To scrape a website with an API, first check whether the site offers an authorized API for the data you need. If it does, call that endpoint and validate its structured response. If not, use an appropriate HTML-fetching or managed scraping API, and enable browser rendering only when the page creates its data with JavaScript. Keep credentials on your server, respect the site’s access rules and rate limits, and store only validated results.

What “scraping with an API” means

The phrase can describe two different approaches:

  • Calling a website’s own API: You locate an endpoint the site makes available, send it a request, and use its structured response—often JSON—instead of extracting values from HTML. This is usually the cleanest route when the endpoint is documented and you are authorized to use it. Apify’s explanation of API scraping describes this approach and notes that some endpoints require particular headers, payloads, rate-limit handling, or knowledge of GraphQL.
  • Using a managed scraping API: You send a scraping service a target URL and options. The service fetches or renders the page and returns HTML or extracted data. This can help when there is no suitable direct API or the page needs browser execution, proxying, or a predefined extractor.

Neither approach makes restricted information public or grants permission to collect it. An API call is a transport and processing method, not an authorization shortcut.

Choose the right data path

Approach Use it when Main trade-off
Website’s documented API The site provides an endpoint that returns the fields you need and permits your intended use. Structured data is convenient, but you must follow the API’s authentication, pagination, and rate-limit rules.
HTML-fetching API You need page markup and can extract the data from the returned HTML. HTML structure can change, so selectors and parsing need maintenance.
Browser-rendering or managed scraping API The relevant data appears after JavaScript runs, or you need a managed proxy, extractor, or job workflow. More processing can add configuration and cost; compare the service’s current capabilities and limits for your workload.

For managed options, ScraperAPI documentation describes sending a URL and API key to receive page HTML, alongside API, asynchronous, proxy, structured-data, and DataPipeline interfaces. Its controls documentation covers JavaScript rendering and JSON parsing. Apify’s platform documentation describes Actors, storage, proxies, schedules, integrations, and monitoring, while its REST API uses resource-oriented URLs, JSON responses, standard HTTP status codes, and bearer-token authentication. Bright Data’s Web Scraper API documents prebuilt scrapers for more than 100 popular websites, with URL or keyword inputs and JSON, NDJSON, or CSV output. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent performance or accuracy comparisons.

Compare services by the actual job: direct API versus HTML or browser rendering, JavaScript support, proxy and anti-bot needs, structured output, synchronous versus asynchronous jobs, batch capacity, scheduling, delivery and storage integrations, monitoring, maintenance, and total cost. Bright Data documents synchronous jobs for smaller real-time requests and asynchronous jobs for larger batches; Apify emphasizes Actors, schedules, storage, and monitoring; ScraperAPI emphasizes an authenticated request with rendering and structured-data controls. Check each vendor’s current documentation for plan limits and prices before choosing.

Check permission, robots.txt, and scope first

Before collecting data, read the site’s terms and API documentation, identify authentication requirements, and consider applicable privacy and data-use rules. Limit collection to fields and records you need. Do not treat a publicly reachable URL as proof that you may automate access or reuse its contents.

RFC 9309, published by the IETF in September 2022, standardizes the Robots Exclusion Protocol. It says robots.txt rules must be available at /robots.txt and that after a successful fetch, crawlers must follow parseable rules. The standard is also explicit: “These rules are not a form of access authorization.” Robots.txt is crawler guidance, not a login, license, or permission to access protected data. Use the site’s real authentication and authorization process where required, and stop if your intended use is not permitted.

A reliable scraping workflow

  1. Define the data and scope. Write down the specific fields, pages, update frequency, and intended use. Confirm that the source permits the access and use you plan.
  2. Find the best endpoint. Prefer documented site APIs where they supply the needed data. If there is no suitable permitted endpoint, decide whether you need raw HTML, browser rendering, a structured extractor, or a prebuilt dataset.
  3. Keep credentials server-side. Put API keys or bearer tokens in environment-based secret storage. Do not place them in browser JavaScript, a public repository, logs, or error messages.
  4. Test one request. Send a small request with only required parameters. Inspect the HTTP status, content type, response shape, pagination fields, and any API-specific error object before scaling up.
  5. Render only when needed. If the required values are absent from the initial HTML because client-side JavaScript creates them, choose a rendering-capable approach. Otherwise, avoid browser execution you do not need.
  6. Scale with safeguards. Bound concurrency, respect published limits, cache repeat requests, retry transient failures with backoff, and checkpoint pagination or jobs so a restart does not duplicate work. Stop on repeated authorization or blocking responses rather than trying to evade them.
  7. Validate and monitor. Check required fields, types, duplicates, missing values, schema changes, latency, and failure rates. Store enough non-secret request metadata to reproduce a run.

Example: call an authorized JSON API and validate the response

This Python example calls GitHub’s public repository endpoint to illustrate the direct-API pattern. It is an example of using a site’s API, not a general permission to scrape GitHub or any other site. For another source, use that source’s documented, authorized endpoint and follow its own authentication, terms, pagination, and rate limits.

import requests

url = "https://api.github.com/repos/octocat/Hello-World"
response = requests.get(
    url,
    headers={"Accept": "application/vnd.github+json"},
    timeout=20,
)
response.raise_for_status()

if "application/json" not in response.headers.get("Content-Type", ""):
    raise ValueError("Expected a JSON response")

payload = response.json()
required = ("full_name", "html_url", "stargazers_count")
missing = [field for field in required if field not in payload]
if missing:
    raise ValueError(f"Response is missing fields: {missing}")

record = {
    "name": payload["full_name"],
    "url": payload["html_url"],
    "stars": payload["stargazers_count"],
}
print(record)

The important parts are not the example’s particular fields: check for HTTP errors before parsing, verify the returned content type, assert the fields your downstream code depends on, and normalize the response into a stable record. For endpoints that require credentials, add them using the documented server-side authentication method; do not copy a secret into a client-facing app.

When to use HTML or browser rendering instead

If no appropriate site API exists, an HTML-fetching service can retrieve markup for your parser. A managed provider may accept the target URL and return HTML, or offer structured parsing controls. If data appears only after scripts execute, select a JavaScript-rendering or browser-execution option and verify that the rendered response actually contains the needed fields. Do not assume a successful HTTP status means the page loaded correctly or the data is present.

For brittle pages, prefer a documented structured endpoint or predefined extractor over selectors tied to incidental markup. If you do parse HTML, isolate selectors in one place, validate extracted values, and alert on sudden missing-field or schema changes. If an endpoint returns encoded or nested data, confirm its format and decoding requirements rather than treating every response as ordinary JSON.

Retries, pagination, cost, and operational reliability

  • Retries: Retry only transient failures, with a bounded number of attempts and increasing delay. Do not endlessly retry authorization failures, explicit blocks, or malformed requests.
  • Pagination: Follow the source’s documented cursor, page, or continuation token. Save progress so a failed run can resume, and use idempotent writes to avoid duplicates.
  • Concurrency: Start low and increase only within the source’s stated limits. Excessive parallel requests can trigger limits or disrupt the target.
  • Caching: Cache where the data’s freshness requirements and the source’s rules allow it. Reusing valid results reduces repeated requests and processing.
  • Cost: Compare the full workflow rather than request price alone: rendered requests, proxy needs, retries, asynchronous job handling, storage, and maintenance can affect total cost. The cited vendor documentation does not establish independent performance, accuracy, or pricing benchmarks.
  • Observability: Record timestamps, endpoint or job identifiers, status, duration, and validation outcomes, while excluding secrets and unnecessary personal data.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • 401 or 403 response: Check that the endpoint is intended for your use and that credentials, scopes, and headers match its documentation. Do not attempt to bypass access controls.
  • 429 or repeated throttling: Reduce request rate and concurrency, honor any retry guidance, and use pagination or caching efficiently. If a limit is unclear, consult the provider or site owner.
  • Successful status but no expected data: Inspect content type and response body. The endpoint may return an error object, a different page, or an initial shell that needs JavaScript rendering.
  • Parser suddenly returns empty values: Compare a recent response with a known-good one, check for markup or schema drift, and update extraction only after confirming the changed structure.
  • Incomplete results: Inspect pagination metadata and asynchronous job status. A first page or job submission response may not contain the full dataset.
  • Timeouts or intermittent failures: Use reasonable timeouts, bounded retries with backoff, and resumable checkpoints. Repeated failures should trigger investigation rather than a larger retry storm.

Or skip the browser setup

If the task is to capture a clean visual screenshot of a page—not to extract structured records—ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is a screenshot tool, not a general-purpose data extraction API, so use it for visual capture rather than as a substitute for a data endpoint or scraper.

For example, the following cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe’s page. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is API scraping better than parsing HTML?

When an authorized, documented endpoint returns the fields you need, its structured response usually avoids selector maintenance. If no suitable endpoint exists, HTML parsing or browser rendering may be necessary.

Does robots.txt authorize scraping a site?

No. RFC 9309 says robots.txt rules are crawler guidance and are not access authorization. Check the site’s terms and authentication requirements separately.
