The change was announced for a gradual Release Preview rollout on February 17, 2026, covering Windows 11 24H2 (build 26100) and 25H2 (build 26200), including preview builds 26100.7918 and 26200.7918. Availability is phased, and Sysmon remains disabled until an administrator turns it on.
What native Sysmon does
Sysmon (System Monitor) installs a service and driver that record configurable system activity in the Windows event log. Depending on its XML configuration, it can log events such as process creation, network connections and file-creation-time changes. Administrators can forward those events through Windows Event Collection or send them to SIEM and EDR systems for investigation.
Sysmon is telemetry, not a security product that makes decisions by itself. Microsoft says it does not analyze the events it generates, create alerts, block activity or conceal its presence from attackers. Detection and response come from the people and tools that consume the events. As Microsoft Learn puts it, “Sysmon doesn’t analyze the events it generates, nor does it attempt to conceal its presence from attackers.”
When the built-in feature is available
The February 17, 2026 Windows Insider Blog announcement describes a gradual Release Preview rollout for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. Those version labels correspond to build families 26100 and 26200; the announcement specifically names Release Preview builds 26100.7918 and 26200.7918. A device on one of those versions may still not show the feature immediately because Microsoft is phasing availability. Check Optional features on the individual device before assuming it is missing or generally available.

How to enable Sysmon in Windows 11
Sysmon is off by default. Use an elevated account and first remove any separately installed Sysinternals copy; Microsoft does not support built-in and standalone Sysmon together on one device.
Settings
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Optional features.
- Select More Windows features.
- Enable Sysmon and apply the change.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt and run
sysmon -ito install and start the service.

In an elevated Command Prompt, enable the optional feature with:

Dism /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:SysmonThen initialize Sysmon:

Microsoft Learn also documents this elevated PowerShell command:
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName SysmonRun sysmon -i afterward to install and start the service. If the feature is not listed, confirm that the device is running a supported Windows 11 release and that the phased rollout has reached it.

Configure and verify the event stream
Sysmon’s XML configuration determines which event types are recorded and which are filtered. A broad, unoptimized policy can generate a large event volume, so Microsoft recommends reviewing and testing a configuration before deploying it widely. Start with the events your investigation or monitoring pipeline actually uses, then measure volume and storage impact.
Verify that events are arriving in Event Viewer at Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Sysmon > Operational. From there, validate event IDs and fields against the XML data before connecting production collectors. Sysmon data can be forwarded with Windows Event Collection or consumed by SIEM and EDR platforms, where correlation and alerting occur.

Important localization caveat
On the built-in edition, rendered event messages follow the language configured on the Windows device. The underlying XML event data remains consistent. International deployments should therefore parse structured XML fields rather than matching displayed message text. A collector or rule set that depends on English-rendered strings may need adjustment on non-English devices.

Choose one edition per device. Before enabling the Windows feature, uninstall the standalone service and confirm that the old installation is no longer active.

Updates, configuration retention and rollout planning
Microsoft says built-in Sysmon binaries are updated through standard Windows quality updates. During feature updates, the binaries can be updated even while Sysmon is disabled. When Sysmon is enabled, its configuration is preserved through the described transition and no restart is required for that transition.
Because the initial release is a preview rollout, pilot it on representative devices first. Confirm that the expected events appear, check event volume, test forwarding and adjust XML exclusions before broad deployment. Treat the Windows update cadence and your SIEM or EDR parsing rules as one operational change rather than assuming the feature is a drop-in replacement for every existing standalone installation.
What this change does—and does not—change
- It simplifies deployment: supported Windows 11 devices can obtain Sysmon as an OS feature instead of a separate download.
- It does not turn Sysmon into prevention: Sysmon records activity; downstream tools and analysts must identify and respond to threats.
- It does not remove configuration work: XML rules still determine coverage, filtering and event volume.
- It does not permit side-by-side editions: remove standalone Sysmon before enabling the built-in feature.
- It does not guarantee immediate availability: the February 2026 announcement describes phased Release Preview delivery.
Bottom line
Native Sysmon gives Windows 11 administrators a Microsoft-serviced way to collect the same kind of configurable system telemetry that has traditionally required the Sysinternals download. Enable it only after checking device eligibility, removing any standalone copy, choosing and testing an XML policy, and confirming that your event pipeline handles localized rendered messages by relying on structured event data.
