To make an image clickable, place the <img> element inside an <a> element. Put the page you want visitors to reach in href, the image file in src, and useful destination text in alt when the image is the link.
MDN Web Docs describes the core technique simply: “To turn an image into a link, wrap the <img> element with an <a> element.” This works in ordinary HTML and in templates used by most content systems. WordPress also provides a visual Link control for image blocks.
The basic HTML pattern
Use this complete example as a starting point:

<img src="/images/example-image.jpg" alt="Visit the destination page">
</a>Replace both example values with addresses that work on your site. The result is an image that acts as the link: clicking or tapping anywhere on the image follows the anchor.
What each attribute does
hrefis the destination address. It belongs to the<a>element.srcis the image address. It tells the browser which file to display.altis text read by assistive technology and shown when the image cannot be loaded. When the image is the only content in a link, make this text describe the destination or purpose, as useful text-link wording would.
The destination and image are independent. For example, an image at /images/pricing.jpg can link to https://example.com/pricing. Do not put the destination in src, and do not put the image URL in href.

Relative and absolute image paths
src="/images/example-image.jpg" is a relative path on your own domain. An absolute URL such as src="https://cdn.example.com/example-image.jpg" can point elsewhere. MDN’s HTML images guide recommends hosting images on a site you control in simple setups, or using a CDN in more advanced ones. Relative paths can make maintenance easier if your domain changes.
Write accessible linked-image text
A linked image needs an accessible name. If the image itself is the only content inside the anchor, its alt text should tell a nonvisual user where the link goes or what it does: alt="Read the installation guide" is more useful than alt="screenshot".
When an empty alt value can be correct
If nearby visible text already states the link’s purpose and the image adds no information, an empty alt="" can prevent redundant announcements. That decision applies to a genuinely decorative or redundant image, not to every linked image. Do not remove the alt attribute indiscriminately. MDN distinguishes decorative, informative and linked images in its <img> reference and HTML images guide.
Keep the link target clear
Describe the action or destination rather than the appearance of the picture. For a product image linking to a product page, use text such as alt="View the Alpine backpack". If a caption or adjacent text already says “Alpine backpack,” avoid making a screen reader hear the same wording twice.
Make an image clickable in WordPress
These steps apply to the WordPress block editor’s Image block, not automatically to every CMS or page builder:

- Open the post or page in the WordPress editor.
- Click the image block you want to make clickable.
- Choose the Link control in the block toolbar.
- Paste or type the destination. For an external site, enter the complete address beginning with
https://. - Apply the link, then save, preview or publish the page.
- Click the image yourself and confirm that the destination opens.
WordPress offers optional controls such as opening the link in a new tab and marking it nofollow. Neither setting is required to make the image clickable. Choose them for a specific navigation or search-policy reason, rather than by default.
WordPress checks whether the URL has an acceptable format; it does not verify that the destination page exists or loads. A link can therefore be accepted by the editor and still lead to a 404, blocked page or mistyped domain. Test the published or preview URL.
Choose between HTML and the visual editor

Use HTML when you need a precise class, custom behavior or a reusable template. Use the WordPress control when you are editing a supported image block and do not need to touch markup.

Control appearance without breaking the link
The anchor can contain an image and still be styled like any other link. For example:

</a>Put layout and visual rules in CSS rather than changing the link structure. Keep the entire intended clickable area inside the anchor. If you add a visible focus style, keyboard users can see which image link is selected:

}Do not add an empty anchor around the image or place unrelated controls inside the same link. A single image link should have one clear purpose.
Image ownership, hosting and hotlinking
Use an image you own, have permission to publish, or can use under its license. Finding an image through a search engine does not grant reuse rights.

MDN warns that this can make the other owner pay for your bandwidth, and the file can be removed or changed without notice. In a simple setup, upload the permitted file to your own site; for larger deployments, a CDN can serve it while you retain control.
Troubleshoot a non-working image link
The image displays, but clicking does nothing
- Inspect the rendered markup and confirm that
<img>is between an opening and closing<a>tag. - Check for an overlay, disabled pointer events or a script that intercepts the click.
- In WordPress, verify that the Link control was applied to the image block rather than merely typing a URL into nearby text.
The click opens the wrong place
Read the anchor’s href, not the image’s src. The former controls navigation. Check spelling, protocol and path, and use the full https:// address for an external WordPress destination.
The image is broken
A broken image is a src problem: check the filename’s capitalization, folder, domain, permissions and whether the file still exists. A correct href cannot repair a missing image.

The link reaches a 404 or blocked page
The HTML can be syntactically valid while the destination is unavailable. Open the destination in a new browser tab, test it while logged out if appropriate, and correct the URL or publish the missing page. WordPress’s URL check does not perform this availability test.
Screen readers announce an unhelpful link
Improve the linked image’s alt text so it states the purpose or destination. If nearby text already supplies that purpose and the image is redundant, consider alt="" instead. Validate the choice with the surrounding content, not just the filename.
The image changes or disappears unexpectedly
Move the file to hosting you control or a permitted CDN. Do not rely on an unapproved third-party hotlink.

- Click and tap the image on desktop and mobile layouts.
- Confirm the destination uses the intended protocol and path.
- Open the page with images disabled or use an accessibility tool to check that the link still has meaningful text.
- Tab to the link and make sure its focus indicator is visible.
- Check that the image file loads with an acceptable size and format for your page.
- After publishing, test the final public URL, not only the editor preview.

Yes. Give the target element an id, such as <h2 id="details">, and use href="#details" on the image’s anchor.
Does an image link need a title attribute?
