A computer can use a 4Kn hard drive only if the operating system, firmware, controller, drivers, and drive model all support it. For Windows boot, Microsoft says 4Kn drives are supported on UEFI-based computers only. Before buying or deploying one, identify the drive’s sector format and verify the complete system configuration.
What 4Kn means—and how it differs from 512e
A 4Kn drive reports 4096-byte logical sectors and has 4096-byte physical sectors. A 512e drive also has 4096-byte physical sectors, but presents 512-byte logical sectors to software. The “e” means emulated: the drive presents smaller logical sectors while working with larger physical sectors.

Sector format can affect compatibility with operating systems, controllers, older applications, backup utilities, and specialized storage appliances. A drive’s product title alone may not clearly identify its reported sector sizes, so check the specifications or query the installed drive.
How to check the sector format in Windows
On a Windows NTFS volume, open Command Prompt and run fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo C:, replacing C: with the drive letter you want to inspect. Read the bytes-per-sector values in the output. Microsoft documents the command and sector-format distinctions in its Advanced format disk compatibility update.

The command reports information for an NTFS volume; it does not establish whether the machine’s firmware, controller, or applications support using that drive in every role.
Windows operating-system and boot compatibility
Windows version support
Microsoft documents full inbox support for 4Kn beginning with Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, including installation and boot scenarios. That does not mean every computer running those releases will boot from any 4Kn disk: Microsoft’s deployment guidance limits Windows 4Kn support to UEFI-based computers. UEFI and partition setup
If Windows will boot from the drive, confirm that the system is configured for UEFI boot and that the intended partition layout meets Microsoft’s requirements. Microsoft specifies a 260 MB minimum size for the relevant FAT32 partition on a 4Kn system, reflecting FAT32’s sector-count limitation. Do not assume a partition layout that worked on a 512-byte logical-sector disk will be suitable unchanged.
Older software and devices
Even when Windows recognizes a 4Kn disk, older applications, backup tools, hardware, or appliances may make assumptions about 512-byte sectors. Microsoft warns that applications and hardware can encounter performance or reliability issues with large-sector drives. Check with the vendor of any software or device that reads, writes, images, or boots from the disk.

What to verify for RAID or server use
For a RAID or server installation, drive compatibility is a property of the whole storage path—not just the disk. Intel’s guidance for its RAID controllers calls for checking the operating system, controller, system-board validation, firmware, RAID driver, and exact drive model. Review the applicable Intel support guidance for 4Kn and 512e Advanced Format disks and the support lists for the specific platform.
- Confirm the controller and RAID firmware support 4Kn drives in the intended configuration.
- Confirm the operating system and RAID driver are supported together.
- Check whether the exact drive model has been validated for the board, controller, and backplane.
- Do not mix Advanced Format and other drive technologies in one RAID array or hot-swappable backplane unless the vendor explicitly validates that configuration; Intel warns against such mixing.
A system that can see a drive as a standalone disk is not necessarily validated to boot from it, add it to an existing array, or hot-swap it through a particular backplane.

Performance and workload trade-offs
4Kn is not automatically faster, and 512e is not automatically slower. A write that is not aligned to a 4K physical sector can force a 512e drive to read the sector, modify the relevant data, and write it back. That read-modify-write behavior can add work. With aligned writes, modern workloads may avoid that penalty; actual results depend on the workload and the complete storage stack.
Seagate describes 4Kn as useful for hardware RAID or data-center environments designed around 4K sectors. It also notes that 512e can preserve compatibility with software that writes in units smaller than 4096 bytes. Consult the drive maker’s explanation of formatting and sector sizes when choosing between formats for a particular workload.

Can you switch a drive between 512e and 4Kn?
Not necessarily. Seagate notes that sector-size switching is not supported by every drive. Check the documentation for the exact model and any supported formatting utility before planning to change its format. The available documentation does not establish a universal, non-destructive conversion method, so make and verify a backup before changing disk formats or sector-size settings.
