For most applications, start with the browser runtime you already use: Puppeteer and Playwright both load HTML, apply print CSS, and expose a PDF method. Choose Prince when your documents depend on dedicated paged-media publishing features such as generated page regions, footnotes, and print-oriented composition. There is no universal winner; the right library depends on whether browser-faithful rendering, print layout, or a specialized publishing pipeline matters most.
What an HTML-to-PDF library actually does
An HTML-to-PDF library turns a document and its CSS into a paginated PDF. In a browser-based workflow, your code starts a browser, creates a page, navigates to a URL (or sets HTML directly), waits for required assets, and calls the page’s PDF API. Puppeteer and Playwright document PDF generation with the print CSS media type by default. That means a design that looks correct on screen can legitimately produce a different PDF.
Before selecting a package, decide which rendering relationship you need:
- Browser fidelity: client-side JavaScript, web fonts, modern layout, and the same engine used by your web application.
- Print composition: controlled page size, margins, running content, page breaks, footnotes, and other paged-media behavior.
- Operational fit: your language runtime, deployment image, security policy, licensing review, and maintenance process.
Shortlist at a glance
| Option | Rendering model | Documented controls | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puppeteer | Chromium page rendered through the print pipeline | Paper format, headers and footers, print CSS, screen-media emulation, background/color controls | Node.js teams already using Puppeteer |
| Playwright | Browser page rendered through the print pipeline | Format or dimensions, margins, headers and footers, backgrounds, page ranges, CSS page-size preference, tagged-PDF configuration, media emulation | Teams standardized on Playwright or needing its documented PDF options |
| Prince | Dedicated Web Standards to PDF converter | Paged-media features, generated page content, footnotes, graphics, scripting, and server integration | Print-heavy publishing and archive workflows |
This table describes documented APIs and product capabilities, not a comparative benchmark. Rendering speed, deployment size, licensing cost, standards coverage, and maintenance should be verified against current official documentation and your own representative files.

Generate a PDF with Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s current API documents Page.pdf() as using print CSS media. The guide’s basic flow is launch, create a page, navigate, and write the returned PDF bytes. It also documents waiting for fonts by default.
Minimal Node.js example
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com/report', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.pdf({
path: 'report.pdf',
format: 'A4',
printBackground: true,
margin: { top: '18mm', right: '15mm', bottom: '18mm', left: '15mm' },
displayHeaderFooter: true,
headerTemplate: '',
footerTemplate: 'Page of ',
preferCSSPageSize: true
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Use preferCSSPageSize when your stylesheet defines an explicit @page size. If the PDF should look like the screen version, call await page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf(). Otherwise, write print-specific rules such as @media print and inspect the output.
Print CSS essentials
@page {
size: A4;
margin: 18mm 15mm;
}
@media print {
.no-print { display: none !important; }
h1, h2 { break-after: avoid; }
table { break-inside: auto; }
tr { break-inside: avoid; }
}
Colors may be modified for printing by default. If brand colors or background panels are important, test them in the generated PDF and enable the relevant background option.
Generate a PDF with Playwright
Playwright’s page.pdf() returns a PDF buffer and uses print CSS media. Its API documents paper format or explicit dimensions, margins, header and footer templates, background printing, CSS page-size preference, page ranges, and tagged-PDF configuration.

Minimal Node.js example
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import { writeFile } from 'node:fs/promises';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com/report', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const pdf = await page.pdf({
format: 'A4',
printBackground: true,
margin: { top: '18mm', right: '15mm', bottom: '18mm', left: '15mm' },
displayHeaderFooter: true,
headerTemplate: '',
footerTemplate: 'Page of ',
preferCSSPageSize: true,
tagged: true
});
await writeFile('report.pdf', pdf);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
To deliberately render screen styles, use await page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }) before calling page.pdf(). Use pageRanges when an export should contain only selected pages. Header and footer templates run in a restricted context, so keep them self-contained and style them inline.
When Prince is the better fit
Prince describes itself as “a powerful converter from Web Standards to PDF: HTML/Markdown and XML, styled with CSS, are seamlessly transformed into documents you can print, download and archive.” Its guide documents HTML, Markdown, XHTML, XML, SVG, CSS, JavaScript/ECMAScript, and common image formats, along with paged-media features, generated page content, footnotes, graphics, scripting, server-side integration, and a Prince for Books project.
That feature set is relevant when page composition is the product: books, invoices with strict running headers, long technical manuals, or archival documents. It is a vendor-documented capability description, not proof that Prince will be faster or more standards-complete for your files. Confirm licensing, supported CSS, deployment method, and accessibility output with current Prince materials before committing.
Where WeasyPrint and wkhtmltopdf fit
The stable WeasyPrint documentation landing page identifies version 70.0, but the available material here does not establish a detailed current feature comparison. The retrieved official wkhtmltopdf page likewise does not establish current release or maintenance details. Avoid relying on unsourced claims that either tool is deprecated, faster, smaller, or supports a particular CSS subset. Check the versioned official documentation and release information for your target deployment.

Validate with real documents before rollout
A hello-world page proves almost nothing about production output. Build a small fixture set from your application and inspect the PDFs visually and, where required, with an accessibility checker.
- Long tables: verify row splitting, repeated headings, and whether an individual row is kept together.
- Page breaks: test headings, figures, callouts, and explicit
break-beforeorbreak-insiderules. - Fonts: wait for web fonts, check that every weight is embedded or available, and test missing-font fallback.
- Images: include high-resolution, transparent, remote, and lazy-loaded images; confirm they are loaded before capture.
- Headers and footers: inspect the first, middle, and final pages, including page numbers and long titles.
- Dynamic content: freeze time and data where necessary, wait for the application’s ready selector, and make sure client-side charts have finished drawing.
- Accessibility: verify reading order, headings, links, language metadata, and tagged output against your legal or internal requirements.
Deployment, reliability, and cost checks
Browser libraries require a compatible browser binary and enough CPU and memory for concurrent pages. Decide whether browsers are installed during image build or supplied by the runtime, and pin versions so a browser update does not silently change pagination. Reuse a controlled browser process where appropriate, but isolate untrusted URLs and limit navigation, file access, and outbound requests.
For every candidate, verify current license terms, commercial-use rights, container support, security advisories, release cadence, and language bindings. The documentation cited here does not establish comparative prices, performance, uptime, or total ownership cost. Measure those in your environment rather than copying a generic ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common failures
The PDF is blank or missing late content
Cause: capture occurred before client-side rendering completed. Fix: wait for a specific application selector, use an appropriate navigation wait condition, and add a bounded delay only for content with no reliable readiness signal.

Screen colors or layout differ
Cause: PDF generation uses print media and may alter colors for printing. Fix: add print rules, enable background printing, or emulate screen media when that is the intentional output.
Fonts or images are absent
Cause: blocked network requests, cross-origin restrictions, or capture before assets finish loading. Fix: make asset URLs reachable from the converter, wait for document.fonts.ready and image completion where necessary, and log failed requests.
Headers overlap document content
Cause: header/footer templates do not reserve enough space. Fix: increase top or bottom margins and keep template CSS inline.
Pagination changes after an upgrade
Cause: browser or converter rendering changes. Fix: pin versions, retain representative PDF fixtures, and review diffs during dependency upgrades.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output without you packaging a browser. For a PDF-capable capture endpoint, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed as clean shots, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Final decision
Prototype with Puppeteer or Playwright if your HTML is an interactive browser page and your team already operates that runtime. Move to Prince when paged-media publishing controls, rather than browser execution, define success. Whichever route you choose, make the decision from representative PDFs, current versioned documentation, and a completed security, licensing, and accessibility review.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Puppeteer and Playwright create PDFs with screen CSS by default?
No. Their documented PDF APIs use print CSS media by default; explicitly emulate screen media when that is the desired result.
Can I use CSS @page rules with browser PDF APIs?
Yes. Define the page size and margins in CSS and enable the API’s CSS page-size preference when your chosen library documents that option.
Is Prince a browser automation library?
No. Prince is a dedicated Web Standards-to-PDF converter designed around paged-media publishing rather than controlling a browser page.
What should I test before shipping generated PDFs?
Test long tables, page breaks, fonts, images, headers and footers, dynamic content, and accessibility on documents representative of production.
