A toroidal transformer usually has lower stray magnetic flux than a laminated transformer, but it can still inject 50/60-Hz hum into high-gain audio, sensors, CRTs and measurement circuits. Magnetic leakage calls for distance, orientation, silicon-steel or high-permeability shielding. Primary-to-secondary capacitive noise calls for an insulated copper electrostatic screen. High-frequency conducted or radiated noise needs filtering, ferrites, short return paths and a properly bonded enclosure—not simply copper foil.
Identify the interference before choosing material
“EMI” can describe several different mechanisms. Match the symptom to the remedy:

A toroid’s closed core reduces magnetic leakage but does not make it EMI-free. Winding geometry, lead exits, rectifier current pulses and proximity to a victim circuit still matter. See the transformer shielding overview from Avel Lindberg.
Run simple diagnostic tests
- Relocate it: with safe, insulated temporary wiring and appropriate mains precautions, move the transformer farther away. A rapid improvement indicates near-field coupling, usually magnetic.
- Rotate it: change its axis while observing the noise. A strong minimum and maximum indicate magnetic coupling or a loop acting as an antenna.
- Reduce loops: twist each AC secondary pair, keep primary and secondary leads close to their return conductors, and route them away from inputs, feedback and sensor wiring.
- Check frequency: use an oscilloscope, audio analyzer, spectrum analyzer, near-field probe or EMI receiver. A 50/60-Hz line points toward magnetic pickup or a ground loop; higher frequencies suggest rectifier recovery, switching or capacitive coupling.
- Check grounding safely: an intentional chassis or screen connection can change common-mode noise, but never defeat protective earth or make an arbitrary mains-ground connection.
Also test for ground loops, star-ground errors and rectifier charging loops before blaming the transformer.

Countermeasures, from simplest to specialized
Distance, orientation and layout
These are usually the safest and cheapest fixes. Keep the toroid away from low-level stages, avoid placing it directly above or below an input board, rotate it for minimum pickup, and separate high-current rectifier/reservoir loops from signal wiring. A shield cannot fully compensate for a transformer mounted beside a high-gain input.
Copper electrostatic screen
A thin, insulated copper foil between the primary and secondary windings intercepts capacitive current and reduces common-mode transfer. It does not contain the 50/60-Hz magnetic field. Transformer catalogs describe this as a laminated foil with a dedicated lead, insulated from both windings; construction options are shown in the DigiKey toroidal-transformer catalog.
- Specify the screen when ordering and state the intended protective-earth or functional-earth architecture.
- Keep it insulated from windings, core and mounting hardware.
- Do not confuse a functional screen connection with the transformer’s safety ground. Toroid Corporation explicitly distinguishes the two.
- Do not wrap an energized mains transformer casually: foil can violate insulation, creepage, clearance and thermal requirements or form a shorted turn.
Silicon-steel magnetic belly band
A band around the toroid’s outside circumference redirects part of the leakage flux. Silicon-steel bands are practical for ordinary audio and general-purpose problems. They must be correctly sized, insulated where required and tested in the final geometry. Leakage may still emerge through the center opening, lead exits, mounting hardware or gaps.

Steel enclosure
A surrounding steel can can outperform a single band when sensitivity is high. Design for thermal clearance, ventilation, vibration isolation, cable openings, protective-earth bonding and service access. A metal box is not universal: seams and penetrations can dominate performance, and RF electric-field shielding may require different materials and bonding.

High-permeability alloys redirect magnetic flux rather than eliminate it. Performance depends on field strength, frequency, thickness, shape, openings, orientation and mechanical stress. Magnetic Shield Corporation notes that openings reduce attenuation and that final annealing after forming is important.
- Use engineered high-permeability shielding for very sensitive, relatively low-intensity fields.
- Strong fields can saturate the material; thicker soft iron or steel, sometimes combined with a high-permeability layer, may work better.
- Bending, stamping and welding can degrade permeability unless the alloy receives the specified treatment.
- Multiple properly spaced layers can outperform one layer, but only measurement validates the result.
Filtering and ferrites
If noise arrives on mains or secondary conductors, magnetic shielding may do little. Consider an input common-mode choke, differential-mode inductance, correctly rated X capacitors, safety-approved Y capacitors, rectifier snubbers, ferrite sleeves and short, separated dirty/clean current paths. Ferrite impedance is frequency- and current-dependent; Fair-Rite’s toroid data illustrates why a ferrite for conducted suppression is not a low-frequency magnetic shield.

Choose by symptom
50/60-Hz hum in an audio input
- Confirm the fundamental and harmonics.
- Move and rotate the transformer, then separate it from the input stage.
- Tightly route or twist transformer and rectifier wiring.
- Check ground loops and PCB pickup independently.
- Add a silicon-steel band; use a steel can or custom shielded transformer if necessary.
- Retest at the amplifier’s normal gain and load.
Noise between isolated circuits
Specify an insulated interwinding screen, connect it to the designed earth/reference point, review interwinding capacitance and add common-mode filtering if required.
Failed conducted-emissions test
Separate common-mode from differential-mode behavior, inspect rectifier and switch-node loops, optimize the filters, add ferrites to external leads where appropriate, and consider an electrostatic screen. A magnetic belly band is not a conducted-EMI cure.

Measure field strength and direction at the sensor under normal transformer load. Increase spacing, change orientation, then design a shield for the measured field. Check saturation, seams, apertures and cable penetrations in the complete assembly.

Safety and construction limits
A transformer shield is not automatically a safety barrier. The complete design must maintain basic or reinforced insulation, creepage and clearance, fuse and thermal protection, leakage-current limits, enclosure bonding and applicable product standards. Manufacturer options such as medical insulation, thermal protectors, electrostatic screens and magnetic shields are separate features; one does not substitute for another.
Conductive material in an alternating magnetic field can carry eddy currents. Avoid thick closed copper loops around the magnetic circuit, uninsulated foil touching windings, blocked cooling airflow and bands that unintentionally short mounting hardware. A thin Faraday screen is used specifically to limit eddy-current effects in the TI application note at TI.
Some “EMI” is mechanical buzz. Impregnation, potting, soft mounting washers, correct clamping and vibration isolation address that problem better than electromagnetic shielding.

Specify shielding when ordering
A factory-built solution is usually safer and more predictable than modifying a finished mains transformer. Ask the manufacturer for:
- Primary voltage, frequency, secondary voltage under load and VA rating
- Electrostatic screen location, insulation system and termination
- Interwinding capacitance and leakage-current information
- Silicon-steel band, high-permeability shield or steel can
- Maximum stray field measured at a stated distance and load
- Inrush current, thermal protection, impregnation or potting
- Required approvals for the intended country and product category
- Mechanical diameter, height, mounting, lead routing and ventilation requirements

Verify the finished assembly
Measure with the transformer installed in its real enclosure, with normal mains, load, wiring, gain and cable routing. Check field strength at the actual victim location, noise spectra, chassis current and emissions across the relevant frequency range. Shielding effectiveness depends on geometry, seams, grounding and apertures; no universal attenuation figure can be promised from a material name alone.
