Set one canonical HTTPS hostname and redirect every IP, HTTP, alternate-host, and (where applicable) IPv6 request to it with a server-side permanent redirect. Put the rule in the first web server or CDN layer that receives the request, preserve the original path and query string, then verify the Location header and final URL with command-line tests. Finish by aligning canonical tags, internal links, and sitemaps with the same hostname.
What an IP canonical issue is
An IP canonical issue occurs when the same site responds at a numeric address such as http://203.0.113.10/ and at its intended hostname such as https://example.com/. The problem can also involve several hostname and scheme variants: apex versus www, HTTP versus HTTPS, or IPv4 versus IPv6. Search engines then have to choose which URL represents the page.
The target state is simple: one exact HTTPS hostname is public, and every alternate entry point returns one redirect hop to that hostname. A request for http://203.0.113.10/products?id=42, for example, should end at https://example.com/products?id=42, not at a home page, an old host, or another redirecting URL.
Inventory every entry point before changing configuration
Test the variants that can actually reach your infrastructure and record the status code, every Location header, and the final URL.

- Check the IPv4 address over HTTP and, if a valid TLS certificate is available for the IP, over HTTPS.
- Check the apex hostname and
wwwhostname over both HTTP and HTTPS. - Use a representative deep path, a path containing a trailing slash, and a URL with a query string.
- Check IPv6 if the domain has an
AAAArecord or your server listens on IPv6. - Send an unknown or empty
Hostvalue where your server or CDN permits it; this reveals the default virtual host.

curl -sS -IL 'http://203.0.113.10/products?id=42'For an HTTPS test that deliberately bypasses DNS while still sending the canonical hostname and SNI, use --resolve:
curl -sS -I --resolve example.com:443:203.0.113.10 'https://example.com/products?id=42'Do not use -k as proof that HTTPS is healthy. It disables certificate verification and is useful only for diagnosing a certificate or routing problem.
Choose the canonical destination and redirect status
Choose one exact destination, normally https://example.com or https://www.example.com. The certificate presented during the final HTTPS connection must cover that hostname. Redirecting an IP request to a hostname with an invalid certificate merely moves the failure to the next connection.

Google describes redirects as a strong signal that the redirect target should become canonical. A temporary experiment should therefore use 302, while a settled production choice should use a permanent redirect. Avoid chains such as IP → HTTP domain → HTTPS domain; point the first request directly at the final HTTPS URL.
Redirect at the origin with Apache
Place a catch-all or default virtual host before the normal application virtual hosts so an IP request or unknown Host cannot fall through to an unrelated site. Apache’s Redirect directive appends the requested path to the target.

</VirtualHost>Make this the default port-80 virtual host, or create an explicit catch-all according to your Apache version and host layout. A request for /products?id=42 becomes https://example.com/products?id=42; verify that behavior rather than assuming it after a configuration reload.
If you intentionally accept HTTPS connections addressed to the IP, configure a separate default :443 virtual host with a certificate valid for the requested name and return the same redirect. If the browser reaches the IP with a certificate that does not match the IP, it can stop with a certificate warning before Apache has an opportunity to send a redirect. In that case, fix the certificate/routing design or ensure users enter the hostname directly.

Nginx can handle both IPv4 and IPv6 in a default server block. The $request_uri variable contains the original path and query string, so it is appropriate when you want to preserve both.

systemctl reload nginxFor HTTPS requests that arrive at a default server, add a corresponding listen 443 ssl default_server block only when the certificate presented there is valid for the connection. Otherwise, clients may reject the TLS handshake before the redirect is generated.
Use Cloudflare when the hostname is proxied
If Cloudflare is the first layer receiving the request, use Redirect Rules or URL Forwarding rather than relying on an origin rule that the request may never reach. Match the unwanted host or scheme, set the destination to the canonical HTTPS hostname, and enable preservation of the original path and query string. Cloudflare documents forwarding behavior that can retain both.
When an alias domain has no origin server attached, Cloudflare also documents alias-domain forwarding. This is useful when the alternate hostname exists only to redirect and should not be sent to an application server.

After publishing a rule, check whether DNS is proxied, whether another rule has a higher priority, and whether a cached redirect is masking the new behavior. Test both the edge response and the origin response where you have access to both.
Preserve paths and query strings without creating loops
A canonical redirect should normally retain the request path and query string. This lets a link to /docs/setup?lang=en arrive at the equivalent canonical URL instead of being discarded at the home page.
- In Nginx, use
$request_uriin thereturndirective. - In Apache, use
Redirect permanent / https://example.com/or a rewrite that explicitly retains the original path; test encoded characters and trailing slashes. - In Cloudflare, select the documented option to preserve path and query string.
- Do not redirect the canonical hostname back through the IP rule. Exclude the final host from any broad catch-all condition.
- Keep the chain to one hop whenever possible. A chain increases latency and makes failures harder to diagnose.
If a particular legacy path must map to a different page, create a deliberate path-specific rule and document that exception. Do not use a fixed landing page for every IP request unless losing the original path is intentional.
Align the other canonical signals
Redirects are only one signal. Update internal links so they use the selected HTTPS hostname, add a self-referencing rel="canonical" tag on indexable pages, and list only canonical URLs in XML sitemaps. Remove old hostnames from templates, feeds, structured data, and hard-coded asset URLs where they can create alternate crawl paths.

After deployment, use Google Search Console URL Inspection on representative pages from the IP, old host, HTTP, HTTPS, apex, www, and IPv6 variants. Check that Google can fetch the redirect and eventually reports the expected selected canonical after recrawling.
Verification procedure
- Check the first response. Run
curl -sS -D - -o /dev/nullagainst each variant. Production alternates should return a permanent redirect, not a successful copy of the page. - Check the destination. Confirm that
Locationuses the exact canonical HTTPS hostname and does not point to an IP, HTTP URL, old host, or another redirect. - Check path and query retention. Test a deep URL with a query string and compare the final URL after
curl -IL. - Check the final response. Follow the redirect and confirm a normal successful page, not a loop, error, login wall, or unrelated default site.
- Check every network family. Test IPv4 and IPv6 separately when both are enabled; an AAAA record can bypass an IPv4-only fix.
- Check browser behavior. Open the IP and alternate hosts in a clean session and inspect the address bar, certificate, and developer-tools network panel.
- Check search signals. Inspect canonical tags, internal links, sitemap entries, and Search Console results after the site has been recrawled.
Troubleshooting common failures
The browser shows a certificate warning before redirecting
TLS negotiation happens before an HTTP redirect can be delivered. If the certificate does not cover the IP or requested hostname, the browser may block the connection. Use the canonical hostname, install a certificate that matches the name being served, or terminate TLS at a correctly configured CDN.

The redirect loops between HTTP and HTTPS
Look at every layer: CDN encryption mode, reverse-proxy headers, origin rewrite rules, and application-level HTTPS redirects. A proxy that talks HTTP to the origin can cause the origin to believe the client is insecure unless the forwarding headers and trust settings are consistent. Remove duplicate rules and make one layer authoritative.
The IP serves the wrong website
The request is reaching another default virtual host. Put the catch-all block first or configure an explicit default server, then reload and retest with an unknown host. On a shared server, make sure the IP request is not being routed to a different tenant.

Inspect the literal Location header. In Nginx, use $request_uri; in Apache, avoid replacing the request with a fixed home-page URL. In Cloudflare, enable path and query preservation. Test encoded characters, repeated parameters, and a URL without a trailing slash.
Only IPv4 redirects correctly
Check the AAAA record and the IPv6 listener. Configure an IPv6 default server or remove the record until IPv6 is ready. Test with curl --ipv6 and compare the response with the IPv4 result.
Cloudflare appears to ignore the rule
Confirm that the hostname is proxied, the rule expression matches the actual Host and scheme, and no higher-priority Redirect Rule, Page Rule, Worker, or cache is winning. Review edge analytics, purge an outdated redirect when necessary, and test from a response that exposes the current Location.
Search results still show the IP
Search engines do not change every result immediately. Confirm that the redirect is accessible, canonical tags and sitemaps agree, and no internal links continue to promote the IP. Use URL Inspection on representative URLs and wait for recrawling rather than creating additional redirect chains.

Origin server or CDN: choosing the control point

Many sites use both: the CDN performs the public hostname consolidation, while the origin’s default virtual host remains a safety net for direct traffic. Keep the resulting behavior identical so one layer does not send requests to a different destination.

- One exact HTTPS hostname is selected and its certificate is valid.
- IP, HTTP, alternate-host, IPv4, IPv6, and unknown-Host requests are covered where applicable.
- The first response is a single permanent redirect in production.
- The

Frequently Asked Questions
Can DNS alone redirect an IP address to a domain?
No. DNS can point a hostname at an address, but an HTTP redirect must be returned by a web server, reverse proxy, CDN, or forwarding service.
Is every page available on an IP automatically a canonicalization problem?
No. It becomes a problem when the IP and hostname expose the same public content or when the IP is an unintended alternate entry point. A deliberately separate service may need different routing instead of consolidation.
How quickly will search results change after the redirect?
There is no fixed interval. Once the redirect, canonical tags, links, and sitemap agree, use URL Inspection and allow Google to recrawl the affected URLs.
