On a Windows PC, press Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn) to copy an image of the entire screen to the clipboard. Open an app that accepts images and press Ctrl + V to paste it. If you need a file immediately, press Windows + PrtScn; Windows saves the full-screen image in Pictures > Screenshots.
Choose the shortcut that matches what you need

These shortcuts are documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Keyboard firmware, laptop function-key settings and the Windows Print Screen preference can change what happens when you press a key.
Copy the whole screen with Print Screen
- Arrange the desktop so every detail you want is visible. Minimize private windows and move menus or tooltips into position.
- Press Print Screen. The key may be printed as PrtSc, PrtScn or PrntScrn, and is usually near the upper-right area of a full-size keyboard.
- Open the destination application. Word, Paint, Outlook, webmail composers and many messaging or image-editing apps accept pasted images.
- Press Ctrl + V. The screen image appears in that application.
- If you need a standalone file, use the application’s save or export command and choose a format such as PNG or JPEG. The Print Screen shortcut itself normally does not create a file.
Print Screen places the capture in Windows’ clipboard, which is temporary computer memory. Copying another item can replace it, so paste the screenshot before copying something else.
Capture only the active window
- Click the window you want so it is active. Its title bar or taskbar button normally indicates focus.
- Press Alt + Print Screen.
- Switch to the destination app and press Ctrl + V.
This is useful for documenting an error dialog or application while excluding the taskbar, desktop and other windows. If a menu closes when you click away, use Windows + Shift + S instead and select the visible area.

Save a full-screen screenshot directly
Press Windows logo key + PrtScn at the same time. The display may dim briefly. Open File Explorer and browse to Pictures > Screenshots. Windows names each capture sequentially. This shortcut is preferable when you want a file and do not need to crop or annotate before saving.
On a multi-monitor setup, the full-screen result can include every display. For a single monitor or a precise region, use the Snipping Tool shortcut described below.
Select an area with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows + Shift + S. A capture bar appears over the desktop.
- Choose the capture mode: rectangular selection, free-form selection, a specific window, or the full screen.
- Drag around the area, or click the window or screen requested by the mode.
- Use the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool. From there you can mark it up, crop it and save it.
The selection is also copied to the clipboard, so you can paste it immediately with Ctrl + V. If pressing Print Screen itself opens this overlay, Windows has been configured to use the key for screen snipping; select the region and continue in Snipping Tool, or change that preference if you specifically want the old clipboard-only behavior.

When the keyboard has no Print Screen key
Some compact keyboards and laptops omit a dedicated button. Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as the screenshot shortcut for devices without a PrtScn key. On other keyboards, the function row may share Print Screen with another symbol, requiring Fn plus that key. Check the key legends and try the laptop’s Fn-lock setting if the shortcut does nothing.

Fix common Print Screen problems
Nothing appears when you press Print Screen
- Press Ctrl + V in Paint or another image-capable app; Print Screen normally gives no on-screen confirmation.
- Make sure the destination app is focused and accepts images. A plain-text field cannot display a bitmap.
- Try Windows + Shift + S to determine whether Windows can capture through Snipping Tool.
- On a laptop, try the hardware-required Fn modifier or the documented no-PrtScn shortcut.
Print Screen opens a selection overlay instead
Windows can be configured so the key launches screen snipping. Use the overlay to capture the region you need. If you want a direct clipboard copy of the whole display, open Windows’ keyboard accessibility or screenshot settings and disable the option that makes Print Screen open screen snipping; the exact setting label can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds.
The wrong window was captured
Print Screen captures the complete display, not just the app you were using. Activate the desired window and use Alt + Print Screen, or use Windows + Shift + S and choose window mode.

The saved image is missing
Only Windows + PrtScn automatically writes to Pictures > Screenshots. A plain Print Screen capture remains in the clipboard until you paste it and save it from an application. If you pasted into an editor, check that editor’s default save folder and file format.
The screenshot contains sensitive information
Before capturing, close password managers, private messages, customer records and notification previews. Crop or cover confidential details in Snipping Tool or an editor before sharing. Remember that a pasted image can remain in the clipboard until another copy operation replaces it.
A protected video or blank window appears
Some applications deliberately render protected media as black or blank when captured. Print Screen cannot override an application’s content-protection policy. Capture permitted interface elements instead, or use the application’s own export or sharing function.

Practical quality and reliability tips
- Set the desktop or browser zoom before capturing so text is legible at the final size.
- Wait for menus, tooltips and dynamic content to settle; Print Screen captures the exact pixels visible at that instant.
- For documentation, paste into an editor where you can add a descriptive filename and crop unnecessary surroundings.
- For repeatable website images, use a fixed viewport and waits rather than manual Print Screen captures; an API can also remove transient consent and chat elements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Print Screen upload my screenshot anywhere?
No. The normal shortcut copies the image to Windows clipboard memory on your PC. It is not sent to an online service unless you paste or upload it yourself.
Can I change the image format produced by Print Screen?
Print Screen does not choose a file format because it normally creates a clipboard image. The application where you paste it determines the format and compression when you save.
Why does my laptop require Fn for the shortcut?
Laptop manufacturers often share the Print Screen function with another key or place it on a secondary layer. Use the printed key combination, the keyboard’s Fn-lock control, or Windows + Shift + S.
