To save a rendered HTML document as a JPG, open DevTools, use the device toolbar’s screenshot command, and then check the downloaded format. If Chrome saves PNG, export that image as JPEG in an image editor. For automated captures, Chrome’s DevTools Protocol can request JPEG directly with a selectable quality level.
Decide what you need to save
An HTML document is a webpage, not an image file. Chrome first renders its HTML, CSS, fonts and scripts, then captures the rendered result. Choose the capture scope before choosing the export method:

Save a visible Chrome page or local HTML file
- Open the document. Load the website or open the local HTML file in Chrome. Wait until the text, images and other content you need are visible. A local file can be opened with Chrome’s normal Open File command or by dragging it into a tab.
- Open the device toolbar. Open DevTools, then choose More options > More tools > Device toolbar if the device controls are not already shown.
- Set the viewport if needed. Choose a device preset or adjust the viewport dimensions. The viewport determines the width and height of a normal screenshot.
- Open the screenshot menu. In the device toolbar, choose More options.
- Capture the required area. Select Capture screenshot for the visible viewport. Select Capture a full size screenshot to include page content outside the viewport.
- Inspect the downloaded file. Look at the file extension and your image viewer’s file information. DevTools documentation describes the two capture commands but does not guarantee the downloaded format on every Chrome version and platform.
If the file is PNG, the capture itself worked; it simply is not yet a JPEG. Open it in an image editor and choose Export, Save as or the equivalent command, then select JPEG or JPG. Keep the original PNG until you have checked the converted copy, because JPEG conversion is a separate step.
Choose JPEG settings when automating
The Chrome DevTools Protocol exposes screenshot controls that are more precise than the interactive menu. The Page.captureScreenshot command accepts jpeg, png and webp as formats. For a direct JPEG, send a request like this through an active DevTools Protocol session:

This is a protocol-level interface, not an additional one-click option in Chrome’s ordinary screenshot menu. Your automation must connect to a Chrome instance with a DevTools Protocol session, navigate to the document, wait for the state you need, issue the command, and write the returned image data to a file.
Use Chrome Headless when PNG is acceptable
Chrome Headless has a documented screenshot switch for command-line workflows. A typical invocation is:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1440,2000 https://example.comThe documented output is screenshot.png in the current working directory. --window-size sets the dimensions used for the capture. This command does not promise JPEG output, so convert the PNG afterward with an image editor or another local image-conversion tool if JPG is required.

Do not substitute Chrome printing for an image capture. --print-to-pdf creates a PDF, and Chrome’s regular print preview is likewise documented for printing or saving as PDF rather than exporting a JPEG.
Make the capture reliable
Wait for content that appears late
JavaScript applications, lazy-loaded images and remote fonts may not be ready when the first screenshot is taken. In the interactive workflow, wait until the page visibly settles before opening the screenshot menu. In protocol automation, make your own readiness condition part of the workflow before calling Page.captureScreenshot.
Capture the right page state
A screenshot records the rendered state, including the current scroll position, viewport size and any open overlays. Close menus, cookie notices and dialogs that should not appear. If a full-size capture still misses content, check whether the page only inserts that content after scrolling or interaction; a screenshot command cannot capture elements that have not been rendered.

Control dimensions before capture
For a normal screenshot, set the device-toolbar viewport to the target width and height first. For automated work, set the browser window or protocol viewport deliberately and record those dimensions with the output. A very narrow viewport can trigger a mobile layout, while a wide viewport can select a desktop layout with different navigation and wrapping.
Troubleshooting Chrome-to-JPEG captures
