A prediction, however, would not show that particular words or themes caused commercial success. Chart performance can also reflect promotion, artist recognition, label support, release timing, audience behavior, streaming activity and other factors. What can rap lyrics tell us about changing hip-hop themes?

- Label definition: specify what counted as a Billboard Top 100 appearance and the chart period used.
- Data provenance: document where lyrics came from, how duplicates and missing text were handled, and whether songs or artists crossed the training and test sets.
- Leakage controls: prevent chart-related metadata, artist names or post-release information from entering the lyric features.
