The main choices are shared tables, a PostgreSQL schema per tenant, a database per tenant, or horizontal sharding. There is no universally best option: isolation needs, operations, cost, performance, and cross-tenant workflows determine the right fit.
What multi-tenancy means in a Rails app
In a multi-tenant app, organizations share an application, but each organization’s records and tenant-specific behavior must remain bounded to that organization. Tenant identity is not just a controller concern: it must be resolved reliably and enforced through every relevant data path. AWS describes tenant isolation as a core responsibility for SaaS providers.
White labeling is related but distinct. It means presenting tenant-specific branding or behavior—such as a customer’s name, logo, or enabled features—within the shared product. It does not, by itself, isolate records or authorize access. Treat tenant configuration as tenant-owned data, and apply the same authorization discipline used for other tenant records.
Choose a data layout
Rails applications commonly use one of four patterns. AWS characterizes PostgreSQL approaches as pool, bridge, and silo models; Rails also supports horizontal sharding. The table compares their basic boundaries, not guaranteed security or performance outcomes.

| Pattern | Where tenant data lives | Isolation boundary | Main operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared tables (pool) | Common tables; tenant-owned rows carry a tenant identifier. | Application scoping; PostgreSQL row-level security (RLS) can add database-enforced row filtering. AWS describes the pool model and RLS. | Shared schema and infrastructure simplify common operations, but every access path must preserve tenant scope. Cross-tenant queries may be straightforward when explicitly authorized. |
| Schema per tenant (bridge) | Separate PostgreSQL schemas within a database. | Logical separation within a shared database environment. Apartment documents schema-level tenancy; AWS describes a bridge model. | Tenant routing and migrations must account for multiple schemas. Schemas are not separate database infrastructure. |
| Database per tenant (silo) | Each tenant has a separate database. | Separate database resources provide a stronger resource boundary than shared tables or schemas. AWS describes silo-style isolation. | Provisioning, migrations, backups, and operations multiply as databases are added. Tenant-specific database operation is possible. |
| Tenant-based horizontal sharding | The same schema is distributed across database shards; tenants are routed to a shard. | Shard selection determines which database handles the request; it does not replace tenant authorization within the application. | Rails requires app-specific tenant-to-shard resolution. Connection counts and operational overhead matter as database counts grow. |
These patterns are not interchangeable security guarantees. The effective boundary depends on configuration, application behavior, and the team’s ability to operate and test the design. AWS’s model guidance and the Apartment documentation describe trade-offs rather than a universal winner.
How to decide which pattern fits
- Isolation and customer obligations: Start with contractual, regulatory, data-residency, and dedicated-environment requirements. If those require a separate database or environment, a pooled table design may not meet the requirement.
- Cost and operating capacity: Account for tenant provisioning, migrations, backups, monitoring, and database connections. More separate resources can strengthen boundaries but add operational work.
- Performance isolation: Consider whether a busy tenant could affect others and whether dedicated resources are needed. Actual outcomes depend on workload and configuration; no tenant-count threshold or performance percentage is established by the cited guidance.
- Data workflows: Identify cross-tenant reporting, shared reference data, and joins before choosing a layout. Shared tables keep data in one database; separate databases or shards require a deliberate approach to cross-database work.
- Team capability: Choose mechanisms the team can reliably route, migrate, monitor, and test. A theoretically stronger boundary is not useful if operations routinely bypass it.
Resolve tenant identity before accessing tenant data
- Authenticate the user. Establish who is making the request before selecting a tenant.
- Authorize membership or host mapping. Resolve the tenant from a trusted authenticated membership or a host-to-tenant mapping. Do not accept a client-supplied tenant identifier as authority without checking that the user is allowed to act for that tenant.
- Set the request’s tenant context. Make the selected tenant available consistently to the data-access layer and tenant-specific configuration. Avoid scattered, optional filters that individual controllers can forget.
- Keep tenant selection stable. If using Rails tenant-based horizontal sharding, implement the tenant-to-shard resolver in the application. The Rails Active Record guide recommends `lock: true` for tenant-based shard selection so code cannot switch tenants during a request.
- Apply tenant-aware data rules. Scope reads and writes, and make uniqueness constraints tenant-aware when the same value may legitimately appear in different customers’ records.
Add database enforcement to pooled PostgreSQL tables
With shared tables, application scoping is essential, but a missed filter can expose another tenant’s rows. PostgreSQL row-level security (RLS) can add a database-level guard. AWS’s guidance describes setting a tenant-specific runtime context, such as app.current_tenant, and writing policies that compare that context with each row’s tenant identifier.

- Apply policies to all tables containing tenant data, not only the most visible business tables.
- Set the tenant context reliably for each database operation; a policy cannot protect correctly if the application leaves the context unset or incorrect.
- Configure database roles and policies so RLS actually applies to the application’s queries.
- Test that a tenant can access its own rows and is denied access to another tenant’s rows.
RLS is an additional enforcement layer, not a substitute for correct tenant resolution, authorization, or testing. AWS’s technical discussion of PostgreSQL RLS focuses on database policy and runtime context; application-specific configuration still matters.
Enforce the boundary beyond controller queries
A tenant filter on a page’s main query does not prove that the whole application is isolated. Review each path that can read, write, cache, export, index, or administer tenant data.

- Background jobs: Pass an authorized tenant identity or tenant-scoped record, then establish the right context when the job runs. Jobs may execute long after the originating request ends.
- Exports and reporting: Scope source records before generating files or aggregate results. Treat broad, cross-tenant reporting as a separately authorized operation.
- Search indexes and caches: Include tenant boundaries in indexing, lookup, and cache-key design so one customer’s result cannot be returned to another.
- Files and object storage: Enforce tenant-aware authorization when assigning and retrieving stored objects; a tenant boundary in the relational database alone does not automatically protect files.
- Admin tools: Make cross-tenant access explicit, authorized, and auditable rather than letting operational interfaces bypass ordinary scope rules.
- Database constraints and indexes: Include tenant identifiers where appropriate, especially for tenant-local uniqueness and common tenant-scoped lookups.
These checks follow from the isolation requirement across application and storage layers. They are implementation guidance, not a claim that any particular Rails app or setup has been tested.

Shared tables
A shared schema avoids maintaining a schema copy for every tenant, but each tenant-owned table needs a clear tenant key and a reliable access path. Changes to that schema affect all tenants, so migration rollout and compatibility remain important.

Separate schemas
Schema-per-tenant can suit designs seeking logical separation in one PostgreSQL database, including some retrofits or deployments with fewer, higher-value tenants, as the Apartment project documentation describes. Account for schema selection and the work of applying and verifying migrations across tenant schemas. Because the schemas remain in one database environment, do not treat them as fully isolated infrastructure.
Separate databases or shards
Per-tenant databases and sharding can support stronger resource separation or tenant-specific database operations, but require reliable routing and more database operations. Rails sharding distributes the same schema across shards; the app must decide which shard serves a tenant. Consider connection management as the number of databases grows.

Their repository documentation does not establish security or compatibility with every Rails version. Check current maintenance and compatibility against the Rails version and database setup you intend to run.
Test tenant isolation as a boundary
Build automated tests around at least two tenants, including users with different memberships. Test the boundary across ordinary requests and less visible execution paths, rather than testing only that a happy-path page loads.
Quick Recap
- Verify a user can read and change permitted records for their tenant.
- Verify the same user cannot retrieve or mutate another tenant’s records by changing an identifier, host, or request parameter.
- Exercise background jobs, exports, search, cache lookups, and administrative access.
- For RLS, test both allowed same-tenant access and denied cross-tenant access using the application’s actual database role and policies.
- For sharding, verify tenant-to-shard routing and ensure tenant selection remains locked for the request.
