You cannot replace Flutter’s Dart debugPrint with a Kotlin logger at the same call site: they run in different languages. Keep or change logging in Dart using Dart APIs; use Android or Kotlin logging only in native Kotlin code, such as a host app or plugin. First locate the call you intend to change.

First identify whether the call is Dart or Kotlin

A Flutter app can contain both Dart code and native Android Kotlin code, but the logging APIs are not interchangeable across that boundary. Flutter’s debugPrint is a Dart framework callback property, and its default implementation is debugPrintThrottled. A Kotlin logging API belongs in Kotlin source; it cannot be invoked from a Dart widget or service. See the Flutter debugPrint API and DebugPrintCallback documentation.

  • If the call appears in a .dart file, choose a Dart-side option below.
  • If it appears in an Android .kt file, use Android’s logging API or a Kotlin logging facade there.

If the call is in Dart, keep or replace it with a Dart logger

Keep debugPrint when its Flutter behavior is useful

Flutter’s default implementation attempts to throttle output to help avoid data loss on rate-limited platforms such as Android. Replacing it with a different logger may change how much output is emitted and its ordering or delivery characteristics; do not assume another API behaves the same way.

Also account for release builds: Flutter documents that debugPrint can log to the console even in release mode. For messages intended only during development, guard the call with kDebugMode or use an assert, as appropriate for the app’s policy. For example:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import 'package:flutter/foundation.dart';

if (kDebugMode) {
  debugPrint('Loaded account settings');
}

This is a debug-mode pattern, not a reason to include sensitive account details in a log message.

Use dart:developer log() for categorized Dart logging

Flutter documents dart:developer’s log() as a Dart-side alternative when you need more logging granularity and a category name. It remains Dart logging—not Kotlin logging. Check how its console and DevTools output fit your workflow before changing call sites. The log() API documentation describes its parameters and behavior.

If the call is in Kotlin, choose an Android or Kotlin API

Use Android’s built-in Log API

Native Android Kotlin code can call android.util.Log with a tag, message, and, where relevant, a throwable. A schematic example is:

private const val TAG = "AccountRepository"

Log.d(TAG, "Loaded account settings")
Log.e(TAG, "Could not load account settings", exception)

Confirm the imports, tag conventions, level policy, and project SDK configuration. Android describes tags as identifiers for a message’s source and documents an optional throwable, along with isLoggable and level controls. See Android’s Log API reference.

Use kotlin-logging only with a compatible runtime backend

kotlin-logging is a Kotlin-style facade over SLF4J, not a complete logging destination by itself. A project using it needs the appropriate facade artifact and a compatible runtime SLF4J implementation, with that backend configured for output and levels. The API supports lazy message lambdas, but exact dependency coordinates and versions depend on the project’s Kotlin, Android, and SLF4J compatibility. Consult the kotlin-logging project and verify dependency choices against the build rather than copying a universal Gradle recipe.

Check target requirements for other libraries

Klogging is another pure-Kotlin option, but its project README states Android SDK 24 or higher. That makes the app’s minimum SDK a concrete compatibility check; also review its feature and backend model before adopting it. See the Klogging project README.

Preserve the behaviors that matter when migrating

  • Release visibility: Decide whether messages should appear in release builds. Because debugPrint can emit in release mode, retain an explicit debug guard if that matches your intended policy.
  • Throttling: Decide whether Flutter’s default throttling behavior matters to the Dart call. Direct calls to another logger do not establish equivalent throttling.
  • Severity and exceptions: Map message severity deliberately. Android’s Log offers level-specific methods and a throwable argument; with a facade, use its supported exception or cause form and verify the backend.
  • Destination and filtering: Set output and level filtering intentionally. Android documents isLoggable and level controls, while kotlin-logging delegates implementation and configuration to its backend.
  • Data safety: Keep secrets and unnecessary user-specific values out of diagnostic messages.

Compare options within the correct language boundary

Where the call runs Candidate What to compare
Dart / Flutter Keep debugPrint or use dart:developer log() Flutter throttling, release-mode gating, categories, and DevTools visibility. See the Flutter API and log() API.
Native Kotlin on Android android.util.Log or a facade such as kotlin-logging Tags and throwable handling, dependency and backend configuration, level filtering, and whether the code must also target multiplatform environments. See Android’s API reference and the kotlin-logging project.

The appropriate Kotlin dependency cannot be determined from the title alone. Check the project’s Kotlin/JVM or multiplatform targets, Android minimum SDK, existing logging backend, and build configuration before selecting a library and version.
