To turn a screenshot into a link, upload the image to a hosting service, set its access permissions, and copy the resulting URL. Imgur is usually the quickest dedicated image host; Google Drive is better when you need account ownership and Viewer, Commenter, or Editor permissions; Dropbox suits existing Dropbox workflows; and ShareX can automate capture, upload, and URL copying on Windows.
Choose the method based on whether you need a direct image address, controlled access, repeatable automation, or simply the fastest way to share a support-ticket screenshot.

Method 1: Upload to Imgur
Imgur is the simplest dedicated image-host route when you need a link quickly.
- Open Imgur and select New post.
- Browse to the screenshot or drag it into the upload window.
- When the upload finishes, use the share controls to copy the post link or image address. Imgur supports copying direct URLs on desktop, mobile browsers, and its apps.
- Choose Hidden for an unlisted link, or Public if the post should be searchable and visible in your profile.
Imgur defines a hidden post as one “not shared with the general Imgur community and … only accessed via the URL.” Hidden therefore means unlisted, not confidential: anyone who receives the address can open it. If you upload while signed out, retain the URL because anonymous uploads are harder to locate and manage later.

When to use the direct image address
Use the copied image address when a ticketing system, Markdown field, HTML <img> tag, or chat tool expects an image URL. Use the post URL when you want Imgur’s page, comments, and sharing controls.
Method 2: Create a controlled Google Drive link
Drive is preferable when you need to find the file later, revoke access, or specify what recipients may do.
- Upload the screenshot to Google Drive.
- Select the file and click Share.
- Under General access, select Anyone with the link if recipients do not already have access.
- Choose Viewer unless people genuinely need to comment or edit.
- Click Copy link and paste it into your ticket, message, or document.
Google says files and folders stored in Drive can be shared with anyone, and its roles are Viewer, Commenter, and Editor. Drive links normally open a viewer/share page rather than a raw image file, which is often ideal for human review but may not work in systems that require a direct image URL.
Google warns that the owner’s name and email address are visible when a file link is shared. Use an appropriate account for public-facing material.

Method 3: Save screenshots and copy a Dropbox link
Dropbox is convenient when your screenshots already belong in a Dropbox folder. Dropbox documents an automatic workflow that saves screenshots made with supported native computer shortcuts and exposes Copy link to clipboard on Windows.
- Ensure the Dropbox desktop application and screenshot-saving feature are configured for your platform.
- Take a screenshot with a supported native shortcut.
- Open the resulting file in Dropbox and choose Copy link (or Copy link to clipboard where shown).
- Paste the link into the destination and verify that the recipient can open it.
Check Dropbox’s platform requirements before depending on this automation. Dropbox specifically notes that screenshots made with the Windows Snipping Tool do not save through that particular automatic workflow. A normal upload-and-share operation remains available when automatic capture is not supported.
Method 4: Automate the workflow with ShareX on Windows
ShareX is useful if you create support evidence repeatedly and want the URL copied without separate upload steps.
- Install and open ShareX.
- Choose an image destination in the destination settings.
- Under After capture tasks, enable Upload image to host.
- Under After upload tasks, enable Copy URL to clipboard.
- Capture a non-sensitive test image and confirm that the clipboard contains a working URL.
ShareX’s custom uploader documentation supports image, text, and file destinations. Advanced users can therefore connect the workflow to a compatible host or their own storage, but the destination must accept the file type and return a usable URL.

Privacy checks before you share
- Crop or redact passwords, API keys, authentication codes, addresses, names, private messages, and customer data.
- Confirm the destination and visibility setting before pasting the URL into a public issue, forum, or chat room.
- Treat every unlisted or Hidden URL as accessible to anyone who obtains it.
- Use Google Drive’s Viewer role for ordinary sharing; grant Commenter or Editor only when required.
- Keep a record of anonymous-host URLs if you may need to remove the files later.
- Open the link in a private browser window to check what an unauthenticated recipient sees.
Troubleshooting screenshot links
The recipient gets an access-denied message
On Drive or Dropbox, the file is probably restricted to your account or organization. Reopen Share, set the intended general access or recipient permissions, and copy a newly generated link. Test it while signed out.
The link opens a page instead of the image
Cloud-storage share links commonly point to a viewer page. That is expected. If the destination requires an image URL, use Imgur’s copied image address or configure ShareX with an image host that returns a direct file URL.
A Hidden Imgur link is still visible to others
Hidden is unlisted, not private. Anyone who has the URL can view it. Delete the upload if it contains sensitive material and create a redacted version.
ShareX uploads but does not copy a URL
Check that both Upload image to host and Copy URL to clipboard are enabled in the respective after-capture and after-upload sections. Verify the selected host and test with a harmless image.

Dropbox did not save the screenshot automatically
The shortcut or operating system may not meet Dropbox’s supported workflow. In particular, the documented automatic path does not save Windows Snipping Tool captures. Save the image manually to Dropbox, then use its copy-link command.
The URL stops working
The owner may have deleted the file, changed permissions, or an anonymous upload may have expired or become unmanageable. Account-backed storage is easier to audit and revoke; retain the original file and a record of where it was uploaded.
