Microsoft announced spellcheck and autocorrect for Windows 11 Notepad on March 21, 2024. The feature began as a Windows Insider rollout, adding red spelling underlines, correction suggestions, and automatic fixes for common typing mistakes. Microsoft later reported that Notepad version 11.2402.22.0 had started rolling out to Beta and Release Preview channels on April 9, 2024.
Microsoft’s published updates do not establish whether these features are now available to every Windows 11 user. Check your installed Notepad version and current Windows rollout information before assuming the controls are present.
What spellcheck does in Notepad
Notepad underlines misspelled words in red and offers replacement suggestions. To correct a flagged word, click or tap it and choose a suggestion. With the word focused, you can also press Shift+F10 to open the suggestions menu.
You can ignore a word for the current document or add it to Notepad’s dictionary. Microsoft says spellcheck supports multiple languages.

How autocorrect works
Autocorrect fixes common typing mistakes while you type. Microsoft describes it as an automatic correction feature, not as a full grammar checker, rewriting assistant, or measured replacement for dedicated writing software. The announcement does not provide an accuracy rate, correction count, or productivity study.
Why spellcheck may be missing in some files
Spellcheck is enabled by default for some file types, but it is disabled by default for log files and other types Microsoft associates with coding. That means ordinary prose may show spelling marks while a log or code-oriented document does not.

Notepad lets you change the behavior globally, for individual file types, or temporarily for the current file through the context menu. If no red underlines appear, check the file type and the spellcheck controls in Notepad settings before assuming the feature is unavailable.
How to turn on spellcheck and autocorrect
Microsoft’s announcement places both controls in Notepad settings and also describes a temporary per-file option in the context menu. The exact labels can vary with the installed Notepad build.

- Open Notepad settings. Look for the spellcheck and autocorrect controls.
- Enable spellcheck if you want misspelled words underlined and suggestions displayed.
- Enable autocorrect if you want common typing mistakes replaced as you type.
- Check the current file’s context menu if you need to override the setting temporarily for that document.
- Type a test sentence containing an intentional typo to confirm that the installed build applies the feature.
When the feature may not be available
- The documented initial rollout targeted Windows Insider Canary and Dev channels.
- Microsoft’s April 9, 2024 update said Notepad version 11.2402.22.0 had begun rolling out to Beta and Release Preview channels.
- The newer official Notepad update published January 21, 2026 discusses other improvements and does not confirm general availability of spellcheck or autocorrect.
Therefore, a Windows 11 installation can lack these controls even when the operating system itself is up to date. Availability depends on the Notepad app build and Microsoft’s rollout status.

What this update means for Windows 11 users
The change gives Notepad basic spelling assistance without requiring a separate writing application. It is especially useful for short notes and plain-text drafts, while users working in logs or code files may need to enable spellcheck deliberately. Because Microsoft announced the feature through the Insider program and has not confirmed current broad availability in the cited updates, verify the feature in your own Notepad installation rather than treating it as guaranteed on every Windows 11 PC.
