To make an HTTP request in Python, use an HTTP client such as Requests, set a finite timeout, check the HTTP status, and then read the response in the format the API returns. Requests is a third-party package; Python also includes urllib.request for standard-library-only scripts.

How do I make an HTTP request in Python?

An HTTP client sends a request to a server and receives a response. A request includes a method, such as GET, a URL, headers, and sometimes a body. The response has a status code, headers, and content; receiving a response does not necessarily mean the request succeeded. The Python urllib HOWTO explains this request-and-response model.

For a first API call, install Requests if needed with python -m pip install requests. The Requests project describes the library as “an elegant and simple HTTP library for Python, built for human beings.” Its current documentation states that it supports Python 3.10 and newer; check the project documentation for current compatibility.

import requests

response = requests.get(
    "https://api.example.com/items",
    params={"limit": 5},
    timeout=10,
)
response.raise_for_status()
items = response.json()
print(items)

api.example.com is a placeholder, not a live endpoint. Replace it with a public API endpoint whose documentation permits your use. The example passes a query parameter, limits how long the request waits, raises an exception for an unsuccessful HTTP status, and parses the response as JSON. It is a teaching example, not a claim that the placeholder request was run.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How do I use the Requests library?

Send query parameters as data

Use params for GET query parameters rather than manually building a query string. Requests encodes the values into the URL, which avoids common errors with spaces and other special characters. For example, params={"q": "green tea", "limit": 5} asks the client to encode both values. The API determines which parameter names it accepts and what they mean; consult its documentation. See the Requests Quickstart.

Choose the response representation

  • response.text gives decoded text.
  • response.content gives the response body as bytes, useful for binary content.
  • response.json() parses a JSON response into Python values. It can fail if the response body is not valid JSON, so check the status and the API’s expected response format first.

Use the representation that matches the content; a response is not guaranteed to be JSON just because the request went to an API.

Handle status and network failures

raise_for_status() raises an exception for unsuccessful HTTP status codes, rather than letting the script proceed as though the response were successful. A finite timeout keeps a script from waiting indefinitely for a response. Requests documents both features in its Quickstart.

For a small script, let these exceptions stop execution with a clear traceback. If the script needs to recover, catch the relevant Requests exceptions around the request and handle them deliberately—for example, report a connection or timeout problem, or decide whether a particular status merits a retry. Do not retry every failure automatically: the API may impose rate limits, and repeating a request that changes server data can have unintended effects.

Send data with POST

Requests supports requests.post(). Its data argument can send form-encoded fields, while JSON APIs commonly expect a JSON body sent with the library’s json argument. Follow the endpoint’s documented method, field names, and content format; there is no universal POST format. The Requests Quickstart shows these request patterns.

What should I check before calling an API?

  • Authentication: Determine whether the API requires a key, token, or other credentials. Avoid committing secrets directly in source code; load them from an appropriate secret store or environment-specific configuration.
  • Usage rules and rate limits: Check the provider’s permitted uses, request limits, and any instructions for handling rate-limit responses.
  • Pagination: Some endpoints return only one page of results. Follow the API’s documented pagination parameters or links if you need more.
  • Response schema: Confirm the fields and data types the endpoint returns before relying on them in your script.
  • Transport security: Prefer HTTPS and keep certificate verification enabled. Do not disable verification simply to get past a certificate error. Requests documents SSL verification and authentication in its project documentation.

Can I make a request with Python’s standard library?

Yes. Python includes urllib.request, so a separate package is not required. Python’s 3.13 documentation says, “The Requests package is recommended for a higher-level HTTP client interface,” while documenting urllib.request as the built-in alternative. urlopen() accepts a URL or a Request object, supports a timeout, and returns a context-manager response. See the Python 3.13 urllib.request documentation.

from urllib.request import urlopen

url = "https://api.example.com/items?limit=5"

with urlopen(url, timeout=10) as response:
    status = response.status
    body = response.read()

if not 200 <= status < 300:
    raise RuntimeError(f"HTTP request failed with status {status}")

print(body.decode("utf-8"))

This example reads bytes from the response and decodes them as UTF-8 for display. It checks for a successful 2xx status before using the body, but it does not parse JSON. For JSON, decode the bytes and pass the resulting string to Python’s json.loads(); handle parsing errors if the endpoint might return something else. As with Requests, the URL is a placeholder and the API’s documented response format governs how to process the content.

Which Python HTTP client should a beginner choose?

Reader need Requests urllib.request
Installation Third-party package; install with python -m pip install requests. Included in Python’s standard library.
Common call shape Direct methods such as requests.get() and requests.post(). urlopen(), optionally with a Request object.
Frequent API tasks Project documentation covers parameters, JSON, headers, authentication, sessions, and timeouts. Provides handlers for headers, authentication, proxies, and request data through a lower-level interface.
Good fit A concise, approachable interface when adding a dependency is acceptable. A standard-library-only solution or a need to work with its lower-level interface.

Both can make HTTP requests; choose based on project constraints and the interface you prefer, not an assumed speed difference. Python’s urllib.request documentation and the Requests project documentation describe the respective options.
