the expected output is video before starting.
The screenshot cuts off content below the screen
A regular screenshot captures the visible state, not necessarily the entire scrollable page. On Android, look for a scrolling screenshot option; Google documents it for Android 12 and later on most screens that allow scrolling. If the option is absent or the page does not support it, the feature may not be available for that screen or device.
The shortcut or gesture does not work
For Mac, confirm you are opening the built-in Screenshot interface with Shift-Command-5. On Android, do not assume another manufacturer uses the same gesture: Google notes that the exact button flow varies by phone and recommends the manufacturer’s support site when its instructions do not work.

The recording has no sound or touch context
Before starting, inspect the recording options. Android recording can offer audio and touch-display controls, and Apple’s Mac Screenshot options include microphone selection. Availability and labels depend on the platform and device.
The captured area or saved file is not what you intended
Review the selected scope and save location before capturing. On Mac, the Screenshot interface supports a whole display, window, or selected portion and includes save-location controls. If the result is intended for someone else, open it once to verify that it shows the necessary context before sharing.
