Check the complete locale and your exact LibreOffice Portable version first, then either disable hyphenation or install matching pattern data from a source intended for that build.
What the warning means
A typical message reads: “Missing hyphenation data Please install the hyphenation package for locale ‘en’.” Writer is trying to use automatic hyphenation, but the Libhyphen pattern data for the text’s assigned locale is unavailable or not recognized.
Hyphenation patterns are separate from spelling dictionaries, thesauri, grammar tools and the user-interface language. Having an English dictionary bundle or an en-GB language pack therefore does not establish that the required hyphenation data is installed.
Start with the locale and build information
- Copy the complete locale shown in the warning.
en,en-USanden-GBare different identifiers; do not assume that a package for one is interchangeable with another. - Record the exact LibreOffice Portable release and whether you are running Windows or another operating system.
- Check the language assigned to the affected text. A document or paragraph may use a different locale from the application interface.
These details determine which pattern data can work. The archived reports behind this warning involved LibreOffice 7.0.4.2 on Windows 10 and a Linux development installation, but neither report proves the same fix for current portable releases.

Choose the appropriate fix

If you do not want hyphenation
An archived LibreOffice users-list response gives this reported path:
- Open Tools → Options.
- Select Language Settings → Writing Aids.
- Find Libhyphen Hyphenator and disable it.
- Confirm the dialogs and reopen the document if the warning remains visible.
This setting path was reported in 2021, so the wording or location may differ in your release. Disabling the component stops LibreOffice from trying to perform automatic hyphenation; it does not install any language data.

If you need automatic hyphenation
Use data that matches the complete locale
Obtain hyphenation patterns from a trusted source appropriate for your operating system and LibreOffice distribution. Match the locale shown in the warning rather than choosing a broadly named English package. Do not treat an interface language pack or a spelling dictionary as proof that the required patterns are included.
System-package installations
On Debian-family systems, packaging metadata separates spelling dictionaries, hyphenation patterns and thesauri into different package families. Package names and availability vary by distribution and release, so Debian package names should not be used as instructions for a Windows PortableApps installation.

PortableApps installations
Portable builds can keep resources inside the application directory instead of the operating system’s normal LibreOffice locations. Before copying anything, back up the portable folder and inspect the directories shipped with your exact release. A community extraction of LibreOffice Portable 25.2.3 identifies PortableApps → LibreOfficePortable → App → libreoffice → share → extensions and files such as hyph_*.dic. That report is version-specific and third-party: it does not show that every release uses the same layout or that copying one file alone is sufficient.
Common mistakes
- Installing only a language pack: interface translation and hyphenation patterns are separate components.
- Installing only a spelling dictionary: spelling support does not imply that automatic hyphenation data is available.
- Copying a file from another release: file names and directories can change between versions and platforms.
- Ignoring the full locale: a warning for
enis not enough information to select anen-USoren-GBpattern set safely. - Following system-package instructions for a portable build: portable and system installations may load resources from different locations.
Verify the result
- Restart LibreOffice Portable after installing or changing pattern data.
- Recheck the text’s assigned language and the exact locale requested by the warning.
- Open a document with a paragraph long enough to require line breaking and confirm whether automatic hyphenation works.
- If the warning persists, undo the file change, confirm that the pattern data matches the locale, and consult documentation or support for the exact portable release rather than copying another package at random.
The available reports provide troubleshooting clues, not a tested current installation procedure for every PortableApps release. Treat any directory or file name from another build as an inspection lead, not a guaranteed fix.
