Put the tags in your page’s <head>, and start with the four base properties: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. Add a description and image details when they improve the preview, then check the rendered result with the platform tools used by your audience.

The protocol’s “The Rock” page is an illustration of the syntax, not a set of values to copy. Your title, type, canonical URL, and image must describe the actual page. Open Graph is a metadata protocol for representing a web page as a rich object in a social graph.
The four required base properties
| Property | What it controls | Implementation guidance |
|---|---|---|
og:title |
The object title shown in a shared preview. | Use the page’s clear, human-readable title; do not add unrelated keywords. |
og:type |
The object’s type in the graph. | Use article for an article, website for a general site or landing page, and a more specific protocol type when applicable. |
og:url |
The permanent identifier for the object. | Use the canonical, publicly reachable URL, normally the same URL selected by your canonical-link policy. |
og:image |
The representative image URL. | Use an absolute HTTPS URL to an image that represents this page and can be fetched without a login. |
The chosen og:type can introduce additional properties. For example, an article can provide publication details, while a movie type has media-specific fields. Do not declare a type merely because it sounds attractive; select the type that matches the object.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Recommended optional tags
The protocol describes these properties as optional and generally recommended when they apply:
og:descriptionsupplies a concise summary for the preview.og:site_nameidentifies the broader site or publication.og:localestates the page’s locale, such asen_US.og:audioandog:videoidentify accompanying media when the object actually has it.
Use the description as a useful sentence, not a duplicate of the title. Locale and media fields should reflect the page’s real content and availability.
Image metadata and multiple images
When you specify an image, the protocol documents an alternative-text property and structured image properties:
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/article.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:secure_url" content="https://example.com/images/article.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:type" content="image/jpeg">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="A diagram explaining the article’s main idea">
The 1200-by-630 values above are examples, not a universal requirement. Select dimensions and format that suit the destinations you support, and ensure the declared MIME type matches the actual response. Alternative text should describe the image for people who cannot see it.

You may declare more than one image:
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/primary.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Primary article illustration">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/alternate.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Alternate article illustration">
Put each image’s structured properties immediately after its root og:image tag. If conflicting values are supplied, the protocol gives preference to the first tag. Therefore, place your preferred image first and keep each image’s width, height, type, and alternative text adjacent to the correct root.
Choosing values for common page types
Articles and blog posts
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:title" content="How to Back Up a Laptop">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/guides/laptop-backup">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/laptop-backup.jpg">
<meta property="og:description" content="A practical backup plan for files, photos, and system recovery.">
<meta property="og:site_name" content="Example Guides">
Keep the URL stable. If the same article is available through tracking parameters, print views, or language variants, use the canonical version in og:url.
General websites and landing pages
<meta property="og:type" content="website">
<meta property="og:title" content="Example Product">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/product.jpg">
<meta property="og:description" content="The product’s short, accurate value proposition.">
Media-rich objects
Use og:video or og:audio only when the referenced media is part of the object and is accessible to the crawler. A video URL does not replace the required representative image.
Open Graph versus Twitter Cards
Open Graph and Twitter Cards are related but separate metadata layers. Google’s web.dev guidance shows Twitter Cards with name="twitter:card", whereas Open Graph uses property="og:…". If a destination documents its own card tags, add those tags in addition to OG rather than assuming one vocabulary has identical fields, image rules, cache behavior, or fallbacks everywhere.

Apple’s developer documentation also describes Open Graph metadata as a way to provide images and meaningful captions in Messages previews. Treat each platform’s published guidance as authoritative for its own renderer.
How to add OG tags safely
- Choose the final, public URL and confirm it returns the intended page without requiring a session.
- Open the server-rendered HTML template used for that page type.
- Insert the OG elements inside
<head>, not in the body or in a late client-side component that crawlers may miss. - Set the four base properties, then add description, site name, locale, media, and image details that genuinely apply.
- Use absolute URLs for
og:urlandog:image; verify HTTPS certificates, redirects, and crawler access. - Deploy, fetch the raw HTML, and search for duplicate or contradictory tags.
- Run the live URL through the preview or validation tool documented by each target platform, then refresh the page’s cached preview when that platform provides a refresh action.
Validation checklist
- The tags are present in the delivered
<head>, not only after a browser executes JavaScript. - There is one deliberate first value for each root property.
og:urlis the canonical URL and does not accidentally include a session ID.- The image URL is absolute, publicly fetchable, and returns an image with the declared content type.
- The title and description match the visible page.
- Every repeated image has its structured properties directly after the corresponding root tag.
- Platform-specific card tags are present where required.
- You have checked more than one destination if your audience shares links across several services.
Common failures and fixes
The preview shows an old title or image
Social crawlers commonly cache fetched metadata. Confirm the live HTML first, then use the destination’s documented debugger or cache-refresh control. Changing the HTML alone may not immediately change an already cached share.
No image appears
Check that og:image is an absolute URL, responds without authentication, is not blocked by robots or a firewall, and returns the expected image content type. Inspect redirects and certificate errors from an external network.
The wrong image is selected
Move the preferred og:image before alternatives and place its structured properties directly below it. Remove duplicate tags emitted by a theme, plugin, or framework layout.

The URL identifies the wrong page
Replace tracking, pagination, or preview URLs with the page’s canonical public URL. Make sure redirects do not lead to a different language, login screen, or error page.
Tags are missing from “view source”
Your framework may be adding them only after hydration, or a different template may be serving the route. Add metadata in the server-rendered head and inspect the actual HTTP response, not just the post-rendered DOM.
A platform still renders differently
OG is not a promise that every network or messenger uses identical fields. Add that platform’s documented card vocabulary and validate with its own tooling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance, reliability, and privacy considerations
OG tags add negligible response size, but the image request is part of preview generation. Serve a correctly sized, compressed image from a reliable HTTPS host, avoid URLs that expire, and do not put private information in titles, descriptions, or image URLs. Keep metadata generation deterministic so the same canonical URL does not produce different previews for different crawler requests.

If you need a screenshot of the page itself while checking a preview, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
One-call cURL example (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/guides/laptop-backup -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/guides/laptop-backup"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/guides/laptop-backup' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
It also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Open Graph tags replace the HTML title and meta description?
No. Keep a normal HTML <title> and an appropriate standard description for search and browser contexts; OG fields serve social-object previews.
Can I use a relative URL in og:image?
Use an absolute, publicly reachable URL. Relative paths make crawler resolution dependent on context and can fail outside a normal browser page.
Should every page use og:type of website?
No. Choose the type that describes the object, such as article for an article, and follow any additional properties required by that type.
