To capture what a JavaScript-rendered page actually displays, use a real browser through Playwright or Puppeteer: navigate to the URL, wait for the content that matters, run any required page-side code, and then call the screenshot method. A plain HTTP request downloads HTML but does not execute the browser code that creates many modern interfaces.
Why a normal HTTP request is not enough
Many pages send a minimal HTML shell and build the visible interface after JavaScript runs. Data may arrive through fetch requests, a chart may be drawn on a canvas, and a single-page application may replace the initial document after hydration. An HTTP client such as curl can retrieve the source, but it cannot reproduce the browser’s layout, styles, fonts, JavaScript execution, or user interactions.
Browser automation launches Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit, loads the page in a browser context, and exposes the rendered page to a screenshot API. Playwright and Puppeteer both document a navigation-then-screenshot workflow. See the Playwright Page API and Puppeteer screenshot guide.
Playwright: capture after the page is ready
Install Playwright in an existing Node.js project, then install the browser binaries using the commands appropriate to your project and Playwright version. The central sequence is goto(), an application-specific readiness wait, optional evaluate(), and screenshot().

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Replace this with a selector that proves your page is usable.
await page.locator('main').waitFor();
// Run page-side JavaScript when your workflow needs it.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
// Example: await window.appReadyPromise;
document.documentElement.classList.add('screenshot-mode');
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
The example is an illustrative combination of documented APIs, not a claim that every target uses a main element or an appReadyPromise. Replace the selector and page code with conditions specific to your application. Playwright’s page.evaluate() runs in the page’s JavaScript context; when the function returns a promise, Playwright waits for that promise to resolve. The API reference is at playwright.dev/docs/api/class-page.
Choose the navigation wait deliberately
Playwright supports commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle navigation states. They describe browser events, not necessarily the moment your data, animation, or framework has finished. Playwright labels networkidle as discouraged for tests; a page can keep polling or opening analytics connections even when the required content is already visible. Prefer a web assertion, selector, expected text, or known application state.
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Quarterly results' }).waitFor();
await page.locator('[data-rendered="true"]').waitFor();
If the application exposes no reliable marker, a short, explicit delay can be a fallback, but it is less robust than waiting for the result you need. Do not assume that load or network quiet captures every delayed render.
Run interactions before the capture
Click tabs, dismiss a modal, submit a search, or scroll to trigger lazy content before taking the image.

await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Show details' }).click();
await page.locator('#details-panel').waitFor();
await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollTo(0, document.body.scrollHeight));
await page.waitForTimeout(500);
Use a state or selector wait after each interaction where possible. A fixed timeout should account for a known animation or debounce, not substitute for all readiness checks.
Viewport, full-page, and element screenshots
- Viewport: omit
fullPageto capture the currently visible browser area. - Full page: set
fullPage: trueto include the page’s scrollable content. - Element: locate a component and call its screenshot method.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.webp', type: 'webp', quality: 85 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'entire-page.png', fullPage: true });
await page.locator('.sales-chart').screenshot({ path: 'chart.png' });
Output type, scale, viewport dimensions, and element targeting are documented in Playwright’s screenshot references: Playwright screenshots and Playwright MCP screenshot tools. Full-page captures can be very tall; element or viewport captures are often easier to process and share.
Puppeteer: the equivalent workflow
Puppeteer is a natural choice when the project already uses its API or when your team standardizes on Puppeteer. The readiness principle is the same: wait for the state you intend to document, then call page.screenshot().
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.waitForSelector('main');
await page.evaluate(() => {
document.documentElement.classList.add('screenshot-mode');
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Consult the version-specific Puppeteer screenshots guide and Page.screenshot() API for current options. Existing project language, installed browser, and the exact framework version are better selection criteria than a general claim that one library is universally faster or more reliable; the cited documentation does not establish such a winner.

Make the rendered image deterministic
Set the environment
- Choose a fixed viewport and device scale factor so layout breakpoints do not change between runs.
- Set a consistent timezone, locale, and color scheme when the page uses them.
- Wait for web fonts and images if they affect the visual result.
- Disable or freeze animations and carousels with injected CSS when a stable frame matters.
await page.addStyleTag({ content: `*, *::before, *::after {
animation: none !important;
transition: none !important;
caret-color: transparent !important;
}` });
Lazy loading and long pages
Some images load only after entering the viewport. Scroll incrementally, wait for image completion, or use the application’s own “load all” behavior before a full-page capture. A full-page screenshot is not a guarantee that every lazy resource has loaded; verify the signals your page exposes.
Authentication and sensitive content
Use a dedicated test account or a controlled browser context. Keep credentials out of source control, restrict screenshot storage, and avoid writing tokens into URLs. If the application depends on cross-origin frames, remember that page-side JavaScript cannot freely inspect another origin; wait for the frame’s own visible signal or use the automation framework’s frame APIs.
Troubleshooting common failures
The screenshot shows a loading shell
Cause: navigation finished before client rendering or data retrieval. Fix: wait for a meaningful result selector, expected text, or application state. Do not simply increase a timeout until the symptom disappears.
Content is missing below the fold
Cause: the capture was viewport-only, or lazy loading never triggered. Fix: use fullPage: true, scroll to trigger loads, and wait for the resulting images or elements.

The page times out
Cause: slow resources, a blocked request, or a page that never reaches the chosen lifecycle state. Fix: use a suitable timeout, choose domcontentloaded when appropriate, and wait separately for the business-critical selector. Investigate failed requests rather than masking them with an extreme timeout.
A cookie banner, chat bubble, or modal obscures the page
Cause: those elements are part of the rendered DOM. Fix: click the relevant control, inject narrowly scoped CSS, or remove the element only when doing so reflects your capture requirements. Be careful not to hide content you intend to document.
Fonts or images differ between runs
Cause: resources were still loading, the environment changed, or a remote service returned different data. Fix: wait for resource completion, pin the browser and viewport settings, and capture against deterministic test data where possible.
The browser cannot launch in CI
Cause: missing browser binaries or operating-system dependencies. Fix: install the framework’s supported browser package and dependencies for your CI image, then use the launch configuration recommended by your installed version. Keep browser and library versions aligned.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It executes the page in a browser and offers waits, custom JavaScript, clicks, full-page and element capture, device presets, retina scale, cookies, headers, authentication, timezone and geolocation controls, resource blocking, resizing, caching, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, PDFs, and HTML/CSS-to-image. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. The MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all parameters and response details. The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to begin.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which approach should you choose?
- Choose Playwright when your project already uses it, needs its locator and assertion model, or benefits from its documented multi-browser APIs.
- Choose Puppeteer when your existing automation and team conventions are built around Puppeteer.
- Choose ScreenshotNeo when you want an HTTP or MCP interface without maintaining browser binaries, and especially when clean captures and billing only for successful shots matter.
Whichever route you choose, define “ready” as the visible state your reader or downstream system needs—not merely the end of navigation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does JavaScript have to be enabled for a rendered screenshot?
Yes. Use a browser automation tool or a screenshot service that executes the page. A plain HTTP fetch does not render client-side JavaScript.
Is network idle always the right wait condition?
No. Playwright discourages relying on network-idle for tests because pages may poll or keep connections open. Wait for the selector, text, or application state that proves the required content is ready.
Can I capture only one component instead of the whole page?
Yes. Playwright and Puppeteer support element screenshots; locate the chart, form, or other component and capture that element rather than the viewport or full document.
