For a React file picker, use the browser’s native <input type="file">. Connect it to a visible label, read selected File objects from input.files, and submit them through a named form field or FormData. Keep the picker’s selection browser-managed: React state can store files for displaying names or previews, but it should not set the input’s value.
Build a reusable file input component
This component supports one or multiple files, an optional picker filter, and an optional callback. It keeps a separate state snapshot for rendering the selected filenames; the native input remains responsible for the actual selection.
import { useId, useState } from 'react';
export function FilePicker({ multiple = false, accept, onFilesSelected }) {
const inputId = useId();
const [files, setFiles] = useState([]);
function handleChange(event) {
const selected = Array.from(event.currentTarget.files ?? []);
setFiles(selected);
onFilesSelected?.(selected);
}
return (
<div>
<label htmlFor={inputId}>Choose file{multiple ? 's' : ''}</label>
<input
id={inputId}
name="files"
type="file"
accept={accept}
multiple={multiple}
onChange={handleChange}
/>
{files.length > 0 && (
<ul aria-live="polite">
{files.map((file) => (
<li key={`${file.name}-${file.lastModified}`}>
{file.name} ({file.size} bytes)
</li>
))}
</ul>
)}
</div>
);
}
useId gives each component instance an ID that can pair its label with its input. A visible, associated label helps assistive technology identify the control. See React’s input reference.
Choose whether to submit the form or manage the upload in JavaScript
Use the form’s name and FormData when submitting the selected file along with other form fields. Prevent the default navigation only when the page should handle submission in place.

function UploadForm() {
function handleSubmit(event) {
event.preventDefault();
const formData = new FormData(event.currentTarget);
fetch('/upload', { method: 'POST', body: formData });
}
return (
<form onSubmit={handleSubmit}>
<label htmlFor="attachments">Attachments</label>
<input id="attachments" name="attachments" type="file" multiple />
<button type="submit">Upload</button>
</form>
);
}
When sending a FormData body with fetch, do not manually set the multipart Content-Type; the browser supplies the boundary. For a custom upload flow, read the files in onChange, retain the File objects if the interface needs them, and append them to FormData. Repeated files can use the same field name, but the field name and the server’s expected request format must match. See React’s form reference and MDN’s FormData.append() reference.
Use the form’s native submission when that fits
A named file input can be collected with the rest of the form data. If the page should follow the browser’s regular form-submission behavior, you do not need to add an onSubmit handler solely to read files.

Use JavaScript when the interface needs more control
Handle submission in React when the page needs to update without navigating or when it must coordinate the upload with previews, progress, retry, or removal controls. The backend determines whether it expects one file or repeated fields.
Configure selection and file-type hints
- One file: Omit
multiple. Add it only when users should be able to select more than one file. - Picker filter: Set
acceptto a comma-separated list of extensions, MIME types, or broad types such asimage/*. You can include both extensions and MIME types for format aliases. - Camera or microphone capture: For suitable media types,
capture="user"orcapture="environment"can request a user-facing or outward-facing capture device. The browser may use a fallback if that mode is unavailable; use this only when capture is an intentional requirement. - Empty selection: Read
input.filesand check itslength. It is aFileListofFileobjects; each file exposes properties includingname,size,type, andlastModified.
Validate files on the server
accept is a picker hint, not validation. MDN explains that it “provides hints for browsers to guide users towards selecting the correct file types.” Users or software can still supply a file that does not match the hint, so enforce allowed types and other upload rules on the server. Do not treat a filename extension or client-provided MIME type as proof of a file’s contents. See MDN’s file input reference.

Keep the input browser-managed and accessible
- Do not control its value like a text field. The browser manages the file selection, and scripts cannot populate the picker with an arbitrary local path. Keep selected
Fileobjects in separate state only when the UI needs to render them. - Pair every input with a label. Nest the input inside a
<label>, or set the label’shtmlForto the input’sid. Use a distinct ID for every component instance. - Preserve keyboard access when styling. Keep the native picker operable, and make visible instructions or errors programmatically associated with the input.
- Name fields you expect the form to submit. The input’s
nameis the form-data key; without it, collecting the form will not provide that named file field. - Set button types explicitly. A button inside a form submits by default. Use
type="button"for other actions andtype="submit"for the upload control.
React form actions and version considerations
React also supports passing a function to a form’s action; that function receives form data and runs in a Transition. This differs from the conventional URL-valued HTML action. Choose between that API and an onSubmit handler based on the React version and form architecture in the application. The standard onSubmit pattern is to call preventDefault() when handling submission in place, then construct new FormData(event.currentTarget).
