There is no universal winner. For a new end-to-end suite that should run across Chromium, Firefox and WebKit with isolated test state and an integrated runner, Playwright is usually the more direct fit. Choose Selenium when your existing stack depends on its language bindings, you need WebDriver’s browser-vendor model, or you need to distribute sessions through Selenium Grid. The deciding questions are your target browsers, runtime, headless mode and execution infrastructure—not an unsubstantiated speed ranking.

Choose based on your browser coverage needs
When Playwright is a good fit
Playwright Test can define projects for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, letting a suite exercise multiple browser engines through a consistent runner. It can also target branded Chrome and Edge channels. That distinction matters: a Chromium project is not automatically the same as testing a branded Chrome installation, and WebKit engine testing is not itself a guarantee that the test ran in branded Safari on every target operating system. Confirm the actual browser, channel and OS required by your users. See Playwright browser documentation.
When Selenium is a good fit
Selenium follows the WebDriver model, with browser-specific implementations and vendor involvement. Selenium’s documentation describes WebDriver as driving a browser natively. If your release requirements call for a specific browser-vendor implementation or an established Selenium-compatible environment, that model may align better with the infrastructure you already operate. Check the target browser’s driver and OS support rather than assuming all browser/version combinations behave identically. See WebDriver | Selenium.

Headless is not one identical browser mode
“Headless” means the browser runs without its normal visible window, but it does not identify a single browser build or implementation. A test result can depend on which engine, browser channel and headless implementation actually ran.
Playwright Chromium options
Playwright Test runs headless by default. For Chromium, the default can use a separate headless shell. To opt into Chromium’s new headless mode, configure the chromium channel. The choice is relevant when matching behavior to a browser environment matters; record the channel and browser version in CI so a change in configuration is not mistaken for an application regression. Consult Playwright’s browser notes before changing channels.
Selenium browser arguments
Selenium configures headless execution through the browser’s options. Selenium’s Chrome documentation uses --headless=new; its Firefox documentation uses -headless. These arguments are browser-specific, so do not assume that the same flag or rendering behavior applies across engines. Review the current Selenium Chrome and Selenium Firefox pages for supported configuration.
Isolation and test-runner workflow
Playwright contexts
A Playwright BrowserContext isolates cookies and other session state. Playwright Test creates isolated contexts for tests, which helps independent tests avoid sharing login state or other browser data by accident. This is useful for parallel execution: each test can begin with its own browser session rather than depending on cleanup left by another test. Isolation does not make tests independent automatically—shared databases, test accounts and application state can still conflict.

Playwright Test also provides a project model for running the suite against configured browsers and supports parallel tests. Its defaults and configuration are documented in the Playwright Test configuration guide.
Selenium sessions and frameworks
Selenium supplies WebDriver sessions; the team chooses a surrounding test framework and conventions for setup, teardown, fixtures and parallel execution. This is flexible if your organization already has those pieces. It also means runner ergonomics depend on the framework and infrastructure you select, rather than arriving as one Selenium-defined test-runner workflow.
Language, setup and maintenance
Start with the team’s supported runtime
Selenium documents language-neutral WebDriver bindings and a broader ecosystem of browser drivers. Playwright provides its own supported language libraries and runner options. Choose the framework that fits the languages, build tools and test expertise your team already maintains; the available evidence does not establish that one is inherently quicker to learn.
Account for browser and driver updates
Playwright’s browser binaries are coupled to Playwright releases. After installing or updating the package, install the matching browser binaries as required by the project’s setup instructions; otherwise, a local or CI machine may lack the browser build that release expects. Selenium Manager is used by Selenium bindings by default to manage drivers, reducing the need to manually fetch a driver for ordinary setups. It does not eliminate browser-driver compatibility requirements. Selenium’s Chrome guidance says the browser and driver major versions should match. When a session fails after a browser update, check both versions and the current Selenium guidance at Selenium’s Chrome documentation.
Scaling beyond one machine
Playwright for parallel suites and browser projects
For teams whose main scaling need is running independent tests in parallel and across configured browser projects, Playwright Test has those capabilities built into its runner. You still need to size CI workers, control shared test data and manage the time and resource costs of each browser project.
Selenium Grid for remote sessions
Selenium Grid routes WebDriver scripts to remote browser instances. It is designed for parallel and cross-platform testing, including different browser versions across machines. This is a meaningful advantage when remote execution and infrastructure control are requirements, but it also means operating or using a Grid environment. The Selenium project’s Grid documentation explains the remote execution model. There is no substantiated comparative cost figure for running Grid versus Playwright-based CI; estimate the cost using your own machine, concurrency and maintenance needs.
WebDriver BiDi: an evolving capability
Selenium documents WebDriver BiDi as a W3C bidirectional protocol developed with browser vendors. It can stream browser events such as network requests, console messages and JavaScript errors. That is relevant if event-driven browser observability matters to your automation. Protocol and browser support evolve, so verify which capabilities your chosen browser and Selenium version support before designing around them. Its existence is a capability to evaluate, not proof that Selenium is the better framework overall. See Selenium WebDriver BiDi documentation.

A practical decision checklist
- Choose Playwright if you are starting a suite and want an integrated runner, per-test isolated contexts, parallel execution and configured Chromium, Firefox and WebKit projects.
- Choose Selenium if your team already relies on WebDriver bindings, browser-specific implementations or Selenium Grid for remote sessions.
- Verify browser fidelity by writing down the exact browser brand, engine, channel, version and operating system your tests must cover.
- Verify headless mode explicitly, especially for Chromium, rather than treating every headless run as equivalent.
- Check maintenance ownership: Playwright browser binaries follow its release cadence; Selenium driver management is assisted by Selenium Manager, while browser/driver compatibility remains relevant.
- Measure your own runtime if speed is a deciding factor. Official documentation reviewed here does not provide a directly comparable benchmark.

Playwright reports that a browser executable is missing
The installed Playwright package may not have its matching browser binary available on that machine. Follow the installation instructions for the package version used by the project and install the required browsers in the local or CI environment. Avoid assuming that updating the package alone updates every machine’s cached browser.

Selenium cannot create a Chrome session
Check that the browser and driver are compatible, including the major-version match called out in Selenium’s Chrome documentation. Selenium Manager manages drivers by default through bindings, but check the installed browser, Selenium binding version and any environment-specific driver configuration when automatic management does not resolve the issue.
A test passes headed but fails headless
First confirm the engine, channel and headless implementation. For Playwright Chromium, distinguish the default headless shell from the chromium channel; for Selenium, confirm the correct browser-specific argument. Then inspect viewport-dependent behavior and application state in the failing run. Do not change the framework before ruling out a configuration mismatch.
Parallel tests interfere with each other
In Playwright, isolated BrowserContexts separate browser session data, but tests can still collide through shared accounts, databases or mutable server-side records. Give tests independent data or coordinate access to shared resources. In Selenium, review the test framework’s session lifecycle and Grid allocation so each test receives and releases the intended browser session.

Compare browser brand, version, operating system, channel and headless mode between environments. For Selenium Grid, confirm the requested capabilities match a node that is available. For Playwright projects, confirm the expected browser build is installed in the CI worker. Keep environment differences visible in logs instead of treating “Chrome” or “headless” as a complete configuration description.
Frequently asked questions
Is Playwright a replacement for Selenium?
Not in every environment. It may suit a new suite with its runner and contexts, while Selenium remains a practical choice for teams that need WebDriver implementations, established bindings or Grid-based execution.
Can Playwright test Safari?
Playwright supports WebKit projects, but WebKit engine coverage should not be described as identical to testing branded Safari on a particular operating system. Confirm the browser and OS fidelity your release policy requires.
Which one is faster?
There is no directly comparable benchmark established here. Compare the same tests, browsers, machine resources and parallelism in your own environment before making speed the deciding factor.
