To resume a live cloud-browser session, disconnect from it without closing the browser, save its session ID or reconnection endpoint, and reconnect before the provider’s keep-alive, disconnect timeout, or session TTL expires. If the original browser process has already ended, reconnect through a persistent profile or session API that restores cookies and localStorage. Always verify the URL, title, account, and application state before continuing automation.
What “resume” means
A cloud browser runs on a remote server while your code, desktop client, or agent connects to it. Resuming means attaching to that same running browser (or restoring its saved profile), not merely opening the website again in a new browser.
- Live reconnect: the browser process is still running, so its tabs, cookies, localStorage, and in-memory state can remain available.
- Profile restore: the original process has ended, but a provider saved a browser profile or session record that can be loaded into a new process.
- Fresh session: the keep-alive or TTL expired and no usable profile exists; you must start a new browser and authenticate again if necessary.
A website can still invalidate a login independently. Cookie expiry, an identity-provider logout, a security challenge, or an application timeout can force a sign-in even when the cloud browser itself resumed successfully.
The provider-neutral resume workflow
- Create or acquire a session. Record the provider’s session ID and WebSocket debugger URL, streaming endpoint, or other reconnection URL. Cloudflare’s HTTP API, for example, returns a
sessionIdand WebSocket debugger URL and accepts a requested keep-alive period. - Do the work without creating unnecessary browsers. Reuse the existing browser and open another tab for independent pages when that is sufficient. Cloudflare notes that tabs do not count as additional browser instances, although each tab consumes memory.
- Detach, do not terminate. Call the provider’s disconnect operation. In Cloudflare Browser Run, use
browser.disconnect()rather thanbrowser.close(); disconnecting leaves the browser available for a later connection, while closing ends the process. - Reconnect within the allowed window. Supply the saved session ID or endpoint to your client before the keep-alive, disconnect timeout, or TTL ends.
- Verify state before acting. Check the expected URL and page title, confirm the authenticated account, and read a small piece of application data. Treat a missing login or unexpected page as a recovery branch rather than proceeding with destructive actions.
The exact method name varies. Some services expose a WebSocket endpoint, others a Session API, and managed streaming products reconnect through a browser or desktop client. The lifecycle rule is the same: preserve the remote process, preserve its identifier, and reconnect before expiry.

Cloudflare Browser Run: disconnect and reconnect
Keep the process alive
Cloudflare’s documented pattern is to call browser.disconnect() when a request or worker is finished. Do not call browser.close() unless you intend to destroy the browser. Set a keep-alive value when creating the session and retain the returned session ID and debugger URL in durable storage.
Reconnect with the saved endpoint
On the next request, create a client connection from the stored WebSocket debugger URL (or use the provider’s reconnect helper), then perform the state checks described above. If the keep-alive or idle limit has elapsed, the endpoint may no longer work and a new browser must be created.
Reuse tabs carefully
Opening a new tab is usually cheaper and faster than starting another browser. Cloudflare’s guidance says lightweight pages may support “tens of tabs,” while heavy pages may allow only a few; this is operational guidance, not a universal limit. Monitor memory and close tabs you no longer need.
When the original process is gone
Persistent profiles and Session APIs
For work that must survive a process restart, choose a provider that stores a persistent profile or exposes a Session API. Browserless documents creating a long-lived session with a TTL, disconnecting, and reconnecting later while preserving browser state. CloudBrowser AI describes returning to an already authenticated site by saving cookies and localStorage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A restored profile is not a guarantee of access. The site may have expired the cookie, revoked the token, changed its device policy, or logged the account out. Verify authentication every time.
What normally persists
| State | What it can preserve | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Cookies | Login sessions, preferences, and server-issued identifiers | The website or identity provider can expire or revoke them. |
| LocalStorage and related profile data | Tokens, settings, and application state where the site uses browser storage | It is origin-specific and can be cleared or invalidated by the application. |
| Open tabs and URLs | The pages that were open in the same process, or tabs explicitly restored by the provider | A new ephemeral browser normally starts with no tabs. |
| Provider metadata | Session ID, TTL, reconnect endpoint, and profile reference | Metadata can expire even when a client still has an old endpoint. |
Timeouts and lifecycle rules
Idle timeout versus disconnect timeout
An idle timeout decides when an inactive user or connection is disconnected. A disconnect timeout determines how long the previous streaming instance remains available for reconnection. They are separate settings. A provider can disconnect your client quickly yet keep the browser alive for a longer reconnection window.

Explicitly ending a session
Do not assume that pressing an “end,” “stop,” or “sign out” control behaves like a network interruption. Amazon WorkSpaces Secure Browser states that a reconnect within its configured interval returns users to the previous streaming session after a disconnection or network interruption; after the interval, users receive a new streaming instance. It also states that explicitly ending a session terminates the instance, so the same reconnection behavior does not apply.
Design for expiry
Store the session metadata with a timestamp and refresh or extend the TTL when the provider supports it. On reconnect failure, create a new session, load the persistent profile if available, and run the authentication check. Never treat an expired endpoint as proof that the account itself is unavailable.

Choosing reuse, an isolated context, or a new browser
Reuse the existing browser
- Use it for warm authenticated state, lower startup latency, and workflows that naturally span several requests.
- Open another tab when pages can share the same profile.
- Watch memory: complex pages, videos, and large applications can make a shared browser unstable.
Use an incognito or isolated browser context
Use a separate context when tasks must not share cookies, localStorage, or cache. Cloudflare describes incognito contexts as isolated from the default context and from one another while remaining in the same browser process. This is useful for testing multiple accounts or preventing one job from changing another job’s login.
Start a separate browser process
Choose a new process when you need process-level isolation, a different browser configuration, a clean recovery from a crash, or a workload whose memory use would endanger other tabs. The trade-off is cold-start time and another browser-instance slot.
Store and protect reconnection credentials
- Save the session ID, endpoint, creation time, expiry or TTL, and profile identifier in durable server-side storage.
- Keep WebSocket URLs and access tokens out of browser JavaScript, logs, tickets, and source control.
- Associate each session with a job or tenant so one worker cannot attach to another customer’s browser.
- Apply a cleanup policy for abandoned sessions and stale metadata.
- Record whether the last detach was a safe disconnect or an intentional close; recovery logic differs.
Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
Warm versus cold startup
Reusing a live session avoids browser startup and login work. It is usually the fastest path, but it consumes a running browser and its memory. A persistent profile costs a restore step but gives you a recovery path after the original process ends. A fresh browser is the cleanest isolation boundary and the simplest way to recover from corruption.
Tabs and concurrency
Tabs are efficient for related pages, but they are not free. Heavy pages consume more memory and can crash the browser when too many are open. Separate processes provide stronger fault isolation but may count toward provider concurrency limits. Measure your own page mix rather than adopting a universal tab number.

Failure-safe automation
Make reconnect operations idempotent: first attempt to attach to the recorded session, then verify state, and only create a replacement after determining that the old session is unavailable. Take care with queued jobs so two workers do not simultaneously control one tab. If a job can resume after a crash, checkpoint the last completed action outside the browser.
Troubleshooting common resume failures
The endpoint says the session is not found
Cause: the browser was closed, the TTL expired, or the provider removed an idle session. Fix: inspect the recorded expiry, create a new session, and load the persistent profile or Session API state if one exists.
Reconnect succeeds but the site shows a login page
Cause: an expired or revoked cookie, an identity-provider policy, or a different context/profile. Fix: confirm that you reattached to the intended profile, inspect cookie expiry, authenticate again, and save the profile only after the login completes.
The browser resumes with the wrong tab or URL
Cause: tab restoration is not guaranteed, or another worker changed the shared browser. Fix: enumerate tabs, match by URL or title, and create a new tab when no match exists. Use a dedicated context or process for jobs that cannot tolerate cross-task navigation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The browser disconnects again immediately
Cause: an idle limit, provider capacity limit, crashed page, or network interruption. Fix: check provider lifecycle settings and logs, reduce heavy tabs, add bounded reconnect retries, and capture a diagnostic page state before replacing the session.
Explicit close was called accidentally
Cause: cleanup code used the browser-close operation instead of the client-disconnect operation. Fix: create a replacement session and restore the saved profile; a terminated process cannot be reattached.

FAQ
Can I resume after closing my laptop?
Usually yes, if the remote browser process remains alive and its reconnect window has not expired. Your laptop’s network disconnect is different from closing the remote browser.
Does resuming guarantee the same login?
No. It preserves browser state only while the provider and website still accept that state. Cookie expiry, revocation, or a site-side logout can require authentication again.
Should every job get its own browser?
No. Reuse a browser for compatible work, use isolated contexts for cookie separation, and reserve separate processes for strong isolation or recovery.
