On desktop Chrome, open DevTools, search the DevTools Command Menu for screenshot, then choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page. Chrome saves the result as a PNG. For repeatable captures, Headless Chrome can create a PNG with one command. On Android, use the phone’s native screenshot and scrolling-screenshot controls because mobile Chrome does not expose the desktop DevTools capture workflow.

Take a screenshot of the visible page in desktop Chrome
- Open the page you want to capture in Chrome.
- Open DevTools from More tools > Developer Tools, or use your platform’s DevTools shortcut.
- Open the DevTools Command Menu and search for screenshot.
- Choose Capture screenshot. Chrome captures only the current viewport, not content below the fold.
- When Chrome asks where to save the image, select a folder and confirm. The built-in command produces a PNG.
This is the best choice for documenting exactly what a visitor sees at a specific viewport size. Resize the browser before opening the Command Menu if the screenshot must match a design review, bug report, or support ticket.
Capture a full-page screenshot in Chrome
To screenshot the entire web page, repeat the same process but select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome renders and saves content outside the visible viewport, including sections that require scrolling.
- Load the page completely. If important content appears only after an interaction, perform that interaction first.
- Open More tools > Developer Tools.
- Open the DevTools Command Menu and search for screenshot.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot.
- Save the generated PNG when prompted.
Full-page capture is useful for design handoffs, archived references, and issue reports. Very long pages can produce large images; use an image editor to crop or resize a copy rather than altering the original evidence.

Use Device Mode for a mobile-sized page
- Open DevTools and turn on Device Mode.
- Choose a device preset or enter the viewport dimensions you need.
- Reload the page so responsive CSS and images apply to the emulated viewport.
- Open the Command Menu, search for screenshot, and choose either Capture screenshot or Capture a full size screenshot.
- If you want the device outline in the result, enable Show device frame before capturing in the device-specific mode.
Device Mode emulates a viewport; it is not a substitute for testing on physical hardware. Fonts, touch behavior, camera cutouts, and browser UI can differ from a real phone.
Take a scrolling screenshot on Android
Android Chrome relies on Android’s operating-system capture controls rather than the desktop DevTools commands.
- Open the page in Chrome and position it at the screen where the capture should begin.
- Press Power and Volume Down together. If your phone offers it, hold the Power button and tap Screenshot.
- For a long page, tap Take a scrolling screenshot (the label can vary by manufacturer) and extend the selected area until it includes the required content.
- Save or share the image from the preview.
Google documents scrolling screenshots on Android 12 and later for most screens that support scrolling. The option can be absent on older versions, unsupported screens, or particular phone models. If it does not appear, use the manufacturer’s screenshot instructions or capture several sections separately.

Automate Chrome screenshots with Headless Chrome
Headless Chrome runs without a visible browser window, making it suitable for scheduled captures and build jobs. The documented basic command is:
chrome --headless --disable-gpu --screenshot https://example.com/Chrome writes screenshot.png in the command’s current working directory. Use an explicit viewport when dimensions matter:
chrome --headless --disable-gpu --screenshot --window-size=1280,1696 https://example.com/Make command-line captures repeatable
- Run the command from a directory where the process can write files.
- Use the same Chrome version and window dimensions in scheduled jobs so image comparisons are meaningful.
- Wait for the page’s normal load process before judging the result; pages that build content after load may need a different automation strategy.
- Keep the URL quoted when it contains shell characters such as
&or?. - Check that the resulting file is actually
screenshot.pngand that your job has permission to read it.

Troubleshoot Chrome screenshot problems
The screenshot contains only the visible area
You selected Capture screenshot, which intentionally captures the viewport. Open the Command Menu again and choose Capture a full size screenshot.
The page is blank or missing sections
- Reload the page and wait for its content to finish loading before opening the capture command.
- Scroll through the page once if images or sections are lazy-loaded, then retry the full-size capture.
- Check whether a login, consent dialog, bot check, or blocked resource is preventing normal rendering.
- For a page that requires a click, perform the click first; the screenshot command captures the current browser state.
The mobile layout does not match a phone
In Device Mode, verify the selected preset and viewport dimensions, reload after changing them, and decide whether Show device frame should be enabled. Device Mode is an emulation, so confirm critical results on physical Android hardware.

Headless Chrome cannot create the file
Confirm that the chrome executable is installed and on your PATH, run the command from a writable directory, and check the process exit output. Add --window-size when the default viewport is unsuitable. The file is written relative to the directory in which the command runs.

The Android scrolling option is missing
Scrolling capture depends on Android version, the manufacturer’s interface, and whether the current screen advertises scrollable content. Update the phone if possible, try the Power-menu Screenshot action, or capture separate sections.

- Choose viewport capture when the visible state matters; choose full-size capture when below-the-fold content is part of the record.
- Record the URL, viewport dimensions, Chrome version, and capture date alongside important screenshots.
