Yes. Azure Linux is the current public name for Microsoft’s CBL-Mariner/Mariner Linux distribution family, not an unrelated operating system. The names overlap because Microsoft introduced the Azure Linux name in stages: the AKS container host became generally available in 2023, the 3.0 release was proposed under the Azure Linux name later that year, and Azure Linux 3.0 reached general availability in August 2024.
What changed when Microsoft renamed CBL-Mariner?
CBL-Mariner was the name used in Microsoft’s earlier cloud and edge documentation. Azure Linux is the customer-facing name now used for the newer release line and managed Azure scenarios. Microsoft’s documentation still uses compatibility wording such as “Azure Linux (CBL-Mariner),” making clear that the names refer to the same distribution family.
The change unfolded over time rather than as a single rename announcement:
- On May 23, 2023, Microsoft announced general availability of the Azure Linux container host for Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), after its earlier preview under the CBL-Mariner codename. Microsoft’s AKS announcement.
- On October 20, 2023, Azure Linux maintainer Muhammad Falak R Wani wrote that the 3.0 release was proposed to be called Azure Linux. The maintainer’s release discussion.
- Microsoft later identified Azure Linux 3.0 as generally available in August 2024. Microsoft Azure Tools Blog.
That sequence explains why current Azure documentation and tools may use Azure Linux while older images, package references, or version 2.0 material still say CBL-Mariner or Mariner.

What is Azure Linux used for?
Microsoft describes Azure Linux as a lightweight Linux platform for Azure cloud and edge products and services. Its most visible customer-facing deployment is the Azure Linux container host for AKS, which Microsoft presents as a lightweight, secure, and reliable host optimized for Azure container workloads. Microsoft’s announcement of AKS general availability.
For an AKS user, the key practical distinction is the version and deployment context, not the older versus newer name alone. Check the cluster’s node image and the supported version guidance before planning a change.

How do Azure Linux and Mariner versions map?
Microsoft documentation maps CBL-Mariner 2.0 to Azure Linux 3.0. This is a mapping across release generations, not a statement that a 2.0 installation silently becomes 3.0 when the label changes. Verify the actual node image, package source, and product support status in your environment.
| Label or release | What it means |
|---|---|
| CBL-Mariner / Mariner 2.0 | Older release line, still encountered in legacy images and documentation. |
| Azure Linux 3.0 | Newer release line under Azure Linux branding; Microsoft identifies it as the successor mapping for CBL-Mariner 2.0. |
In Azure CLI, Microsoft’s migration notice identifies version 2.74.0 as the final Azure CLI version supporting Azure Linux/Mariner 2.0 and recommends moving to 3.0. Microsoft also said AKS support for 2.0 was aligned through November 2025. Because these dates and compatibility rules can change by product, consult the relevant current service documentation before an upgrade. Azure CLI on Azure Linux 3.0.

What should users know about support and security?
Microsoft’s Azure Tools Blog says major Azure Linux versions receive support for three years after general availability. It projected Azure Linux 3.0 end of life for summer 2027; treat that as a published projection, not a guarantee that supersedes updated lifecycle guidance. The same source dates Azure Linux 3.0 general availability to August 2024. Microsoft Azure Tools Blog.
Older package support has its own timeline: the Microsoft Linux Package Repositories README says Mariner 1.0 package support ended October 17, 2024. That date concerns Mariner 1.0 packages specifically and should not be conflated with the Azure Linux 3.0 lifecycle. Microsoft Linux Package Repositories README.

Security teams can track vulnerability advisories through Microsoft’s Security Update Guide CVRF API. Microsoft announced that CBL-Mariner CVEs would begin appearing there on January 11, 2023; records identify the owning CVE Numbering Authority, and Microsoft advised users who did not want those advisories to filter records tagged “Managed by Mariner.” Microsoft Security Response Center notice.

Do not treat the naming change itself as an instruction to replace a working system. Consider migration when your Azure product or management tool no longer supports the older release, or when you need the newer release line. Before changing production nodes or images:

- Identify the exact OS release and image tag in use; a legacy label may refer to Mariner 2.0 rather than Azure Linux 3.0.
- Check current support dates for the specific Azure service, CLI, or package repository you rely on.
- Validate application, container, and operational compatibility on the target Azure Linux release.
- Plan and test the rollout using the migration guidance for that service, and confirm security-advisory ingestion continues to cover the packages you deploy.
The available Microsoft material establishes Azure Linux’s AKS role, version relationship, security-feed handling, and lifecycle policy. It does not provide a neutral performance benchmark against other AKS node operating systems, so the name change alone is not evidence of a performance advantage.
