The Indian rupee sign is ₹. Its Unicode code point is U+20B9, so it is a real text character—not the same thing as typing Rs or relying on a font-specific symbol.
The quickest method depends on your device and application. On Windows, use the emoji and symbol panel with Windows + .. In Word, type 20B9 and press Alt + X. In Google Docs, use Insert → Special characters. The methods below also cover Excel, macOS, iPhone, Android, and common shortcut problems.
Quick ways to type ₹
| Device or app | Method |
|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | Press Windows + ., search for rupee, and select ₹. |
| Microsoft Word | Type 20B9, then press Alt + X. |
| Google Docs | Choose Insert → Special characters, search for rupee, and click ₹. |
| macOS | Press Control + Command + Space, search for rupee, and double-click ₹. |
| iPhone or Android | Open the symbols keyboard and look for ₹, or press and hold a currency key. |
How to type ₹ on Windows 10 or Windows 11
Method 1: Use the Windows symbol panel
- Click where you want to insert the symbol—for example, in a browser text box, email, Word document, or spreadsheet.
- Press Windows + . (period), or press Windows + ; (semicolon).
- In the panel that opens, select the symbols section if necessary.
- Type
rupeein the search box. - Click ₹ to insert it.
This is generally the most portable built-in Windows method because it does not require changing your keyboard layout. You can also copy this symbol directly: ₹.
Method 2: Use Character Map
Character Map is useful when the symbol panel is unavailable or you want to choose a particular font.

- Select ₹ in the character list.
- Click Select, then Copy.
- Paste it into the target application with Ctrl + V.
If ₹ does not appear, change the font. A missing character in Character Map or a box displayed after pasting usually indicates a font or rendering problem, not an incorrect code point.
Method 3: Use an Indian keyboard layout
With a compatible Indian keyboard layout active, Ctrl + Alt + 4 or AltGr + 4 may produce ₹. This is not a universal Windows shortcut. It depends on the selected input layout, the application, and sometimes the physical keyboard.
To add an Indian language or layout, open Windows language settings, choose Add a preferred language, search for English (India), and follow the installation prompts. The exact Settings labels can differ between Windows releases. You can switch layouts from the language indicator on the taskbar.
A standard US or UK keyboard normally has no dedicated printed ₹ key. The software layout—not the keycap printing—determines what a shortcut produces.

Insert it from Word’s Symbol menu
- Open the Insert tab.
- Choose Symbol → More Symbols.
- Select a font containing the rupee sign.
- Find and select ₹.

Create a Word AutoCorrect shortcut
If you type the symbol regularly, create a replacement such as rupee or inr.
- Go to File → Options → Proofing.
- Click AutoCorrect Options.
- Enter your trigger in the Replace box, such as
;rupee. - Paste ₹ into the With box.
- Click Add, then OK.
Using a distinctive trigger such as ;rupee helps prevent Word from replacing an ordinary word unexpectedly.
How to type ₹ in Excel
There are two different tasks in Excel: inserting a literal character and displaying a number as Indian currency. For calculations, use currency formatting rather than typing the symbol into the value.
Format numbers as Indian rupees
- Select the cells containing the amounts.
- Open the Home tab.
- Open the Number Format dropdown.
- Choose Currency or Accounting.
- Select a rupee format such as ₹ English (India), if available.
For example, a cell containing the numeric value 12500 remains usable in formulas and totals while Excel displays it as a rupee amount. By contrast, entering ₹12500 directly can make the content text, depending on how it is entered and interpreted.

Option + 4 may work with some Indian or US keyboard layouts, but it is not a universal macOS shortcut. If it does nothing or inserts another character, check the active input source.
macOS Tahoe 26 and the ABC – India layout
On macOS Tahoe 26, reports identify a change affecting the ABC – India input source: the key that normally produces a backtick (`) may produce ₹ instead. In that layout, Option + ` is reported as a way to type a backtick.
If you need the traditional backtick behavior, switch to the standard ABC input source. The reported path is System Settings → Keyboard → Text Input → Input Sources → Edit → + → ABC (English).

| Problem | Likely reason | What to try |
|---|---|---|
Ctrl + Alt + 4 does nothing |
The active keyboard layout does not assign that shortcut to ₹. | Use the Windows symbol panel, or enable a compatible Indian layout. |
Word’s 20B9 conversion fails |
The command is being used outside Word, or the wrong text is selected. | Use it in Word and select only 20B9 before pressing Alt + X. |
| A box or question mark appears | The font or rendering environment lacks a usable ₹ glyph. | Change to a font such as Arial, Calibri, or Segoe UI. |
| ₹ appears in one application but not another | Shortcuts and font support vary by application. | Use the application’s Insert menu or paste the Unicode character. |
Alt + 8377 fails |
Windows decimal Alt codes require suitable numeric-keypad and application support. | Do not treat it as universal; use a symbol panel or application-specific method. |
| Excel treats the amount as text | The symbol was typed into the cell rather than applied as number formatting. | Enter the number by itself and apply a rupee Currency or Accounting format. |
₹ versus Rs
₹ is the Indian rupee currency symbol and is encoded as U+20B9. Rs is an abbreviation. They are not interchangeable when a document, website, database, or application requires the actual rupee-sign character.
For software and websites, store and transmit the character as Unicode U+20B9, rather than using a private-use or font-specific substitute. If the symbol renders incorrectly, investigate font support and text encoding rather than replacing it with an unrelated character.
