Use your operating system’s area or region screenshot mode, then drag a rectangle from one corner of the desired monitor to the opposite corner. Release only after the rectangle covers that display. This captures the pixels inside the selection without including the neighboring monitor. A window capture is different: it captures one application window, not everything visible on a display.
The reliable method on any multi-monitor computer
- Open the built-in screenshot overlay or screenshot utility.
- Choose Area, Region, Rectangular, or Partial capture. Do not choose Full screen unless capturing every connected display is acceptable.
- Place the pointer at a corner of the display you want.
- Drag to the opposite corner, keeping the selection inside that monitor’s boundaries.
- Complete the capture, then inspect the resulting image before sharing it.
The selection overlay usually spans the combined desktop, so it can cross a monitor boundary if you drag too far. Area selection is therefore the most dependable way to capture an entire physical display, or any exact portion of it.
Choose the right capture mode

Do not treat “window” as a synonym for “monitor.” A maximized app may fill a display, but window capture can still exclude the desktop, taskbar, another app, or other visible content on that monitor. Likewise, “full screen” does not consistently mean “the current monitor” on every platform.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Capture one complete display with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool capture overlay appears.
- Select the Rectangular snip icon.
- Drag from one corner of the target monitor to its opposite corner. Keep the crosshair within that display, including its taskbar only if you want it.
- Release the mouse button. The snip is copied to the clipboard and opened in Snipping Tool, where you can edit, save, or share it.
Windows also offers freeform, window, and full-screen modes in Snipping Tool. If the keyboard shortcut does nothing or your build shows a different overlay, open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and choose the visible rectangular selection mode there.

Do not use Alt + Print Screen for this task. Microsoft documents that shortcut as capturing the active window. It is appropriate for one application window, not for all content on one physical monitor.
macOS
Capture one display or a custom part of it
- Press Shift + Command + 4. The pointer becomes a crosshair.
- Drag a rectangle over the intended display. Start and finish at the display’s corners for a full-monitor image, or stop earlier for a crop.
- Release to capture.
macOS saves the screenshot to the desktop after the thumbnail disappears or is dismissed. If you need to adjust the rectangle before releasing, hold the appropriate modifier keys shown by the on-screen selection behavior; otherwise, cancel and redraw rather than accepting a boundary that crosses onto the neighboring monitor.
Capture one application window instead
Press Shift + Command + 4, then press Space. The pointer changes to a camera. Click the target window. This is useful when the goal is one app rather than every item visible on the display. Some applications, including Apple TV, may prevent screenshots of their windows.
Chromebook and ChromeOS
Use Screen Capture
- Press the Chromebook’s Screenshot key, if your keyboard has one.
- If it does not, open Settings > Screen Capture. You can also press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 for an external keyboard without a Show windows key.
- Choose Screenshot, then select Partial screenshot.
- Drag the selection so it covers only the desired monitor, and confirm the capture.
ChromeOS also provides full-screen and window screenshot modes. Screenshots are saved in Downloads by default and copied to the clipboard, so you can paste the result into an editor, message, or document immediately.

Linux with GNOME
Select a screen-sized area
- Press Print, or open the screenshot control from the system menu.
- In the screenshot overlay, choose Area.
- Drag around only the monitor you want. GNOME’s interface also exposes screen and window choices, so verify that Area is selected before drawing.
- Complete the capture.
GNOME saves screenshots in Pictures/Screenshots and copies them to the clipboard. One GNOME help version documents Shift + Print for an area screenshot, but shortcut bindings can differ. The visible screenshot interface is the safer route when the shortcut has been remapped or does not respond. These instructions are for GNOME; KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon, and other Linux desktops may expose different tools and defaults.
Check the result and preserve the boundary
- Look for the neighboring display’s taskbar, wallpaper, or window edge. Any of these means the rectangle crossed the monitor boundary.
- Check the entire height and width. A display-sized capture can miss a strip if the drag started inside the bezel area or ended before the far edge.
- Remember display scaling. The pointer moves through a combined desktop whose logical coordinates may not match physical pixel dimensions. Use the visible monitor edges as the boundary, then inspect the saved image at 100 percent.
- Redraw instead of editing when accuracy matters. A second area capture avoids leaving an accidental neighboring pixel row or taskbar in the file.
If you are documenting a workflow, decide whether the pointer, taskbar, notifications, or desktop background should be visible before capturing. The operating-system tools above select pixels; they do not automatically turn a monitor capture into a clean application-only image.
Troubleshooting
The screenshot includes part of another monitor
You used a full-screen mode or dragged the area beyond the target display. Reopen the overlay, choose rectangular, partial, or area selection, and start and finish at the target monitor’s visible corners. Verify the result before sending it.
I captured only an app, not the whole monitor
Window mode was selected. Switch to area or rectangular mode and draw around the complete display. Window mode is correct only when one application is the intended subject.

The shortcut does not work
Keyboard layouts, remapped keys, operating-system versions, and desktop environments can change shortcuts. Open Snipping Tool, Screen Capture, or the GNOME screenshot control from the app launcher or system menu and use the mode shown in its interface. On a Chromebook, use Settings > Screen Capture if the hardware key is unavailable.
The saved file is not where I expected
Windows sends the capture to Snipping Tool and the clipboard for editing, saving, and sharing. macOS saves it to the desktop after the thumbnail is dismissed. ChromeOS uses Downloads by default and also copies it to the clipboard. GNOME uses Pictures/Screenshots and the clipboard. Use the clipboard when you need to paste immediately; use the platform’s editor or file manager when you need a named file.
macOS refuses to capture one application
Some applications, including Apple TV, may block screenshots of their windows. Try area selection if the content is visible on the desktop; if that application still prevents capture, consult its current support documentation.
I am trying this on Android or an iPhone/iPad
Mobile screenshot controls are manufacturer- and model-dependent. Android’s official guidance describes taking a screenshot and using crop guides, but it does not establish a consistent method for capturing only one external monitor. If the standard button combination fails, use the device manufacturer’s current support instructions. A reliable external-display workflow was not established for iPhone or iPad in the platform documentation considered here.
