Identify which symptom you have before changing settings. Then compare a second built-in capture method, check the destination, and test whether the problem happens on one app or every screen.
Start by identifying what went wrong
Before trying fixes, record the device and operating-system version, the app or page you captured, the capture shortcut or tool, what appeared in the result, and where you looked for the file. Keep the original image if one exists; editing or converting it can obscure whether the capture itself or the viewer caused the difference.
- No file found: The capture may have copied to the clipboard, saved to another folder or photo collection, or failed.
- Wrong area or incomplete page: Check the selected capture mode, window, region, or scrolling-capture option.
- Black or blank image: Compare the same method on an ordinary screen to see whether the issue is limited to one app.
- Unexpected brightness or color: Check whether the image is HDR and whether the viewer and display can show HDR.
- Screenshot-test mismatch: Compare the test environment as well as the interface; small pixel differences do not always mean a product regression.
These symptoms call for different checks. A missing file is not the same problem as a black image, and neither automatically means the capture shortcut is broken.
Use a second capture method to isolate the problem
Try capturing an ordinary screen, such as the desktop, home screen, or a non-protected app. Use a different built-in method if available, then explicitly open the resulting image or paste from the clipboard. If one method works and another does not, that points toward the shortcut, selection mode, destination, or app used by the failing method. If both methods show the same issue, it may lie with the target app, the device, or the image-viewing path. This comparison helps narrow the cause; it cannot by itself prove one diagnosis.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
Snipping Tool can capture a selected area or window and copies a snip to the clipboard; a notification lets you open it for editing or saving. The Print Screen key also copies the screen to the clipboard, so pressing it does not necessarily create a file. To save directly, press Windows+PrtScn and check PicturesScreenshots. On supported devices without a PrtScn key, try Fn+Windows+Space. See Microsoft’s guidance on copying window or screen contents and Print Screen shortcuts.
If you used Snipping Tool or Print Screen, open an app that accepts images and paste to check whether the capture reached the clipboard. If using Windows+PrtScn, inspect PicturesScreenshots rather than assuming the image should appear on the desktop.
Mac
Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot controls. Choose a capture mode and inspect Options > Save to to see the selected destination. The default is Desktop unless it has been changed. A Control-modified capture shortcut sends the image to the clipboard instead of saving it as a file. Apple’s Mac screenshot instructions also note that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow screenshots.

If the capture seems to have vanished, check the selected Save to destination and whether you held Control. For a clipboard capture, paste into an image-capable app to verify that it was captured.
iPhone
On Face ID models, press the side button and volume-up button together. On models with a Home button, press the side button and Home together. You can also use Siri, AssistiveTouch, or Back Tap. Find saved screenshots in the Screenshots collection in Photos. Apple’s iPhone screenshot instructions describe these methods and the Photos destination.
Android
On many Android devices, press Power and Volume down together. If available on your device, hold Power and tap Screenshot. Check Google Photos > Collections > On this device > Screenshots, or the Gallery app’s Screenshots album on devices that do not use Photos for this purpose. Google notes that steps can differ by device and manufacturer; use the manufacturer’s instructions if the generic controls do not match. If the screenshot is black or blank
Use the same capture method on an ordinary screen, then compare that result with the target app. If the ordinary screen is captured correctly but one app is black or blank, the issue may be specific to that app. Check the app’s own support guidance. Some applications restrict screenshots; Apple’s Mac documentation gives Apple TV as an example. A black image alone does not establish that a content restriction is the cause.
If ordinary screens are also black or blank, treat it as a general capture problem rather than assuming a restriction. Try the alternate built-in method and check whether the result was actually saved or copied. If both methods fail across ordinary screens, the platform guidance available here does not establish one universal repair sequence. Record the device, OS version, capture method, and sample result for device-specific support.

If the image looks too bright, dim, or a different color
Check the capture format and the capabilities of the viewer and display before assuming the screenshot is inaccurate. HDR can preserve a wider brightness and color range than SDR, but an SDR display or viewer may not show that HDR result as intended.

iPhone capture settings
Apple says iPhone SDR screenshots use PNG and HDR screenshots use HEIF. HDR can capture more brightness and color, but an HDR display is needed to see the full HDR quality; on a standard display, an HDR screenshot is presented in SDR. Review the available capture setting and compare the image in a viewer and on a display that support the format. See Apple’s iPhone screen-capture settings.
Mac capture settings
On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple’s screenshot guidance describes SDR/PNG and HDR/HEIF options. HDR can capture more brightness and color, but the difference requires an HDR display to be visible. Confirm the selected format and use a compatible viewer and display when judging the result; there is no basis to say one format is always more accurate. See Apple’s Mac screenshot instructions.

A screenshot test compares rendered images, so differences can arise even when the intended interface is the same. Android Developers identifies platform (Linux, Mac, or Windows), OS or library changes, and hardware architecture as potential sources of small changes. First compare like-for-like environments: operating system, runtime and library versions, and hardware or architecture. Also review whether the change affects behavior or only a small number of pixels.

Android Developers describes two broad strategies: tolerate small differences or generate screenshots on a server. Tolerance can reduce noise, but it can also create false positives or miss errors. Keep thresholds conservative, inspect changed images visually, and do not treat every pixel-level diff as proof of a UI regression. See the Android Developers guide to screenshot testing.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Repeating the same shortcut without checking the destination: First determine whether the result went to the clipboard, a folder, or Photos/Gallery.
- Assuming a black capture proves DRM or a privacy block: Compare it with an ordinary screen and consult the affected app’s support information.
- Judging an HDR image in an SDR-only path: Check the file format and display/viewer capability before changing capture settings.
- Treating every test diff as a visual bug: Align environments and inspect the changed pixels before attributing the difference to the app.
When to ask for device-specific help
If an alternate built-in method still fails on ordinary screens, or the result remains unexplained after checking the destination and viewer, gather the details needed for a targeted diagnosis: device model, OS version, affected app or page, capture method, exact result, and where you searched for the image. Include the original file when available. Without those details, a universal cause or repair cannot be established across platforms and third-party apps.
