NConvert is XnView Software’s command-line tool for converting and editing images in batches. It is designed for repeatable jobs you can run from a terminal or script, rather than a primarily graphical workflow. Its official guide documents format conversion, resizing, output naming, numbered image sequences, and script files; the options available to you depend on the build and platform you install.
What NConvert does
NConvert processes image files from the command line. XnView Software describes it as supporting more than 500 image formats, exporting to about 70 formats, and offering more than 80 commands. Those are the vendor’s published figures, not independent compatibility or performance test results. The product page also lists tools for metadata editing, rotation, cropping, resizing, brightness, contrast and saturation adjustments, filters such as blur and sharpen, and effects including masks, watermarks and vignettes: NConvert product page.
The practical advantage is repeatability: once a command or script describes a job, you can apply the same conversion or edits to many files without repeating each operation by hand. That makes NConvert a fit for command-line users and workflows that need to run the same image-processing steps regularly.
How to use NConvert
Download the package for your operating system from the official NConvert downloads, then use the executable included in that package. The examples below describe documented command patterns, not a guarantee that every option or format is present in every build.

- Check the installed build’s options. Run
nconvert -helpin a terminal. The official guide recommends the help output as the reference for available options; check it rather than assuming an online example applies unchanged to your version and platform. - Choose an output format. Use the
-outoption to specify the target format for a set of files. Add the input files and output naming options appropriate to the job. The guide includes conversion examples and output-name patterns, but the exact syntax should be checked against your installed help. - Resize images where needed. NConvert’s documented workflows include resizing and proportional sizing. Consult the help output for the build-specific resize options and choose dimensions that preserve the proportions you need.
- Handle sequences and filenames deliberately. The guide demonstrates processing numbered image sequences and using
#in an output pattern for numbering. Confirm the pattern before processing a large batch so the resulting names suit your workflow. - Move repeated instructions into a script. Put multiple sets of conversion instructions in a text file and pass that file to NConvert. This is useful when a job involves several groups of files or needs to be run again later; follow the script-file syntax shown in the official NConvert guide.
Check platform and format compatibility
The product page’s broad format count does not mean that every format feature works on every operating system. The official guide says the text-add feature uses the Win32 API and is available only on Win32; it also notes that some unusual formats require external DLLs and are available only on Win32. Verify the particular feature and input/output formats against the help and package for your platform before building a workflow around them.
The guide also warns that very large images or substantial upscaling can require considerable memory and may not work. If a batch fails, try a smaller set or less demanding image dimensions to determine whether memory pressure is involved.

XnView lists Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and several legacy platforms, but platform packages do not necessarily share the same build or feature set. Choose from the official downloads for your operating system and check the archive if you need an older package.
Which NConvert version should you download?
Version references vary by page and platform, so avoid treating a single version number as universal. The product page displays NConvert 7.300, and the archive lists Windows 7.300 packages dated August 14, 2026. The official forum index also shows a September 2, 2026 user report titled “NConvert 7.301 – conversion of *.avif is broken.” That forum listing establishes that 7.301 was discussed, not that it is the latest release for every platform or that the reported issue applies to all builds. Check the official downloads, archive and NConvert forum for the package and release information relevant to your system.

Is NConvert free for commercial use?
No. XnView Software says NConvert is freeware for private or educational use, including nonprofit organizations, while commercial use requires a purchased license. The product page lists these terms and prices:

NConvert or a graphical batch converter?
If you want a visual interface instead of command-line instructions, XnView Software also offers XnConvert, which its product page describes as a GUI batch converter that can export to NConvert for command-line use. The products come from the same publisher, but the available information does not establish identical feature sets.

- Choose NConvert when you are comfortable with a terminal or scripts and want to specify repeatable processing instructions.
- Consider XnConvert when a graphical batch workflow better suits how you select and configure image operations.
- For either tool, check your operating system, required formats and features, and license needs rather than assuming every workflow is interchangeable.
